From the Rooftops – Through the Window of St Michaels Church

As I mentioned in yesterday's sunrise post, I spent the New Year of 2013 the same way I had started 2012 - climbing up to the top of the steeple of a church in Marblehead.  This time it was St Michaels and Steve Clay accompanied me.  We made it to the steeple only to find two barriers in the way - chicken wire and thick wooden louvres on each window.  I had noticed one window on the level below so we headed back down to see if there were any photos to be had there.  As I peered to the [...]

From the Rooftops – The Cupola of Old North Church

It has been almost exactly one year since I made the trek up to the top of the Old North Church with Rhod Sharp.  It was New Years Day of 2012 when we climbed up to the cupola...only to find the interior fogged.  While Rhod managed to find a way out at the balcony below, I shot two images of the interior under dawn's light.  I shared the first a while back but decided to bring this image out as the New Year approaches. This will be my last image shared in 2012.  Come back to the page for my [...]

From the Rooftops – Out the Attic of Old Town House

Last week, I shared the story of climbing up the ladder to explore the nearly 300 year old attic of the Old Town House.  I had about 15 minutes to shoot from the two windows that looked out on Washington Street below and, with the traffic from the annual Christmas Walk, timing those shoots was very difficult.  This was another favorite image looking out of this great old window.

From the Rooftops – Looking Down Washington Street

On Saturday, after watching the Christmas Walk parade, my seven year old son begged me to take him to the GAR/Civil War museum on the second floor of the Old Town House.  We had been there before but I had heard this was the last weekend it would be open and so I agreed.  We walked up the steps and under a ladder before making our way through the exhibits.  As we got ready to leave, I couldn't help but ask why the ladder was up and the attic door open.  It was explained that they were beginning preparations for [...]

From the Rooftops – The Balcony on Lee Street

On Tuesday, I came home from work to find the latest issue of Marblehead Home and Style magazine opened on our kitchen counter with a feature about me and this page!  I was honored and thrilled to see the story and, upon reading it, realized that I had not shown a 'rooftop' view since May.  I went back to my archives and found one of my early rooftop shots that had not yet been posted to the site. When I first thought of shooting Marblehead 'from above', the only way I could come up with for finding vantage points was [...]

From the Air – Abbot Hall

Back to the air for this Thurday 'From the Rooftops' image.  A few weeks ago, I took to the air in a Cessna piloted by Aviv Hod and we flew over town.  You can read the full account here but, suffice it to say, it was a fairly quick trip.  I did manage to get it together for a few shots and, when we made our way over this iconic building, all fear was put aside and I tried for the best composition possible.  Enjoy this aerial view of Abbot hall and, if you live nearby, see if you can [...]

From the Rooftops – Devereux Beach Carnival

The Senior High Carnival took place on Devereux Beach a bit earlier this year and, as expected, it rained...and rained.  From Thursday through Saturday we had either rain, thick fog or just raw conditions that made for less than ideal conditions for a carnival.  But, as in every other year, we got one perfect day on Sunday and the place was mobbed.  I burned through $40 in under an hour but the smiles on my kids' faces was worth it. They didn't realize it but I pocketed 4 tickets and came back in the late afternoon to take a ride [...]

From the Rooftops – The Town and Abbot Hall

Just when I thought I would run out of rooftop views, this location literally fell into my lap!  A friend from Marblehead who had recently moved to London was visiting and rented an incredible condo at 18 Prospect Street.  We headed over there for dinner and I brought my camera when I heard about the rooftop balcony view of Abbot.  Though we ended up losing the light pretty fast, this scene before me made for a great outing. I love the view of Abbot Hall standing tall among the houses below.  It feels a bit like a castle on the [...]

Old Norths Bell

So this one is a rooftop view by technicality (but I was running low on material for this theme).  When we made our way up (and out) of the Old North Church's cupola, we passed this great old bell and I just had to grab an image of it.  The bell is huge and imposing - even more so with the welded seams underneath.  When I came home and examined the image up close, I could just make out H.N. Hooper & Co Boston, MA.  When I looked that up, I became more intrigued. From the Wikipedia entry: Henry Northey [...]

From the Rooftops – The Landing

Soon, very soon!  On this rainy, gray morning, we just need to remember that soon we'll be able to enjoy this town at its finest.  Boats in the harbor, blue skies overhead, the sun at our back... This image was taken back in early September from the Harbor Wharfs Condo where I started the From the Rooftops project.  I shared an image from here looking back up State Street but this panorama gives you a better sense of what it was like on this late Fall day to stand and look out at the Landing below and the harbor beyond. [...]
