Spring is in the Air – Marblehead Light

I mentioned that I had gone out on Sunday, April 10th to capture tech dinghies in the harbor and started off at Hammond Park. This was the scene that awaited me there. I played with tight and wide compositions of this scene but had to go with the wider version as it allowed me to include the great cumulus clouds over Marblehead Light. The sun was behind me and helped bring out the small white sails against the blue water of the harbor.

Spring is in the Air – Grace, St Michaels and Crocker Park

Continuing with images from the last tech dinghy race of the season which took place on Sunday, April 10th. Here a group (gaggle?) of dinghies mixes with lasers crossing in front of St. Michaels, Grace Community Church and Crocker Park as the sun reflects off the white sails.

Spring is in the Air – Abbot Hall

I was home on Sunday, April 10th having finished some yard work when I noted some nice cumulus clouds overhead and pulled up the Boston Yacht Club webcam to see how they appeared over the harbor. I was surprised to find more than a dozen sailboats crossing the harbor and quickly made my way to Hammond Park where I captured the tech dinghies in front of Marblehead Light. Once the light shifted, I drove across the causeway and found this vantage point from Parker Lane. It definitely felt as if spring was in the air with temperatures in the mid-50s [...]

Hint of Smoke at Cormorant Rock

On January 11, Marblehead was predicted to see temperatures in the single digits and so I made sure to head to Front Street in the hopes of capturing some sea smoke. While temperature is a key factor in seeing mist rising from the relatively warm ocean water, wind is another key element. On this morning, the wind was strong which greatly diminished the presence of smoke. I found the highest amounts around Cormorant Rock and waited until the sun rose above the cloud/fog bank to light up the smoke. With the green channel marker bobbing in the water, I timed [...]

Snow-Capped Sunset

Less than 30 minutes after capturing the view of a frozen Redd's Pond, I had made my way to Tuckers Wharf to shoot the sunset. I had a particular shot in mind - that of Marblehead Light decked out in rope lights for the holiday season. While waiting, a pink sunset formed over the harbor and I moved to position these snow-capped moorings in just the right part of the frame to break up the otherwise monotonous (in a great way) pink water. Marblehead Light can be seen with its green beacon shining bright and the first hint of light [...]

Anticrepuscular Sunset

On October 20th, I headed out to capture the moonset and was disappointed by the small band of low lying clouds that obstructed my view. Less than 30 minutes later when I actually would have loved to have clouds reflecting the light of the rising sun, they were nowhere to be found. Instead I lucked out when I spotted these thin anticrepuscular rays behind Crocker Park. With the light hitting Abbot hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church, the rays added just enough interest to the otherwise empty sky on this fall morning in Marblehead.

Heading Home in a Townie

One of my all time favorite outings happened on July 5, 2016 and I still have not finished sharing my 'keepers' from that night. We had incredible fog roll in as the sun set which created an almost cinematic appearance to the harbor. I shot from Chandler Hovey Park in every direction and have shared several favorite images already. Here a lone town class boat heads back into the harbor with the sail catching the light of the setting sun and the fog breaking around the edge of land in the background.

Best Harbor in America

As I was looking for images to post this week, I stopped at this shot and thought 'this must be the best harbor in America'. And then I promptly Googled to see if that was a real contest. Turns out it is as of 2019 when US Harbors started a contest and, to my dismay, Marblehead wasn't even listed. The winner of the Northeast section was Padanaram, South Darmouth. Interestingly, only 2,500 people voted for the 2021 version of the contest so I figured when the time comes next year (voting should start in late March/early April 2022), we should [...]

Breaking through the Clouds

It's almost funny looking back at this image captured on the fourth of July and realizing we have spent much of the second wettest month on record in similar conditions. On that day, I had gone out just after noon and ended up capturing what I thought was an interesting low bank of clouds from the Pleon.  Abbot Hall seems to be breaking through the clouds with a nearly full harbor laid out in front.

Lucky, Bella and Ruddy Duck

I haven't shared a black and white image in quite some time and Friday night's foggy evening seemed perfectly suited for that treatment. From my spot at Crocker Park, I had a few compositions open to me but this one pointing across the harbor offered the best view of the Neck enveloped in fog. This is a slightly tighter composition than yesterday's shot and the fog has shifted higher to reveal the houses along the Neck. I got lazy and chose the title based on the three boats clearly visible - Lucky, Bella and Ruddy Duck
