Night of the Eclipse

With a solar eclipse set to take place today (and with me having to work), I figured I could share an image of the lunar eclipse from September 2015.  I had gone out on that night in the hopes of capturing the view of the Earth crossing between the sun and the moon thereby transforming the moon's color.  As it happened, I captured a great image with the red moon abutting Abbot Hall but that one only came after driving all around town. My first stop that night was Chandler Hovey Park and I found an angle at which the [...]

Moonrise over Old Town House

I didn't think I had much of a chance for shooting the moon tonight, let alone finally capturing a moonrise over Old Town House.  I had gone out to capture Marblehead harbor using my drone and had decided to launch from Crocker Park for its unobstructed views and central location.  I ended up flying for 35 minutes and got some nice shots before heading back to my car.  I had spotted the full Sturgeon moon rising over the harbor but it had come up forty minutes before sunset and so had not projected much light by the time I had [...]

Moonstruck at Chandler Hovey Park

I shared one image of the full Strawberry moon rising on June 9th as it cleared the slight haze at the horizon and shone low in the night sky.  As the moon rose, I followed its trajectory until the lighthouse became moonstruck with the full moon perfectly backlighting the green beacon at the top of the structure. The light of the full moon had just started to cast a glow in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor and created a very different scene from that taken only 7 minutes previously.  The earlier image is below to compare the two side [...]

By the Light of the Moon

Tonight the full Strawberry minimoon rose over Chandler Hovey Park and I was ready to capture the year's smallest moon from across the harbor at Fort Sewall.  I had set up with my camera on a tripod and brought along the drone wondering how a different perspective might work in shooting the moon.  When the moon rose, I learned quickly that the drone's camera was simply too small (in regards to focal length) to do this 'minimoon' justice and concentrated on getting this shot with the real camera. I decided to compose the final image to include the working boat [...]

Moonrise Symmetry

The full moon rose last night and I had convinced myself that clouds would block any view of it only to catch a glimpse of it rising on the First Harbor webcam and lamenting my decision to bag it.  Thankfully, I still have over 700 images in my 'to be posted' folder that have yet to see the light of day and discovered this image of perfect moonrise symmetry. On July 31, 2015, I had gone out on a perfect Summer evening with hardly a cloud in the sky and was fortunate to capture several images of a beautiful moonrise [...]

Between the Moon and Marblehead Light

A full moon is rising tonight on the first night of Passover and, knowing that I won't have a chance to shoot it, I thought I would share this image of the moonrise from mid-November.  I've shared two other images of this full moon before but today's image was the first one I captured that night and, while the moon hadn't quite hit its peak glow, I really liked the softer look of it as it broke through the haze on this night. One of my favorite aspects of shooting the moon from this spot near Crocker Park was being able [...]

Full Worm Moon over Flying Point

I can't describe how cold it was tonight while waiting for the full moon to rise over Flying Point.  With the clear night sky, I decided to drive over to Greystone beach having scouted out the projected rise of the full worm moon.  I had initially considered shooting the moonrise over Children's Island but decided in the end to try to capture it over the tip of Marblehead Neck instead. I set up about 10 minutes early with a borrowed 600mm lens and waited...and waited.  The cold air seemed to blow right through all layers of clothing and my hands [...]

Moon and Star over Marblehead

On Wednesday morning, I left the house at dawn with two goals in mind - capturing the setting full moon over Marblehead and a few images using my new Phantom drone.  I started by crossing the causeway and saw the beautiful full moon in my rear view mirror.  I had charted out its descent the night before but, when faced with the moon that morning, I found myself struggling with the right shooting spot.  I ended up driving down Foster Street, up Harbor Avenue, down Corinthian Lane, back up Nahant Street, down Ocean Avenue and finally deciding on Harvard Street. [...]

Light Up the Moon

Last night, I headed out of Marblehead in the hopes of capturing the full cold moon rising behind Nubble Light which had been decorated for the season in holiday lights.  It felt good to venture outside of Marblehead for a photoshoot - something I hadn't done in quite some time.  And even better to meet up with Phil Cohen who served as the inspiration for Wednesdays in Marblehead with his The Daily Portsmouth. As luck would have it, thick clouds moved in a bit earlier than expected and spoiled the photoshoot.  I was still able to catch up with Phil but [...]

The Setting Moon and Abbot Hall

After capturing the supermoon rising against the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey Park, I returned home to check the weather forecast for the next morning with the hope of capturing the setting moon as well.  I lucked out with clear conditions forecast for dawn but was concerned with the timing of moonset approximately 30 minutes before sunrise.  With so little light in the morning sky, the relatively bright moon threatened to overwhelm any scene I chose. I woke in the predawn hours and drove across the causeway to Foster Street where I found two other photographers ready to shoot the moon. [...]
