Old Town House Surrounded by Snow

Another image from the aftermath of the Blizzard of 2015.  Downtown Marblehead definitely saw its share of snow but the road around Old Town House was very well plowed.  I switched to my widest lens for this image of the iconic yellow building without any cars on the street and snow banks visible all along Washington Street. Behind me was an 8 foot tall mountain of snow that had been cleared from the road throughout the night.

State Street After the Blizzard of 2015

Continuing this week's theme of photos captured after the Blizzard of 2015 passed through Marblehead, we come to this image of State Street.  I've shot the houses along State Street countless times and have found a different composition on just about every visit down this street. On this day, I positioned my tripod against the snow bank on the right with one leg shortened and balancing on the 3-4 foot high pile of snow.  This allowed me to focus on the houses with their alternating colors along one side of the street.

Blizzard of 2015 – The House at Lovis Cove

All week I'll be sharing photos captured after the Blizzard of 2015 departed Marblehead having left an official total of 24.5" of snow.  Thankfully the cold temperatures resulted in very light snow and very few power outages.  However, the light snow and strong winds led to incredible drifts (I measured a 48" one in our backyard). One of my first stops on Wednesday morning after the storm departed was Lovis Cove to see how this brown house had fared.  I've captured images of the brown house at Lovis Cove at the peak of storms in the past (see below) and [...]

Falling Snow on Old Town House

Back to last weekend and the more manageable and picturesque view of freshly falling snow that settled over Marblehead.  I mentioned in Monday's post that I had captured images of Old Town House before turning toward State Street. This view of the iconic yellow Old Town House in the middle of Washington Street with the Bus Stop in complementary colors and Abbot Hall just visible in the distance was an easy favorite.  The early morning hour meant there were no cars parked on the street to obstruct the view.

A Blizzard on State Street

As I write today's post, predictions are for Marblehead to receive anywhere from 2 to 3 feet of snow from Monday night through Tuesday.  That led me to my photography archives and this image from February 9, 2013 when we last received almost 2 feet of snow. Once the driving ban was lifted, I headed out to capture scenes of Marblehead after the blizzard.  This view looking up State Street hadn't been shared until now and seemed to be a nice compliment to yesterday's view.

Winter Wonderland on State Street

On Saturday, January 24th, we had one of our first real snow storms of the Winter season.  It had been a while since I was last able to capture images of Marblehead in the freshly falling snow and so, as soon as I woke up, I headed out the door with a few destinations in mind. I shared an image of Fort Sewall over the weekend but this (and another image coming Wednesday) were my favorites from the day.  I had just parked on Washington Street and captured images of Old Town House when I turned the corner and found [...]

Falling Snow at Fort Sewall

On Saturday, January 24th, snow finally fell on Marblehead.  It's been a Winter without snow but we finally received a nice helping of the white stuff.  As I looked out the window in the morning, I noticed the snow sticking to the trees and I knew I had to make my pilgrimage to Fort Sewall. On January 18, 2009, I had captured my favorite image of Fort Sewall in the snow and had returned with almost every snowfall to see if I might be able to improve upon it.  Six years later, I finally had the right conditions.  I came [...]

Redd’s Pond Covered in Snow

Another image of snow - this one from January 3, 2014.  This was a more intense storm during which I captured huge waves crashing on the causeway and later a view of ice from water that had spilled over near the Barnacle. This was a much quieter scene than those with Redd's Pond covered in snow and not a footprint to be found among the blanket of white.

Footprints in the Snow

Hardly any snow has fallen thus far but it seemed appropriate to share this image today leading up to Christmas later in the week.  The image was captured on February 14, 2014 while I explored Crocker Park after a pretty impressive snow storm. I trudged up the small hill from which I could capture Abbot Hall and the houses surrounding it and noted the footprints in the snow.  I decided to use the steps as a (broken) leading line into the scene.

Foliage in the Snow at Gatchell Park

Though the weather forecasters all predicted cold and a wintry mix for Sunday, November 2nd, I don't think I was the only one surprised when the snow started falling in significant amounts and actually sticking.  The strong winds during the start of the storm made shooting impossible but, around 1pm, the winds died down and the snow started falling more gently.  I grabbed my gear and headed out the door with a few shots in mind. I had continued to scout locations with Fall foliage around Marblehead and drove directly to the first spot only to find visibility impacting the [...]
