Top 10 of 2021 – #3 – Best Laid Plans

Sometimes a photo makes the top 10 more for the memory of the outing than the quality of light. Such was the case on November 19th when I drove straight from work to Chandler Hovey Park in the hopes of shooting a moonrise and walked back to the car freezing and without a single shot of the moon that stayed hidden behind clouds. Morning Light – part 1

And this is how the morning light began on a Wednesday in mid-December... I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had missed the sunrise on Monday and Tuesday of this week so made a point of heading out on Wednesday just in case. Dawn Breaks over Gerry Island

And this is the final image from last Wednesday's dawn shoot in Little Harbor. I took a short break from capturing the First Harbor Christmas tree boat to take in the dawn breaking over Gerry Island. Marblehead Light's green beacon adds a nice contrast to the deep red light of dawn on this early December morning.

Best Laid Plans

I was excited for the possibility of shooting the moonrise tonight at Chandler Hovey Park having received an invite to join a group of photographers there. I knew it would be tight with finishing up work in my Danvers office at 4pm but had arrived just in the nick of time at 4:28 (moonrise was at 4:31) only to find the cloud cover which should have been disappointing was showing no signs of doing so. Sleep til Dawn

I miss being able to roll out of bed at 6:00 in the morning and still have time to capture scenes like this of dawn breaking over Marblehead Harbor... Captured in mid-October before the dreaded end of Daylight Savings Time and the onset of horribly early sunrises and sunsets; the latter of which I tend to stare at from my office window these days.

We Fly at Dawn

I love capturing a lone bird in a sunrise or sunset shot as it adds a bit of life and movement to a scene but on October 10th, I got far more than I expected as a flock of birds formed a line circling Marblehead Light as I captured a muted sunrise from along Front Street.

Tuckers Wharf Dawn

I was looking for an image to share and happened upon this one captured as the sun appeared over Marblehead Neck just after dawn on October 3rd. I was standing at Tuckers Wharf to try to maximize the number of boats seen in the harbor. I lucked out with the light on this morning as it transitioned from a yellow-orange dawn to a pink sunrise. I love these late sunrises in the fall solely for the opportunity to get out and capture them at a reasonable hour.

Unexpected Sunset

“The best things in life are unexpected because there were no expectations.” ? Dawn’s Early Light

On Sunday morning, I awoke just after 5am and decided to make the most of that with a photo outing at the State Street Landing. I had checked sunrise location and times and thought I read that the sun would cross the horizon at 6:20am. Given that, I drove out early and arrived at State Street to find a slowly developing yellow-orange glow of dawn's early light. Storm’s A Coming

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Crocker Park on that Wednesday at dawn hoping for a bit of red sky that might precede the coming storm. In the wide view I shared, the hints of red could only be seen close to the horizon.
