Coming Ashore in the Fog – Waves at Castle Rock

Years ago, I was thrilled to be interviewed by the Marblehead Reporter about my photography and was pleasantly surprised at the headline calling me a Fog-tographer.  I had expressed my love of foggy conditions and, with the quality of light in this image, it really is no wonder that many of my favorite images were captured in the fog. This is another image from the morning of February 25th and was taken near the end of my journey from Little Harbor to Castle Rock.  The fog was picture perfect at this point and created a painterly light that washed over [...]

Coastline in the Fog – Wave Foam on the Neck

On Saturday, February 25th, I woke to find Marblehead enveloped in fog as a result of the Spring-like weather that had offered us several days of warmth.  I ended up chasing the light and fog from Little Harbor to the Neck and came away with enough favorites to share a new foggy image of Marblehead every day this week. Today's image is my second favorite and comes from the outcropping at Castle Rock.  I had just taken what would be my favorite image of the day and walked behind the large rock to explore the view of this section of [...]

Foggy Days at Castle Rock

Since the forecast for today and tomorrow is a mix of rain and fog, I thought I would dive into the archive and share this image of foggy days at Castle Rock taken in May 2012.  Every time I share an image of Castle Rock, I'm reminded of the incredible beauty of this small part of Marblehead Neck.  You could spend hours watching and listening to the surf as it comes to shore and tumbles the rocks creating a perfect symphony of sights and sounds any time of year.

Watching the Storm at Castle Rock

With every storm, I try to make it out to Castle Rock near high tide to watch the incredible power of Mother Nature as waves crash into the shoreline and explode in plumes of white.  With a perfect vantage point on the rock and views North and South, there really is no better place in all of Massachusetts for watching a storm roll in than Castle Rock in Marblehead. Here are three images captured at high tide as Hermine churned offshore. If you haven't seen the video yet, you can experience the storm by clicking below.   [...]

Strawberry Moon on the Summer Solstice – Castle Rock, Marblehead

The full Strawberry moon rose tonight just as we reached the Summer solstice - a phenomenon that occurs approximately every 50 years.  With that knowledge in mind and clear conditions forecast, I planned out spots from which to shoot the full moonrise.  After much deliberation, I decided on Castle Rock as my destination and hoped to shoot the moon against the familiar rocky face of the outcropping. I reached Castle Rock 30 minutes early and used the time to walk over to Nashua Avenue to watch the sunset.  I was treated to some nice color and a composition including Old [...]

Last Light at Castle Rock

In early June 2013, I had gone out near sunset and quite literally chased this small cloud from the house across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck.  I had recently delivered a print to a house overlooking Castle Rock and made a quick call on my way to see if I could shoot from a spot I had eyed the day before. As luck would have it, the cloud floated into a perfect spot and both it and the outcropping known as Castle Rock began to reflect the last light of sunset just as I set up my tripod.  I [...]

Summer Days at Castle Rock

With the gray, raw day that just passed, I was looking for a bright Summer view of Marblehead and found this image from mid-September.  I had received an ultra-wide angle on loan from Canon and was busy putting it through its paces when I decided to try a few compositions at Castle Rock. The lens was proving to be quite challenging in that every part of the frame needed to be used to produce a solid final image.  For this shot, I set up the camera on a tripod very close to the ocean's edge and waited for the moment [...]

Crashing Surf at Castle Rock

On Wednesday, March 2nd, a brief but strong rainstorm swept through Marblehead.  As it left, the sky began to clear and I noted some interesting low clouds skirting above the horizon.  Though I had been fighting a cold for a few days, I decided I had to get out of the house and see if I could find any nice compositions with the rapidly changing light. As tends to be the case, I couldn't stop at just one spot and so, between 11am and 12:15pm, I shot at Fountain Park, various spots along Little Harbor and Doliber Cove, before finishing [...]

Snowy Sunrise at Castle Rock

I've made it a point the last few years to go out on the morning of my birthday to capture the sunrise.  As I was born in mid-February, that means I have a pretty good chance of capturing a snow filled scene.  Such was the case in 2014. On February 19, I headed out with a plan to capture a snowy sunrise at Castle Rock.  It had snowed the night before and I hoped the snow would remain undisturbed for my morning shoot.  I was thrilled to see this blanket of snow at Castle Rock as well as the almost [...]
