Blowing in the Wind

I mentioned a couple of days ago that I had gone out on Sunday to capture images of a rapidly disappearing fall foliage around town. My first stop was Marblehead High School where I had last noted some early color a week prior. I arrived just before 5pm as the sun was illuminating the few trees displaying nice color. As an added bonus the grass in the foreground was lit by sun and blowing in the wind that would pick up periodically. Fall in Marblehead Harbor

On Saturday, I was out hoping to capture scenes of foliage with a lens I had rented for the week. This was as much an exercise for the lens as it was a hope to capture the fewer boats remaining in Marblehead Harbor with spots of foliage as backdrop. Unfortunately, I found more boats than foliage and had to console myself with this shot saved by some interesting clouds overhead and decent lighting. Leaves Turn at Memorial Park

On Sunday night, I headed out in search of foliage having realized that the recent cold snaps had made short work of this year's leaf peeping season in Marblehead. I hit a few spots before turning onto Pleasant Street and noticing the way the setting sun was illuminating the top of the maple tree at Memorial Park. I quickly pulled over, ran out of the car with camera in hand, and captured a few frames before the sun dropped and the light disappeared.

A Gnome in Marblehead

On Wednesday, I visited Waterside Cemetery to capture a tree displaying peak foliage. As I explored various angles and compositions, I happened upon a gnome in Marblehead. The little statue was standing among fallen leaves and seemed to have been there for years as he had developed a large vertical crack at one point. I was so enamored with this Marblehead gnome that I shot him twice that day and with different lenses. Waterside Foliage

It's been a while since I actually went out on a Wednesday in Marblehead to capture images around town. The name of the site got its name from my day off of my 'real' job but I tended to shoot whenever the light was good and it worked out between the home and work schedule. Yesterday, I dropped the kids off at their respective schools and headed out to Waterside Cemetery where I had scouted a tree nearing peak foliage a few days previously. Autumn Begins

I went out yesterdays hoping to capture a bit of fall foliage as I had seen the maples in town starting to turn a few weeks ago. I hadn't been to Rockett Landing off Village street in a while and was pleased to see the floats still in place. I was even happier to spot some color across Salem Harbor. I composed this image of fall color seen across Salem Harbor with boats still moored in the waters as autumn begins to take shape in Marblehead.

Little Drummer Boy

On Saturday, I drove around town looking for some early sign of fall and found a couple of trees that started to display their fall foliage at Marblehead High School. I decided to compose a shot of the little drummer boy sculpture with the foliage serving as backdrop and couldn't have asked for better light with the bright blue sky. The angle of the sun shone brightly on the drummer boy's face while adding a bit of shadow under his hat.

Changing Colors at Seaside Park

As I picked up my kids from school yesterday, I stared at this maple tree at Seaside Park wondering if it might reach the peak colors that I've captured in years past. Whether it was the dry summer or other reasons, this particular maple doesn't look as vibrant as I recall from past visits and went into my 'to be published' folder to find this shot from October 4, 2014 for comparison. Peak Color at Ware Pond

On Saturday afternoon, I took advantage of relatively calm conditions to fly over Ware pond in hopes of capturing some fall foliage. Marblehead was between storms and I knew that the coming one with 50-70MPH gusts would destroy what little foliage was to be found around town. As luck would have it, the trees surround the water were displaying peak color (though more than a few bare branches could be seen as well). For a lackluster year of foliage hunting, this was about as nice of a scene as I could have hoped for.

Spotting Foliage on the Neck

I mentioned yesterday that I had gone out for a second time on Sunday in the hopes of spotting foliage from above and flew my drone from Riverhead Beach. I spotted a tree sporting bright orange leaves almost immediately and headed across to Marblehead Neck for a closer look. I explored the tree you can see near the water between piers from various angles and heights.
