Castle Rock

The Mighty Sea and the Rocky Shore

Today's image comes from December 21, 2012 and a trip to Castle Rock at the tail end of a storm.  I can't recall the specifics of this storm but I still remember the power of the waves thrown towards the rocky shore of Marblehead Neck by the mighty sea. In this frame you can see the remnants of the last wave cascading down the large granite formations while another wave crests and approaches the shore. Castle Rock might be my favorite spot for storm watching and if a storm happens to hit peak power and high tide around sunset, so [...]

Rocky Beach at Castle Rock

Continuing with the week's exploration of Marblehead using a super wide lens, I headed out to Castle Rock at low tide hoping that this lens would allow me to capture the entire beach from a vantage point other than the overlook.  One of the tricky parts of this lens is that it is so wide you have to be careful of including your own shadow in the final image. With the sun behind me, I walked along the rocky beach at Castle Rock and ended up in the shade afforded by a large rock formation.  I used the nearby rock [...]

Purple Sky over Castle Rock

I mentioned in Tuesday's post that I had taken a number of images on August 4th - this is one that I almost missed!  I was set up for sunset at Parker Lane happily shooting boats in Marblehead harbor perched on a rock when I started to wonder if the sunset might fizzle out.  The sky before me was looking less impressive and I happened to look back to compare when I spotted a growing mass of purple sky overhead.  I quickly hopped off the rock and raced to my car with an immediate thought of heading to Castle Rock. [...]

The Lightning Show at Castle Rock

To finish off this 'lightning week', here is an image from August 4th captured from Castle Rock.  I was in the midst of a hiatus from sharing images of Marblehead and had been rediscovering the joy of capturing the beauty of this town.  On this night, I was fortunate to capture a beautiful sunset as well as a lightning storm.  I'll share the sunset photo on another day... This image is actually a composite including the five bolts you see from five different (sequential) exposures to make up the final lightning show.  I'll leave it to you to decide if the [...]

Late Day Light on Castle Rock

On May 12, I was out chasing clouds and ended up following them out to Castle Rock.  I arrived just before 7:00pm and found this incredible late day light bathing the huge rock formation in a golden glow.  You can see the cloud formation I had been chasing serving as a beautiful backdrop for the display of hard rock under soft light.  I only had a few moments to capture this scene before the light faded but was very happy with the results. As it turned out, I was at the Marblehead Arts Association dropping off copies of my Wednesdays [...]

Under the Milky Way at Castle Rock

On Saturday at 2:30am, I left the house in hopes of capturing the Milky Way over Marblehead.  I started off by heading to Fort Sewall and already shared an image of the Milky Way over the harbor, neck and Marblehead Light's green beacon.  Once I finished there, I headed across the causeway hoping to find a spot with less light pollution. I ended up at Castle Rock at 4:00am and set about trying a few compositions.  A standard horizontal image couldn't quite take in the enormity of the scene so I rotated the camera and took seven vertical images that [...]

A Study in Waves at Castle Rock

The running theme this week may well be the 'way back machine' as this image also comes from 2012 - May 16 to be precise.  I had just purchased the Canon 5D mk III full frame camera to replace my aging Canon 50D and was out on a foggy day putting the new gear through its paces. I found myself at Castle Rock watching as wave after wave crashed onto the rocky shore.  I tried to time this exposure to capture the wave at its peak formation before it began to curl into itself and slam into the rocks. Three [...]

Crashing Waves and Flying Birds at Castle Rock

It's been a while since I've shared an image of Castle Rock and this deceptively warm one seemed a great choice leading into a promised warm up for the rest of the week. In fact, this image was captured on December 21, 2012 just before sunset but the cold temperatures were offset by the warm glow of light that surrounded the scene of crashing waves. I was fortunate in this frame to catch a number of birds flying around the water including one perfectly backlit by the reflection of evening light against a wave in the distance.

A View of Sunset at Castle Rock

The final image from a 25 minute outing at Castle Rock is this one of the two benches that allow for prime seating and incredible views of the ocean from Marblehead Neck.  Most consider Castle Rock a perfect spot for watching the sunrise and these benches can't be beat for sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee on a Summer morning. However, with clouds in the sky to reflect the colors of the setting sun, one can find an equally beautiful view of sunset at Castle Rock.  This image captures the full view of Castle Rock facing 180 degrees [...]

Marblehead’s Coastline from Castle Rock

Continuing with Day 4 of the exploration of Castle Rock on a Wednesday afternoon in January.  After capturing the image of the beach at Castle Rock, I climbed back up the stairs and walked to my left to view the expansive Atlantic Ocean and the homes along Marblehead's coastline. The clouds did wonders for this scene and added a strong element to break up the negative space of the sky.  You can make out Tinker's island in the distance as well as a cargo ship making its way along the shipping lines.
