Fort Beach

Fort Beach and the Neck

I went out twice yesterday and left my gear in the car 'just in case' only to completely miss the potential for a nice sunset; let alone a rainbow and lightning that I saw posted later that night.  Misses like that where I stand looking up at the sky and realizing it's too late to do anything but marvel at the light make me appreciate the times that I do make it to the right spot at the right time. This shot comes from mid-August and followed another stormy day in Marblehead. I arrived at Fort Beach a little before [...]

Low Tide at Fort Beach

On Wednesday, I headed out the door to chase storms at Riverhead (that shot is coming tomorrow) before making my way to Fort Beach in the hopes of capturing a rainbow (I didn't but got one at Castle Rock an hour later).  While at Fort Beach, I wandered up and down Front Street in search of new compositions that did not rely on the Great Tree at the Fort. When i moved far enough over, I was able to hide the emptiness of Fort Sewall with some foliage while also lucking out with a scattered collection of boats at low [...]

Under the Cloud

After nearly ten years of Wednesdays in Marblehead, I've lost count of how many times I've shot the same scene - like this one of boats gathered at the mouth of the harbor as viewed from Fort Beach. But all it takes is one element to dramatically change the composition as in this one where the same scene changes under the cloud bathed in perfect golden light. Rather than focusing on the familiar boats, the eye wanders up to the sky and appreciates the texture and color of the cloud in a familiar landscape. Just goes to show why capturing [...]

Fort Beach Reflections

We'll end the week with one of my favorite summer outings every - July 3, 2018. I had just left the Crocker Park music festival (part of the annual Marblehead Festival of Arts that has been cancelled this year). I made my way to Front Street and then up a bit where the road curves to Fort Sewall. From here I was able to capture the first part of a sunset that would end up turning pink and purple and creating an incredible display over the harbor. This was captured as the first light of the setting sun lit up [...]

This Too Shall Pass

On Friday March 13th, I chased a passing storm and ended up on Front Street from where I started off shooting a tight composition of the lighthouse and Neck with some waves breaking on the rocks of Fort Beach. I later zoomed out and captured the full view including the missing Great Tree and shared that image earlier. I came back to this image this weekend after my first week 'off' work. As a part-owner of our Allergy practice, I have not been off at all. We have tried to pivot to telemedicine all while grappling with the very real [...]

Gone but not Forgotten

On Friday, March 13th, on what would end up being my last real day of work for the forseeable future, I headed out at 5:30pm to chase some light. I had no destination in mind as I drove down Pleasant Street then State. I pulled into and out of the Landing lot and then headed down Front Street until I pulled over at Fort Beach. That spot offered me the best view of the interesting clouds and light over Chandler Hovey Park and I started off shooting a tight composition of that section of this image with my zoom extended. [...]

Fort Beach Sunset

I'm not sure if this summer has had fewer amazing sunsets or if I've missed them with travels and other plans but I was amazed to find one incredible sunset after another in my 'to be posted' archive when I scrolled to last summer. This is a shot from July 3, 2018 and one of the most incredible displays of light I have encountered since moving to Marblehead. The light changed so fast and cycled through so many colors and cloud formations that each shot of the Fort Beach sunset was different and, at least in my mind, worth sharing. [...]

Fort Sunrise

I hadn't been back to Fort Sewall since the day after the storm that took down large pieces of what I affectionately called the Giving Tree. I had woken up early this morning for a different shoot after noticing the Hotel Marblehead's new paint job (watch for that shot tomorrow). I finished shooting from Pleasant Street and was disappointed in the lack of fog or a nice sunrise and was all set to turn back home when I decided to continue down to Fort Beach and see what had become of the tree. Last time I turned onto Front Street, [...]

Magical Light on Fort Beach

On July 3rd 2018, I made my way from the concerts at Crocker Park to this spot along Front Street just in time to capture magical light on Fort Beach. This is the fourth image from that night that I have shared with each one being a bit different with a change in composition, cloud shape and light.

Top 10 of 2018 – #4 Sunset Sky over Fort Beach

Merry Christmas everyone! Today we continue with the top 10 of 2018 countdown and this image of an incredible sunset sky over Fort Beach. I remember that I was at Crocker Park on the night of July 3rd enjoying music with friends when these clouds passed overhead and the sun dipped lower in the sky. It seemed as though the sunset might offer great opportunities so I excused myself and headed down to Front Street. I lucked out with the location of this monstrous cloud and was able to use the water of Fort Beach to reflect the brilliant sunset [...]
