Changing Colors at Seaside Park

As I picked up my kids from school yesterday, I stared at this maple tree at Seaside Park wondering if it might reach the peak colors that I've captured in years past. Whether it was the dry summer or other reasons, this particular maple doesn't look as vibrant as I recall from past visits and went into my 'to be published' folder to find this shot from October 4, 2014 for comparison. That year must have been a perfect one because every single leaf on the tree and on the ground was a picture perfect shade of red, orange or [...]

Peak Color at Ware Pond

On Saturday afternoon, I took advantage of relatively calm conditions to fly over Ware pond in hopes of capturing some fall foliage.  Marblehead was between storms and I knew that the coming one with 50-70MPH gusts would destroy what little foliage was to be found around town. As luck would have it, the trees surround the water were displaying peak color (though more than a few bare branches could be seen as well).  For a lackluster year of foliage hunting, this was about as nice of a scene as I could have hoped for.

Spotting Foliage on the Neck

I mentioned yesterday that I had gone out for a second time on Sunday in the hopes of spotting foliage from above and flew my drone from Riverhead Beach.  I spotted a tree sporting bright orange leaves almost immediately and headed across to Marblehead Neck for a closer look. I explored the tree you can see near the water between piers from various angles and heights.  This one was taken at nearly 400 feet above the ground and offered a view of the full depth of the Neck with some foliage apparent near the bird sanctuary.  I made sure to [...]

Flash of Color at Abbot Hall

On Sunday, I finally found some foliage around town and will share five favorite images from two outings this week.  Today's image of a flash of color at Abbot hall quite literally snuck up on me as I was driving along Washington Street out of historic downtown on my way home and spotted red foliage on this tree backlit by the 11:00am sun.  I quickly turned and pulled over to try to capture this beautiful scene. I decided to use my circular polarizer on my widest lens and started off shooting from directly under the tree but found the composition [...]

Fall in the Air over Seaside Park

On Sunday, I watched the sky fill with clouds in the morning but then show signs of breaking up in the afternoon.  I had to pick up my son on the Neck and so I threw the drone in the car and stopped at Seaside Park after picking him up and forcing him to join me. I was surprised to find another drone at the park - this one was a racing model flown by a boy with first person view goggles on.  I was a bit jealous as I set my much larger drone down and flew it in [...]

Hint of Fall at Crocker Park

The last image from Saturday's dawn visit to Crocker Park illustrates this year's lackluster foliage season (thus far).  I had just walked up from my spot where I captured three great images of dawn when I turned to look at this familiar tree.  I had found the early fall season to be disappointing as far as foliage goes - likely due to the dry and too-warm conditions (though I'm not complaining about either of those). As I mentioned yesterday, the sun had disappeared behind thickening clouds and I was able to grab just a bit of sunrise color behind the [...]

Granite and Foliage at Waterside

As the calendar turns to October, I've started to look for signs of foliage around town.  The maple at Gatchell has long since turned and started to lose its leaves while the one at Seaside Park has a dull burnt look so far this year.  I found this brilliant display of foliage from Waterside Cemetery taking in mid-October 2012 and thought I would share it today. Have you found any good displays of foliage around town yet? Please let me know where in a comment below.  Thanks!

Fall Colors at Tedesco Country Club

Last Fall proved to be a down year for foliage in Marblehead after the drought took hold of our town for much of the Summer and Fall.  And so, when I spotted this crop of trees displaying their Fall colors at the Tedesco Country Club on an early November evening, I had to pull over and capture the scene. The light of sunset was soft and not at all dramatic but that seemed to suit the subtle colors in this small group of trees.

Last Sail of the Season

Long before the Hunters moon rose on October 15th, I had made my way onto Marblehead Neck and discovered just a hint of Fall foliage across the shore.  I had my longest lens on the camera in anticipation of the moon rise later in the night and composed this image to include Abbot Hall, the Boston Yacht Club and houses all surrounded by spots of Fall color.  Just when I thought I had the perfect composition, I spotted this sailboat returning from what was presumably its last sail of the season. Speaking of the BYC, I will be participating in [...]

Peak Foliage at Waterside Cemetery

This year's drought and weather meant poor conditions for catching peak foliage in Marblehead.  As it turned out, October 2012 offered ample opportunities to capture trees in their full Autumn brilliance - and especially so at Waterside Cemetery. This shot of a maple tree displaying peak foliage at Waterside Cemetery was captured on a picture perfect mid-October day.  I decided to include the rock wall as a frame for the image to counter the sky and tree (as well as hide other elements to the right of the image).
