Snow in Marblehead – Chandler Hovey Park

Snow week continues on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  Seemed like a good opportunity to bring some of these snow themed images to light as we have yet to experience our first real storm of the Winter season. Today's image is from an early January day in 2010.  We were still relatively new to Marblehead having moved here in May of 2008 and this was only our second Winter.  I had made my way out to Fort Sewall to capture the freshly fallen snow and took this shot exactly one minute after another that I had already shared and which recently was printed [...]

Snow in Marblehead – Little Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post the the seasonably cold temperatures had started to put me in the mindset of snow and, having not had any storms to shoot yet, left me to explore the archive of to-be-posted images.  I shared an image from the end of December yesterday.  Today, we turn back to January 16, 2013 when I went out in the middle of a storm to capture the freshly falling flakes. I wound up taking one of my favorite images of Redds pond during this storm - LINK - but also captured a number of other scenes of snow [...]

Snow in Marblehead – The Three Icons

So far, November has been cold (bitterly so at times) but only a few flakes have hit the ground.  With twenty-five unpublished images of snow waiting to be shared, I thought I would take advantage of the seasonably cold weather to show some images of snow from years past. This image was taken on the morning of December 30, 2012.  Our first winter storm had gone through with expectations of 6 inches of snow to fall over the weekend.  We got a little less than that in Marblehead and the crews did a great job of clearing the streets.  I [...]

A Blizzard Comes to Washington Street

As I sit down to write this post on June 24th, I find myself at the end of an oppressively hot day with another on the horizon.  With that as background, I decided to dive into the archive and bring out the first 'cold' image of the Summer. This shot of Washington Street comes from the Blizzard of 2013 that descended on Marblehead in early February.  We ended up with over 20 inches of snow, driving bans and cold.  What better way to escape the heat than to be reminded of this scene that happened only 4 months ago? It is also [...]

The Snow Trap at Tedesco Country Club

Is it safe to post photos of snow yet?  I know I'm tired of seeing the white stuff but have to admit it can make for some incredible photo opportunities.  In late December, we had a particular good sized storm.  The day after, the sun came up behind a bank of clouds and produced great diffused light.  This was just what I had needed for this particular image and I head out to Tedesco Country Club to see if I could capture what I had visualized.  As I made my way on the greens, I noted the sand trap was covered [...]

Snow Capped Houses and Abbot Hall

Back to the Blizzard of 2013 for this image of Abbot Hall taken from Crocker Park.  I love this view of Abbot Hall and have shot from this spot on a number of occasions and in various conditions.  When I was trudging through the almost two feet of snow that fell during the Blizzard of 2013, I knew that I would have to make it over to Crocker Park for a snowy version of this composition.  While the walk was brutal at times, the view did not disappoint with snow capped houses seemingly stacked on each other and leading up [...]

Old Town House After the Blizzard

Though snow was due to fall in Marblehead this weekend, I was away at a conference and thus could not photography the aftermath (or help shovel out our driveway).  Instead, I decided to post this image from the Blizzard of 2013 in advance hoping that the weekend storm would pale in comparison.  As I mentioned before, I couldn't wait until the driving ban was lifted after the snow finished falling and set out for Old Town when the clock struck 4pm.  This was one of my first stops.  The roads were mostly cleared and I looked for ways to show [...]

State Street After the Blizzard

Hope you aren't tiring of images of snow because I have a lot more to post.  This one comes from the evening that the Blizzard of 2013 ended.  The driving ban had been lifted at 4 and I made my way to Washington Street and then State Street to try to capture the aftermath.  Though I have photographed State Street a number of times, I have never found a good composition for these two houses that stand near Front Street and the harbor beyond.  On this day, as I turned up Front Street and looked up State, the composition practically [...]

Blowing Snow and the Boston Skyline

What an incredible weekend!  The Blizzard of 2013 rolled through and dumped snow continuously from Friday afternoon through most of Saturday.  I had decided to try my hand at a timelapse and set up my camera looking out our window at the street.  Using an intervalometer set to shoot at 5 minute intervals, I ended up with 228 images that combined to a 10 second synopsis of the storm.  I posted the result on my Facebook page and on this site over the weekend and the response was incredible.  I've never had anything truly 'go viral' before but this video [...]

Sunset After the Blizzard

If there's one thing you can count on with a good storm, it's that a solid sunset/sunrise will usually follow.  So as the Blizzard of 2013 (Nemo to some) finished dumping 20+ inches of snow and as the driving ban finally expired at 4pm, I took off to shoot the after effects.  I started off in Old Town and spent some time up and down Washington Street and walking out to Crocker Park, back through State Street...  It was quite a trek.  As I made my way back from State Street, I noted the light starting to take shape.  I [...]
