Marblehead Christmas Walk

The Marblehead Christmas Walk is this weekend and I thought I would share this image of Glover's Regiment walking down State Street at the conclusion of the 2011 parade to spread the word.  If you are new in town or haven't participated in the Marblehead Christmas Walk festivities, make sure you head to historical downtown this weekend. This year marks the 46th version of the annual event sponsored by the business community.  Tonight, there will be a Tree Lighting at the National Grand Bank lot from 6-7pm as well as a lobster trap tree lighting in front of Mud Puddle [...]

Hooper at Dawn

On an early October morning, I met up with my friend Steve Clay at St. Michael's Church and the two of us successfully ascended to the top of the building's new steeple.  This was my third trip up to this spot overlooking historic downtown Marblehead and I was treated to great colors and a prefect sunrise.  I shared the sunrise view shortly after taking it but haven't had a chance to show any other images yet. During my very first ascent to this spot (on the scaffolding erected at the time), I found this composition of Hooper Street and its [...]

Last Light on Old Town House

Today's image of Old Town House reflecting the last light of sunset comes from an outing on June 23rd.  I had gone out that day to try again for a shot of State Street at sunset (an attempt the night before proved fruitless) and was rewarded for my efforts with a brilliant sunset display in historic downtown Marblehead.  As I made my way back to my car parked on Washington Street, I spotted the pink glow of sunset reflecting in the windows of Old Town House.  It only took a moment to get the camera set up again before the [...]

Old Town House

The Old Town House was built in 1727 and served as the original town hall for the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts.  The building is constructed in a Georgian style and was designed by the architect Nathan Bowen.  The yellow building with its wood clapboard siding on a granite foundation stands in the middle of Washington Street with traffic circling around it. History of the Old Town House   Though the main floor was originally used as the town hall, it's lower level was used as a market initially.  When Abbot Hall was constructed in 1876, it assumed the role of town [...]

Old Town House Bathed in Gold

The Marblehead Festival of Arts is upon us and two of my prints are hanging up at the Old Town House this weekend.  I was honored to receive an Honorable Mention award for 'Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall'.  As in years past, the public gets to vote of their favorite image which is then awarded the Peoples Choice Award.  I would greatly appreciate your vote if you make it through the photography exhibit on Friday (2-7pm), Saturday (10-5pm) or Sunday (12-5pm). Today's image comes from that same sunset and incredible light show of last Thursday night.  In fact, this was [...]

State Street at Sunset

Five years ago, I captured an incredible sunset from this exact spot on State Street.  The sky exploded in bright pink colors that bathed the classic houses on this street and made the entire street come to life.  Ever since then, I've tried to recreate that image with varying levels of success. On Wednesday night, I headed out in hopes of capturing one of the many great sunsets that had been taking place in town over the past few weeks.  As luck would have it, clouds ended up blocking much of the sunlight and I ended up packing up without [...]

Marblehead – A Model New England Town

In late November 2014, as Abbot Hall tower was nearing the end of its much needed repairs, I was invited atop the scaffolding to help document the work that was taking place.  With a perfect vantage point from which to capture images of historic downtown and the harbor, I couldn't help but shoot the nearly endless compositions that presented themselves. For this shot, I decided to have a bit of fun with it and introduce a selective focus (much like one would get with a tilt-shift lens).  The result accentuates the effect of shooting from above and transforms Marblehead into [...]

A Blanket of Snow in Historic Downtown Marblehead

After a week of sun and warm temperatures in the Turks and Caicos, my family and I returned to the tail end of a beautiful snowfall and near blizzard conditions yesterday.  While the snow from Friday was the perfect consistency to stick to trees and the sunset that followed was amazing, I was several thousand feet up in the air while all that took place.  Yesterday's fluffy snow blew too hard and the light never materialized for an outing. Instead, I turned to the archive and realized that this image was taken exactly three years ago - February 9, 2013.  Another [...]

From the Rooftops – Pleasant Street at Dawn

Can you tell that I enjoyed my time atop St. Michael's steeple?  This is another image from New Years day and came as the light picked up a bit in the morning sky.  I composed the image of Pleasant street at dawn to showcase Grace Community Church as well as the stores in historic downtown Marblehead.  The addition of lights in some of the store windows add a warm glow to the final scene.

Top 10 of 2015 – Leave a Light On at Mud Puddle

I usually like to wait a little while after taking and sharing an image to decide if it has 'legs' and will remain a favorite for years to come.  In the case of this image of Mud Puddle Toys and the corner of Pleasant and Washington Streets, I knew the moment I clicked the shutter. The response to the image was overwhelming and confirmed my early feelings.    Here is #10 in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown.
