Marblehead Harbor

September on the Water

Another look at September from the To Be Posted folder - this time September 2nd, 2019. The only problem with revisiting these 'keepers' that never saw the light of day after so many years is forgetting the details of what drove me out to shoot at 7:30 at night. Looking at this image, I have to believe we had experienced a passing storm and I had hoped for a break in the clouds to create a rainbow facing towards Marblehead Light. Instead, I made do with the scene before me which was very calming with its soft blue light.

Summer Days on the Harbor

Another image from my chase of cumulus clouds on a 99 degree summer day on the harbor. I had left Castle Rock and headed to Chandler Hovey before circulating back down to Foster Street. From here I knew I could capture a number of compositions looking across the harbor toward Abbot Hall but also towards the mouth of the harbor. When I spotted the launch for the Eastern Yacht Club idling, I knew I would start with this shot angling to get the Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Light in the background.  The otherwise full harbor and great clouds overhead [...]

Starting to Set

A nice comparison to Tuesday's image is this one captured from the Boston Yacht Club on July 14th as the sun was starting to set over Marblehead Harbor. As opposed to Tuesday's tight crop at 224mm causing the boats to appear stacked, this one taken at a very wide 28mm sets them further apart. The light in the sky was just starting to form at this point and would become far stronger as the night progressed but there was something about this image and the way the light reflected on the water below that made it a keeper in my [...]

Stacked Boats and Marblehead Light

On June 13th, I headed to Crocker Park for the moonrise but arrived a bit early. The sky was clear which was perfect for capturing the moon close to the horizon but meant little in the way of interest for a bonus sunset shot. However, as the sun began to set, it cast a nice soft light on the stacked boats in the harbor and I found this simple composition with Marblehead Light centered in the top of the frame. I'm not sure what it is about this shot but I ended up liking much more than I expected.  Hope [...]

Ready to Launch

So 12 minutes after Monday's image of that golden sunset light, the sky had transformed into a pastel pink hue that was strongest in the opposite direction. I was standing on the float at the end of the Pleon Yacht Club from where I had a perfect angle on these two launch boats belonging to the Eastern. The boats were awaiting some members who were just out of the frame at this point and seemingly headed out to their boat to enjoy the light and warm temperatures on this summer evening.

Grey Clouds over Marblehead

On May 15th, I had headed out a bit too early to catch the moonrise and so I made a quick detour onto the Neck. The light held some promise but, as I turned onto Harbor Avenue and took another look to my left, I spotted some grey clouds that threatened to blot out the sunset. I ended up at Foster Street and walked down to the Pleon pier for this view just as the sun was fully blocked by the cloud cover. I had to underexpose the scene to battle the light escaping from behind the cloud and was [...]

Empty Harbor Dawn

Another image from my outing on the morning of April 16th and lucking out with some great dawn colors. I had shared a tighter shot focusing on Marblehead Light and Childrens Island but thought I would share this one today. I had zoomed out to include the stacked lobster traps as well as the American flag at the State Street Landing. The empty harbor filled with moorings seems to be awaiting the arrival of warmer days and boats to fill their spots. I imagine the next few days will see a lot of activity in Marblehead harbor as 70 degree [...]

Ready to Launch

It's amazing how many compositions can be captured from the end of the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club. I shared one looking across the harbor towards Abbot Hall and the BYC last week. As I turned, I spotted this view of the launch for Eastern Yacht Club. As the wind picked up, the flags flew and picked up the light of the sun breaking through the clouds. In the distance you can see Marblehead Light peeking out from behind the Corinthian. I'm sure the harbor will be seeing lots of boats entering in the next few weeks and these [...]

Spring is in the Air – Old North Church

Last shot from my outing on Sunday, April 15 when lasers and tech dinghies crossed Marblehead Harbor. I was set up at Parker Lane and zoomed in a bit as the clouds shifted so that the sun reflected off the white sails of these lasers while Old North Church and the houses behind The Landing fell into shadow. Hope this week got you excited for springtime in Marblehead!
