Washington Street

Master of the Hannah

There are numerous signs on Marblehead homes depicting its former occupants but this one stands out for me.  I always liked the old wood sign juxtaposed against the brick wall and, when I saw the flowers on the vine in early October, I knew it was time to shoot it.  The hardest part was finding the right time of day when the shadows served to frame the scene.

Keep it Local – Shipshape

It's Friday so it is time to showcase another local business.  Today it's Shipshape's turn.  This is a wonderful store on Washington Street specializing in nautical items and carrying local artisans work.  Visit their website to see a small sample of what's available or, better yet, walk down Washington Street and see for yourself.

A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride Through Town

The Fall Festival took place this weekend and we headed to old town to take part in the festivities.  There were sidewalk sales, kids activities and a horse-drawn carriage ride down Washington Street.  We stood in line and were fortunate to be in the front of the carriage where I kept busy shooting frame after frame of this incredible scene.  It's not hard to imagine similar horse-drawn carriages traversing Washington Street hundreds of years ago and passing these same sites.  I liked this view of Old Town House best of the series.

Keep it Local – Flores Mantilla

This is the first entry in a series that will focus on Marblehead businesses.  I visited the Flores Mantilla flower shop (link to website) on May 8th to pick up an arrangement for my wife in honor of Mother's day.  Though I had passed the shop many times, this was my first opportunity to marvel at the outdoor and indoor display of flowers.  After purchasing the bouquet, I asked Nancy if she would mind my photographing her shop for this site.  On a recent Wednesday morning, I had the chance to do so and was rewarded with some nice light. Spring Comes to Marblehead

Having lived in DC for some time, Spring and cherry blossoms will forever go hand-in-hand.  It was with that in mind that I sought cherry blossoms throughout Marblehead over the past week.  I was fortunate to find the tree above at peak bloom while walking down Washington Street on a foggy day. Below are shots taken under better conditions featuring more cherry blossoms with Abbot Hall and the Lee Mansion as backdrops.

Before These Crowded Streets – Old Town House

Only one week left until the overnight parking ban is lifted and the parked cars return.  I'm convinced a photographer came up with the ban that extends from the end-of-Fall until early-Spring!  It's a wonder to walk these streets in the early morning hours and explore them before the town stirs.  On this morning, I walked the length of Washington street to the Old North Church and wandered up and down State and Pleasant streets.  Here are the first two images of Old Town House from that walk.  The morning light was absolutely perfect on this particular day and turned [...]

Early Morning on Washington Street

Today's post features two images from Washington Street taken in the early morning hours.  Above are the wonderful shops that line this crowded street before any parked cars could disturb this tranquil scene.  Below is the view of Pleasant Street and one of my (and my son's) favorite buildings that houses Mud Puddle toys.  Exploring Old Town in these early hours provides a very peaceful and calm feeling - I highly recommend the experience if you're willing to brave the cold and give up the extra hour of sleep....
