Capturing the Moment

The night of July 5th, 2016 produced the most beautiful light I have ever encountered in my 9 years in Marblehead and resulted in (now) 13 images shared from this one evening.  It really was a joy to watch the fog develop as the day approached its end and then be awed by the foggy sunset that followed. As much as I strive to capture perfect moments of the town of Marblehead and share its beauty with current and former residents, I have very few images of myself actually capturing these moments.  And so when I spotted a woman pull [...]

September Sunset over the Causeway

I'm sure I'm not the only one who cannot wait for the warm weather of Spring to take hold and usher in long days spent outside.  Today's image continues this week's causeway theme with a view of a beautiful September sunset over the causeway. I lucked out with the timing of this particular sunset and the cumulous clouds that moved over Marblehead Neck just in time to reflect the golden glow of light towards me and off the still waters of the ocean below.  The causeway isn't the focal point of this particular image but serves to guide the viewer's eye [...]

Summer Sunsets on the Harbor

Though it has been great to explore views over Marblehead with my new Phantom 4 Pro, I cannot wait for the mooring to fill with boats and capture warm Summer sunsets on the harbor.  This image was taken on a picture perfect evening in September but we are only five weeks away from seeing boats starting to fill Marblehead harbor for the season.

The Neverending Sunset – Abbot Hall Streaked with Light

This is another image from the incredible sunset of February 18th.  I mentioned previously that the sunset seemed to last forever and so, as a child of the 80's, I couldn't help but title it the Neverending Sunset.  At this point, the light had left the clouds overhead and become concentrated near the horizon.  I zoomed in and composed this image to include Abbot Hall with streaks of light overhead.

Brilliant Sunset on an Empty Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had left the house on February 18th with the hopes of catching a solid sunset.  As you can see, this brilliant sunset far exceeded my expectations.  There's something different about the Winter sun and its accompanying sunsets that makes for these intense pinks when the clouds break just right. As luck would have it, I had positioned myself at Corinthian Lane and was able to capture this brilliant sunset reflecting on an empty Marblehead harbor with a private pier breaking up the foreground and Marblehead's skyline positioned in the lower third of the frame. [...]

Breathtaking View from Corinthian Lane

After six years of capturing images of Marblehead, I had started to wonder if Marblehead could still surprise me with her beauty and then the sunset of September 20th proved that it absolutely could.  I had gone out that night hoping for good light and ended up at Corinthian Lane on a whim.  That decision paid off as one of the most vibrant (and longest lasting) sunsets I had ever witnessed took shape over Marblehead Harbor. I've shared a few shots from this evening already and have many more favorites yet to share as the light continued to change and [...]

Sailing in the Glow of a Foggy Sunset

The night of July 5th offered the most incredible light I have witnessed since starting Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010.  The combination of late day fog and the setting sun made for a breathtaking view of a foggy sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  From my spot at Chandler Hovey Park, I was able to shoot countless scenes as the light changed including a few of folks sailing in the glow of a foggy sunset. I've shared a closer view of a sailboat making its way into the harbor before but also had this vertical view that I couldn't help but share [...]

Boston Skyline from Marblehead – Fifteen Mile View

Though Marblehead is more than fifteen miles away from downtown Boston, the Boston skyline can be clearly seen from a number of spots in town provided conditions are right.  With a borrowed Canon 600mm lens in hand (for shooting tomorrow night's supermoon) and a sky that promised a nice show, I headed out to Ocean Avenue on Marblehead Neck to see if I could capture the view of Boston skyline from our North Shore town. As it turned out, the sunset did not disappoint and the 600mm lens perfectly captured the view of the buildings grouped together.  The only issue [...]

Sunset Silhouette

On October 15th, I had gone out to Crocker Park to shoot the full Hunter moon rising over the Corinthian Yacht Club.  As I shot out over the harbor, I kept looking back at the incredible sunset forming behind me.  As soon as I captured the perfect shot of the moon rising, I raced up to a familiar spot to shoot towards Abbot Hall and capture the last bursts of color in the night sky. The dynamic range between the sky and Abbot Hall was too large for the sensor to capture details in both and so I decided to [...]
