Pond Skating on New Years Day

I have had this image of pond skating at Redd's in mind for years and was so thrilled to have finally captured it. In 2010, Vincent Laforet captured an aerial image of skaters at Rockefeller center from a helicopter and what struck me about the shot was the shadows telling the story of what each skater was doing. I considered hiring my own helicopter or plane for a similar image over Redds Pond but that held too many complications and variables.  A few years ago, drones came on the market but the early ones had cameras better suited for video [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #7 Perfect Morning at Redd’s Pond

When it came time to decide on my top 10 images of 2017, I found myself eyeing several recent images for inclusion and ended up with 4 of the top 10 having been taken in December.  I can't decide if that is due to some bias on my end to favor photos taken recently and thereby still holding strong memories of the shoot or a unique effect this year with some truly picture perfect conditions. For #7, I decided on this photos of a truly perfect morning at Redd's Pond.  I've captured Redd's partially frozen before but never with such [...]

Perfect Morning at Redds Pond

As I went to bed on Saturday night, I looked out the window and noted the freshly fallen snow was sticking firmly to the tree branches with very little wind that might ruin the effect by morning.  With that in mind, I set an alarm hoping for a few snow-filled scenes to shoot on what promised to be a perfect morning. I was out of the house by 6:30am and headed straight to Little Harbor to see what the Peach's boat looked like with some snow atop the small Christmas tree. The view did not disappoint and I shot a [...]

By the Light of the Moon at Pond View

This week seemed as good a time as any to share some photos of the moon in Marblehead that hadn't yet seen the light of day.  Today's shot comes from September 2016 and the rise of the Harvest Moon behind Pond View at Redd's Pond. As the full moon rose, the lights at this red house all turned on and I was treated to a beautiful view of warm light shining over the still waters of the pond.

Sailing on Redd’s Pond

On a recent Sunday, I decided to head out and capture aerial images of Marblehead's ponds.  One of my first stops was at this familiar one where I found model boats sailing on Redd's pond.  As the guys maneuvered their boats using remote controls to control the sails, I piloted my aerial drone overhead and found this composition. I tried to find a perfect spot from which I could capture the action on Redd's pond as well as the vibrant trees and red house across the water.  At the same time, I was hoping to catch a mirrored image of [...]

Golden Light on Redd’s Pond

On February 18, conditions seemed perfect for a beautiful Winter sunset and I left the house just after 4:00 to explore the possibilities.  I started off at this familiar spot and made it here just in time as the sun's angle was spilling golden light on Redd's Pond.  I shot three frames with my camera before heading back to the car to grab the Phantom 4 Pro.  It wasn't long before I found the composition I wanted which showcased the close proximity of Redd's Pond to Old Burial Hill, Gerry Island, Fort Sewall and Marblehead Neck. One of my favorite aspects of [...]

First Freeze at Redd’s Pond

I went out last night with camera and drone in hand hoping for good light at sunset to capture aerial views of Marblehead.  I decided to try my luck at Redd's Pond and was disappointed with the light but happy to find the first freeze of the season had created a perfect layer of ice above the water.  While the ice wasn't thick enough to stand on, it did serve as a beautifully reflective surface and, as luck would have it, a Christmas tree was glowing in the window of one of the red houses across the pond. With the [...]

Quiet Reflections at Redd’s Pond

In early August, I had gone out at mid-day to explore Marblehead under perfectly cloudy skies.  I stopped at Redd's Pond at what seemed like the perfect time as the light breeze abated and allowed the water to calm - reflecting the house across the water and trees surrounding it. I had to wait for the sun to poke out through the clouds to get the lighting I wanted and, during that time, spent a while in quiet reflections at Redd's Pond.  Not a bad spot for that...

Read the Sign at Redd’s Pond

How many of you have noticed the sign at Redd's Pond?  How many have actually read it??? I visited this iconic New England pond a few weeks ago and spent most of my time at the water's edge capturing the clouds reflecting in the still water.  As I walked towards the car, I looked back and saw this composition of the sign leading the viewer's eye towards the pond and the red house across the way. If you can't make out the sign, it provides a fair amount of interesting information.  There is a section on excessive algae growth and [...]

Summer Days at Redd’s Pond

Two weeks ago, I decided to take a hiatus from Wednesdays in Marblehead to allow me time to explore this town and bring back that sense of adventure and awe that used to come with each outing.  I had found that I was going to the same spots over and over and getting decent images but few that brought back that feeling of wonder and excitement.  For those two weeks, the camera remained tucked away (except for that incredible rainbow and lightning at sunset outing and a commissioned shoot of a house). Yesterday, as cumulous clouds finally crossed over Marblehead, [...]
