Redd’s pond

Summer Dawn at Redd’s Pond

Today's image was taken at dawn on July 1st, 2015.  I had woken up early in order to shoot the dawn breaking over Doliber Cove and then quickly drove over to Redd's Pond when I noticed the clouds reflecting that morning light. I shared another image from this morning shortly after taking it but had created this panorama version as well.  Though the pink light of dawn was more vibrant in the single frame, there was something about capturing the full length of this pond that appealed to me.

A Blanket of Snow over Redd’s Pond

Exactly one year ago, Marblehead was buried under feet of snow as wave after wave of snow storms added up to a record setting Winter.  As we make our way through the mildest Winter in memory, it may finally be time to share some of those images of snow captured during the Winter of 2015. On Wednesday, February 25th, I made my way around town to try to capture images that could convey the incredible snowfall that had descended on Marblehead.  As luck would have it, a fresh coating of snow had fallen the night before and I was able to [...]

A Nearly Frozen Redd’s Pond

Most years, Redd's Pond is frozen during the month of January and makes for a perfect spot to lace up skates and fly across the pond with family and friends.  This year's very mild January meant that Redd's Pond never fully froze and those picturesque scenes never materialized. I drove to Redd's Pond on January 24th after a brief cold snap to check the status of the pond and found a beautiful scene before me.  The water seemed to be caught in stages of freezing but hadn't quite made it all the way to the middle.  You can see a [...]

Fall Sunset at Redd’s Pond

On Sunday night, my son and I ventured out to scout out a new location for a shoot.  It was great having him with me to help carry gear and bat away mosquitos as I explored a new-to-me vantage point.  We packed up as the sun began to set on a cloudless sky and made our way home to catch the second half of the Patriots game. As we rounded the corner at Redd's Pond, I saw this scene before me and, before I said a thing, my son asked if we were going to stop and shoot the sunset....that's [...]

Pink Dawn on Redd’s Pond

On July 1st, I had woken up around 4:30am in order to capture the dawn and rising sun over Doliber Cove.  Shortly after the sun rose, I raced back to my car and headed to Redd's Pond where I hoped the trees might offer some cover from the sun's strong glow and allow me a few more opportunities to capture the pink dawn that had developed. As it turned out, I made it just in the nick of time.  The pink clouds visible low in the morning sky and reflected in the still water of Redd's Pond burned off within five minutes [...]

The Fishing Spot

On Friday, May 29, a dense fog descended on Marblehead and I decided on an impromptu photoshoot as soon as I got home.  I started on the Neck shooting boats in the mist (I'll share that image tomorrow) before deciding to check the conditions at Redd's Pond.  I started by shooting some favorite compositions but then walked towards the street for a wider view.  As I did, I spotted this young boy walking along the path with fishing rod in hand searching for a favorite fishing spot.  I took a few quick shots as he walked in front of me [...]

Sailboats at Redds Pond

Continuing this week's theme of black and white images of Marblehead comes this scene from Redd's Pond captured on June 15, 2014.  I had been out capturing images using my old dSLR converted to shoot in infrared and had happened upon a few sailboats at Redd's Pond. The infrared image serves to accentuate the foliage in the trees and sails on the boats while pushing the blue sky and water towards deeper shades of black when converted to black and white. You can see other black and white images in this gallery:

Frozen Reflection at Redd’s Pond

It seems like forever since the ice at Redd's Pond has been visible, let alone skate-able.  Before all of this snow, we actually had perfect conditions for ice formation and I took my kids to skate on Redd's Pond on several occasions. This image comes from New Years Day when I returned to Redd's Pond to find it empty near sunset with great light reflecting off the red house named Pond View and Old Burial Hill.  The ice acted as a mirror to perfectly reflect the house, light and clouds with the setting moon just visible.  The seams in the ice added [...]

Moon Reflecting On Frozen Redd’s Pond

It's become a tradition for me to share my annual New Year's Day slideshow and this year's 10-minute show received an incredible welcome.  Another part of the day's tradition is going out to shoot. I've captured some incredible sunrises on New Year's Day in the past few years but couldn't motivate for the early morning awakening this year.  Instead, I drove around as sunset approached searching for a new composition. With the recent cold temperatures, I thought I might find some frozen waters but struck out along the shore.  I then stopped at Black Joe's and Redd's ponds and found [...]

Redd’s Pond Covered in Snow

Another image of snow - this one from January 3, 2014.  This was a more intense storm during which I captured huge waves crashing on the causeway and later a view of ice from water that had spilled over near the Barnacle. This was a much quieter scene than those with Redd's Pond covered in snow and not a footprint to be found among the blanket of white.
