Frozen Steps at Fort Beach

Shortly after capturing the image from Lovis Cove, I wandered down to Fort Beach searching for more unique images as a result of the blizzard of 2015.  The most intriguing item was the frozen sea spray that coated the fence along Front Street as well as the handles along the stairs leading to the beach below. Unfortunately, there were cars parked along Front Street making compositions more difficult.  I decided on this one showcasing the nearby frozen steps with Fort Beach in the foreground and Fort Sewall seen in the distance.

The Beach at Castle Rock

Continuing with the 25 minute exploration of Castle Rock from January 7, this view comes immediately after capturing the Old Man in Castle Rock.  At this point, I had descended the stairs leading down towards the small beach at Castle Rock and explored a few compositions that would properly capture the area. I decided on a wide view to show the beach (made up of small to medium sized polished rocks) as well as the houses lining the coastline of Marblehead Neck and the calm Atlantic Ocean reflecting the clouds above and the colors of sunset.  The beach at Castle [...]

Lone Dog on Devereux Beach

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with a lone dog on Devereux Beach.  I captured this on November 23rd when I had headed to the top of the causeway to photograph the sunset as it took shape over Devereux Beach. I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the warmish weather and I managed to capture this dog in my frame before his owners were able to catch up to him giving the impression of a lone dog on the beach at sunset.

Golden Light on Devereux Beach

Back to Saturday night's outing with my son for this image of golden light on Devereux Beach.  This was the sight that awaited me as we pulled into the nearly empty lot at Devereux Beach on December 13.  I quickly headed down to the water's edge where I set up this composition and shot as wave after wave came to shore. At this point the sun had just dipped behind the distant houses and the clouds above took on a golden glow that reflected on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Setting Sun over Devereux Beach

On Wednesday, November 12, Spring-like weather replaced the freezing cold with temperatures hitting the high-50s.  I decided to head down to Devereux Beach at sunset and see if the conditions might make for a nice sunset. Before the sun set (an image I posted shortly after I captured it), I was treated to this view of a large sun whose light was diffused by haze.  I set the exposure and aperture such that the sun would become a large and bright ball in the evening sky and timed this image to capture the soft waves coming to shore.

November Sunset Reflecting on Devereux Beach

It had been ten days since I had last headed out for a photo shoot in Marblehead when the opportunity came for an outing at sunset on Wednesday, November 12. Fog had enveloped Marblehead for much of the day and finally broke around 3 pm.  I headed down to Devereux beach hoping that sunset's colors would reflect off the remaining fog.  That plan didn't quite work out but I was treated to a nice sunset instead. I tried to time this image to capture the November sunset reflecting off the wet sand at Devereux Beach in this moment between waves.

Running to Shore at Devereux Beach

Back to Tuesday, September 9th for this image to finish off the week.  I had gone out to shoot the sunset during an astronomically low tide in early September.  Before the sky exploded in color, I had spotted a few kids running in and out of the water on what was a very warm evening. I captured this frame as the boy was in mid-stride running to shore at Devereux Beach.  Felt like a good image to share as the days get shorter and colder. Enjoy the weekend!

Waves and Mist at Preston Beach

On Saturday, September 27, Marblehead was treated to a warm up that made it feel like Summer again.  I went down to Phillips Beach in Swampscott with my wife and kids and decided to walk over to Preston Beach in Marblehead along the water as the tide began to roll out. As I looked back, I noticed the low lying mist that seemed to be coming from water evaporating from the warm sand.  The mist combined with the high tide made for an interesting scene and I bent low to capture it as a wave rolled to shore.

Low Tide in Marblehead – Smooth Sand at Devereux Beach

The series of six images captured during an incredibly low tide in Marblehead comes to a close with this final shot.  I was in awe of the smooth sand at Devereux Beach that resulted from the astronomically low tide (-1.5 feet). After capturing the pink sky in the other direction, I turned toward the setting sun and the beautiful light that still glowed strong in the early evening.  With the rocks in the foreground, the smooth ocean water and scattered clouds reflecting the sun's last light, I couldn't ask for much more for this week's finale. I have a few [...]

Low Tide in Marblehead – Pink Sky over Devereux Beach

The sky was erupting in pink at this point so, as soon as I finished capturing yesterday's image (had to wait for a break in traffic), I turned my attention back to Devereux Beach.  The smooth sand and water were doing wonders at reflecting the pink sky over Devereux Beach and I found this composition perfectly captured the feel of awe and wonder I felt standing on the causeway. I bet most 'Headers would be hard pressed to identify this sandy beach as Devereux (though the houses along the Neck in the distance give it away). It's so refreshing to [...]
