Rain or Shine for the Marblehead Carnival

The Marblehead Carnival is in town!  For those who didn't notice the non-stop rain that always accompanies the Senior carnival or the signs posted around town, this will serve as your official notice to head to Devereux Beach for fried dough, old school rides and a fun four days. While the inclement weather has approached the feel of a running joke, the fog and rain have made for some great conditions to photograph the annual event.  Today's image comes from May 1, 2014 and an empty night at the carnival.  As you can see, recent rains had formed puddles in [...]

Surfing in Marblehead

After the strong Winter storm came through leaving about 6 inches of snow on the ground (much better than DC's 2 feet), incredible waves formed off Devereux Beach.  I had just taken the kids sledding at Seaside Park and decided to head to Devereux on a friend's recommendation who had spotted surfers in the water. We arrived and parked along the causeway as the lot was closed.  The scene that awaited us was straight out of Hawaii.  Huge waves, green water and surfers riding the frigid Atlantic ocean.  The waves were the tallest I had ever seen in Marblehead and the [...]

Lifeguard Chair on an Empty Beach

I was searching in the archives for an image to share and found this one of a lifeguard chair on an empty Devereux beach that I thought fit with the current heatwave making it finally feel like Summer.  Then I looked at the date this photo was taken - July 21, 2014 (exactly one year ago) - and that clinched it. I don't remember the fog that descended on Marblehead last Summer but the view of a lone lifeguard chair and a beach seeming to go on forever into the foggy mist was one that I thought others might enjoy.

Golden Reflections

Back once more to the evening of May 12 and the clouds over the Atlantic Ocean as seen from Devereux Beach.  The impressive cloud formation that I shared earlier in the week gradually coalesced and became more compacted near the horizon.  As the sun set, it threw its light towards the clouds which served to project golden reflections that easily shone on the still ocean water.

Beauty in the Clouds

On May 12, I headed down to Devereux Beach having chased these clouds from my house.  Though I usually use clouds to help highlight another element in the scene, for this image I wanted to focus on the beauty in the clouds.  The intricate structures within the expansiveness of these clouds made for a great subject and I used the still Atlantic ocean as a reflector of the bright colors.

Rainbows and Storm Clouds

On Tuesday, May 12th, I decided to play hooky from a meeting that promised to be both boring and less than useful by heading to Devereux Beach.  There wasn't anything interesting predicted for sunset but, when I arrived at Devereux, I found impressive clouds with great structure extending up from the horizon.  As I waited for the clouds to build and for the sun to drop lower in the sky, I set up for a panorama along the causeway that would end up as a more than 87 megapixel image when all was said and done (I'll share that later in the [...]

Night of the Carnival

It's here!  The annual Devereux Beach carnival is this weekend and it looks like we'll finally have good weather for the entire duration of it.  While the children of Marblehead will no doubt be thrilled to enjoy the carnival on what promises to be a rain-free weekend, I can't help but look back to images from last year when the weather was perfect for this photographer. We had rain and fog on this first weekend in May and the carnival was fairly empty at night due to the conditions.  While others stayed home, I had the run of the small [...]

Framing the Sunset

On Friday night, I borrowed a wide angle lens from a friend in order to shoot the Milky Way later that night/early the next morning.  With a new lens in hand, I couldn't help looking for something to shoot and drove around town as the sun slowly set and clouds moved across the sky until I settled on Devereux Beach as the best vantage point. I photographed the ocean for a while as the clouds began to take on the pink hue of sunset and then quickly walked up to the pavilion and placed the tripod close to the ground.  I [...]

Cold Water and Warm Sunsets

While this image was captured in December 2014, you would be hard pressed to differentiate the view from one in Summer.  We had a fairly mild start to what would turn into a record-breaking Winter and I had gone out on this evening to photograph at Devereux Beach. The cold water got me a few times as I set up to capture this warm December sunset looking out over Marblehead Neck.

Purple Sky and Smooth Sand at Devereux Beach

On September 9, 2014, I witnessed one of the most incredible sunsets of my life.  The view was made even more amazing by my choice of Devereux Beach to serve as backdrop.  Some combination of storm and incredibly low tides had transformed what is normally a fairly rocky beach into this beautiful smooth sand version. I'll bet many longtime 'Headers would have been hard pressed to name this as Devereux Beach based on the conditions. More images of Marblehead without snow coming throughout the week.  Stay tuned...
