Full Worm Moon over Tinkers Island

That was a surprisingly nice moonrise. I had little hope for seeing let alone capturing the full worm moon tonight given the cloud cover and timing of the moonrise (5:17pm). I left my Danvers office at 5:00pm and drove straight to Surf Street where I had mapped out the moon rise to take place over Tinkers Island. As luck would have it, I hit every green light and arrived at my location at 5:29pm just as the full moon was rising above the cloud cover. I had enough time to setup my camera with its longest lens on the tripod [...]

Super Blue Blood Moon setting over Marblehead

I couldn't pass up shooting a 'super blue blood moon' especially when conditions were perfect with forecast for clear skies this morning. The name comes from a unique combination of the moon's proximity to Earth (super), the second full moon in a month (blue) and a partial lunar eclipse (blood). I had scouted out locations last night based on the projected moon set and settled on an area between the Eastern Yacht Club and Corinthian Lane.  As I crossed the causeway onto the Neck, I spotted the bright moon low in the evening sky and followed it as I drove [...]

New Years Supermoon

I have been looking forward to the New Years Supermoon for two weeks now and kept hoping the predictions for clear skies would hold.  I had everything I needed to capture the first moonrise of 2018 - new camera and a longer lens - that could offer me reach I never had before and the dynamic range to balance the brightness of the moon against Marblehead Light. As it happened, the perfect vantage point for the moonrise fell right in the backyard of my Wednesdays in Marblehead book designer. I sent her an email a few days back to see [...]

Cloudy with a Chance of Moonrise

For the second night in a row, I headed out hoping to capture the full moon.  Last night offered the better timing of the nearly full moon but, as luck would have it, dense clouds spoiled any view of the moon.  I returned to the same spot tonight and set up with two cameras as I test out the Sony a7rII eyeing a possible switch from the Canon system I have been using for the past 12 years. I set up both cameras with the longest lenses I had and composed this image only to then sit and wait and [...]

Harvest Moon under the Tree at Fort Sewall

In the past week, my wife and both kids have celebrated birthday - needless to say, I haven't had a chance to shoot lately and especially not the recent full moon.  Thankfully, I captured several images of the Harvest moon that rose on October 4th and haven't had a chance to share them yet. I had decided to capture the Harvest Moon from along Front Street.  I started off at Lovis Cove and then walked along Front Street toward Fort Sewall as the moon rose in the evening sky.  At this point I had stopped at Fort Beach to take [...]

Moored by Moonlight under the Harvest Moon

Long after the Harvest Moon rose, I stayed along Front Street and watched the moonlight grow brighter and move directly over Marblehead Light.  The boats moored in the harbor were lined up perfectly from this spot and seemed to be bathed in golden moonlight emanating from the lighthouse itself as I chose to compose this image without the moon - focusing instead on its light reflected on the water. As a bonus, the green beacon shone from atop the lighthouse and a gentle breeze lifted the flag which also seemed to grab a bit of moonlight to shine in the [...]

Expecting the Harvest Moon at Lovis Cove

I didn't have high hopes for tonight's Harvest Moon and am very glad that my expectations were proven very, very wrong.  I had scouted out the projected rise of the full moon and decided to shoot from Lovis Cove but had found little motivation as 5:30pm rolled around and I lay on our newly delivered (and far too comfortable couch).  With an effort of will, I gathered my bag, tripod and was out the door. I showed up 15 minutes early and set up near the Barnacle where I was surprised (and flattered) to meet three fans/followers in a span [...]

Vigilante under the Corn Moon

As the full Corn moon rose the other night, I had nearly endless compositions open to me by slightly adjusting my position and the zoom on my lens.  For this shot, I wanted to focus on the J105 I spotted standing alone among a crowd of boats in Marblehead Harbor.  With the naked eye, I couldn't make out the name but, upon coming home and working on images, I realized I had a Vigilante under the corn moon. With the filled harbor, grand houses on the Neck and a perfect full moon overhead, I knew I had to share at [...]

Floating under the Light of the Moon

Tonight's moonrise was quite a sight to behold and I was thankful for a last minute decision to capture the full corn moon rising over the float at Crocker Park.  I had originally planned to capture the moon from along Front Street but arrived to find a seemingly thick marine layer that I was sure would block the composition I had in mind. I made a quick decision to head to Crocker Park instead and arrived in plenty of time to set up.  As I got to the float, I noticed the sign listing the dates of operation as June [...]

By the Light of the Moon at Pond View

This week seemed as good a time as any to share some photos of the moon in Marblehead that hadn't yet seen the light of day.  Today's shot comes from September 2016 and the rise of the Harvest Moon behind Pond View at Redd's Pond. As the full moon rose, the lights at this red house all turned on and I was treated to a beautiful view of warm light shining over the still waters of the pond.
