Marblehead Harbor

Fast Company and Bright Stars

On the morning of November 14, I had gone out before dawn to capture the third and final image of the supermoon setting behind Abbot Hall.  After it had set, I swapped lenses and waited for the break of dawn which brought with it a clear but beautiful pink-orange sky over Abbot Hall. Two boats were clearly visible in mid-harbor: Fast Company III and Bright Stars so, without much else in mind for a title of today's image, I decided to borrow the boat names.

Sailing in the Harbor

As I waited for the supermoon to rise over Chandler Hovey Park, I spotted this sailboat making its way into Marblehead Harbor.  I quickly adjusted my camera settings and made use of the incredible 600mm lens to isolate the boat sailing in the harbor against the sunlit backdrop of houses on the Neck. With the days getting colder and sunset arriving sooner and sooner, this image of the crew of the Rozi enjoying one of the last sails of the season seemed a good way to start off the weekend.  Don't forget to visit me at the BYC on Saturday from [...]

Pink Sky and the Hint of Moonrise

October's Hunters Moon came up during a surprisingly nice sunset and, between the two phenomena, I was like a kid in a candy store from my perch at Crocker Park.  It was only fitting then that at the first hint of moonrise over Marblehead Neck, the sky turned cotton candy pink. I composed this image to include the boats in Marblehead harbor reflecting the last glow of sunlight and with Marblehead Light's green beacon signaling the sunset.

Sailing Past the Eastern Yacht Club

Another image from October 15 and one that came as I waited for the full moon to rise over Marblehead harbor.  I had set up at Crocker Park and used a borrowed lens with an incredible 400mm of zoom to explore the familiar harbor.  I spotted this sailboat coming into the mouth of the harbor and captured a few images of it as its sails reflected the light of the evening sun.  Finally, I caught the boat in perfect light while sailing past the Eastern Yacht Club. The appearance of the two sails and masts intrigued me - does anyone [...]

Masts and Steeples on a Foggy Evening

On the evening of July 5th, an incredible display of fog descended upon Marblehead Harbor and I was fortunate to have been at Chandler Hovey Park from where I capture image after image as conditions quickly changed.  As the fog reached its peak, it created a sepia-like tone to the view of boats in Marblehead harbor and I found this composition made up mostly of ship masts and steeples in the foreground.  The fog hid nearly all other houses across the water and created a scene that seemed at once suited to the works of Renaissance masters rather than anything [...]

Sunset over Inner Marblehead Harbor

As I waited for the moon to rise on Saturday night, I was treated to an unexpected sunset over inner Marblehead harbor.  I had only checked weather and cloud forecasts as far as the moonrise was concerned and hadn't expected anything as beautiful as this sunset which spanned the inner harbor and causeway. I'm not sure if 'inner Marblehead harbor' is the right term for this area but was at a loss if a better nautical term existed. There were just enough boats moored in the harbor to add a needed element that broke up the water while also showing [...]

Corinthian Yacht Club on a late Summer Evening

The Corinthian Yacht Club was organized over 130 years ago and stands along Corinthian Lane as the Neck curves into Marblehead Harbor.  On the evening of September 20, I had gone out to capture the late Summer fog that had rolled into the harbor and decided on shooting from Corinthian Lane (and the shores below) in what would turn out to be a perfect spot to capture an incredible sunset. Before the sun set, the subtle fog in the harbor served to soften the evening light and set a nice glow on the facade of the Corinthian Yacht Club.  While [...]

Fighting the Current

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with rain in the forecast and with the crisp Fall air signaling the coming close of boating season.  As an offshore storm sent crashing waves into Marblehead beaches and Castle Rock, the harbor offered some protection for boats moored within its borders.  However, this one wooden sailboat perched near the mouth of the harbor was definitely fighting the current as whitecaps formed clear across the harbor. I'm not sure who owns this boat or even what class or type it might be but its clean lines and beautiful wooden [...]

The Float at Crocker Park

I was at Crocker Park at sunset during a high tide and couldn't pass up the chance to photograph the float beckoning people to enjoy Marblehead Harbor's waters on a warm Summer evening.  The float at Crocker Park was taken in before the recent storm passed through town.  Does anyone know if it was put back in place yet?

Storm in the Harbor

After capturing images of surfers at Devereux Beach and then crossing over the causeway to shoot crashing waves at Crocker Park, I circled around Marblehead Neck to the secret beach on Cove Lane to view the storm in the harbor.  I noted a lone sailboat fighting against the wind and waves and then turned toward the main part of the harbor to find boats being lifted up on whitecaps as their ropes pulled taut against moorings. This shot captured one boat being lifted in the air at the crest of a small wave as the Old North Church and houses [...]
