Opening Day

This aerial image of opening day for baseball in Marblehead was captured almost exactly two years ago - April 28, 2018. While baseball season has been postponed and crowds of kids and parents can't line the outfield at Gatchell Park quite yet, these traditions will return at some point in the future.

Above an Empty Harbor

I bought my drone (the Phantom 4 Pro) in November 2016 and, shortly after, became a certified pilot. On April 12, 2017, I decided to explore Marblehead Harbor from the air and flew above an empty harbor to this spot overlooking the Neck. With the clouds overhead reflecting in the still waters of the harbor and the empty moorings dotting the water, I discovered a new appreciation for this 'between season'. Despite the limited foliage on trees and the emptiness of the harbor, there is something hopeful about this image - a feeling of something to look forward to or [...]

Beach Party

No April Fools Jokes this year but rather a hopeful look forward to a similar beach party scene taking place at Devereux Beach this summer. Everytime I look at this image, I notice something new. Between the sunbathers on the beach, the swimmers in the ocean and those on the wet sand in between, there are endless micro scenes to explore.

Abbot from Above

Almost exactly three years ago (March 29, 2017), I flew my drone high over Lee Street at sunset to capture a view of the whole of Abbot from above. It's hard to capture the full breadth of this building but this aerial views allowed me to not only get all of Abbot Hall in the frame but also the varied architectural styles and colors of houses surrounding the building.

Dusting of Snow on Downtown Marblehead

Today's image comes from my 'to be posted' archive and continues the theme of images of snow in Marblehead from past winters. This aerial shot was captured on the morning of March 14, 2018 after a dusting of snow fell and I was able to capture historic downtown Marblehead with its familiar landmarks blanketed in white. If you would like to see these images without realizing on FB/IG, I added an easy sign up for my daily and/or weekly email digests that include all images posted to Wednesdays in Marblehead. You can sign up below any of my current/prior posts. [...]

Flying above Marblehead

It's been a while since I've taken my drone flying over Marblehead and so I decided to go through my 'to be posted' archive focusing on images taken from the air to share today. I stopped at this one captured on June 20.2017 that was accomplished by capturing several sequential images and then merging them into this panoramic view of Marblehead Neck and the harbor filled with boats. The cumulus clouds overhead helped balance the final image and made for a beautiful late spring/early summer view of Marblehead that rivals any viewed from an airplane.

Fluen Point

One of the first things I did with my drone was explore some favorite spots around town from vantage points of 100 to 400 feet in the air. Once I grew accustomed to those views, I sought out other areas in Marblehead that had escaped my ability to capture from the ground. On this particular early evening on August 6, 2017, I had flown up over Beacon Street to capture views of Black Joes Pond and Doliber Cove only to then turn the drone and find this view of Fluen Point laid out before me. With boats moored in the [...]

Rocky Shores of Chandler Hovey Park

Sunday, September 1st was the first time I had been out to capture new photos in nearly a month and, with the nice cloud cover, I decided to bring along my drone. I had flown the drone only once in the past year having spent much of 2017 and 2018 exploring Marblehead from the air. I had realized that the drone offered other possibilities than simply shooting from 100-400 feet in the air and had an idea in mind when I drove out to the Neck. I arrived to find the parking lot at Chandler Hovey packed on this Labor [...]

Marblehead Fourth

This will be the first year since moving to Marblehead that I will miss the annual fireworks show. With that in mind, I thought I would share an image from last year's show that was years in the making and ended up offering me a completely new prospective on a Marblehead Fourth of July celebration. I purchased my drone several years ago and, shortly thereafter, obtained my drone pilot license for commercial photography. It was then that I realized what hurdles I would need to pass in order to realize this shot that I had envisioned. I had to devise [...]

Reflections on the Neck

On September 10, 2017 I flew my drone from Chandler Hovey Park and skimmed over the water to the green channel marker. Having captured that shot, I rose a few hundred feet in the air and took in the full view of Marblehead Neck. As the sun set, I noticed its light reflection off the window of a home along the water and captured this image.  That lone cloud was later joined by a second and created nice light over the Neck. I shared three images from this night previously but saved this one in my To Be Published folder. [...]
