Top 10 of 2017 – #10 – Cloudy with a Chance of Moonrise

As we start the Top 10 of 2017 countdown that will lead us into the New Years Day slideshow, we begin with a crowd favorite and the sole moonrise image of the top 10.  I was able to choose my top 9 this year fairly easily but struggled with the final four options for the final spot.  I decided to put the decision up for a vote on my Facebook and Instagram pages and this image was the clear winner. I captured this image on December 3rd, 2017 when I ventured out hoping to capture a moonrise despite the cloudy [...]

Cloudy with a Chance of Moonrise

For the second night in a row, I headed out hoping to capture the full moon.  Last night offered the better timing of the nearly full moon but, as luck would have it, dense clouds spoiled any view of the moon.  I returned to the same spot tonight and set up with two cameras as I test out the Sony a7rII eyeing a possible switch from the Canon system I have been using for the past 12 years. I set up both cameras with the longest lenses I had and composed this image only to then sit and wait and [...]

Lightning Strikes Twice in Marblehead

In mid-September, an active lightning storm passed over Marblehead shortly after sunset.  I had setup my longest lens inside the car due to the frequent bolts of lightning shining in the night sky and aimed at Chandler Hovey Park hoping for the best while mashing on the shutter button (well, the remote button to minimize shake...). As it happened, I lucked out and caught not one but two separate bolts.  I shared the second capture as soon as I came home but this was the first bolt that appeared on my screen.  The exposure on this one was a bit [...]

Sunrise Glow over Marblehead Neck

A few minutes after yesterday's image of a perfect dawn in Marblehead, the first hint of sunrise glow began to form over Marblehead neck.  I made a slight adjustment to the composition and settings and captured the light as it built to its maximum. As it turns out, the sun never actually showed after this moment.  The clouds thickened and this light was quickly extinguished with the light of the sun hidden behind the building cloud cover.  The twenty minute span between the first light of dawn and this peak sunrise glow made the trip to Crocker Park incredibly productive [...]

Marblehead Harbor Dawn

Between yesterday's capture and this one, twenty minutes elapsed.  During that time, I had decided to set up Facebook Live on my iPhone so others could enjoy what I hoped would be a beautiful sunrise.  As the sun approached the horizon, the sky absolutely exploded in color.  I shot frame after frame and kept adjusting the composition until this moment when the light peaked. An incredible mix of pinks and purples lit up the sky on this Marblehead Harbor dawn.  I loved how the boats in the harbor all seemed to be pointing toward Marblehead Light with its green beacon [...]

A New Day Dawns in Marblehead

I hadn't been out to shoot the dawn in a month and so, when I woke at 6am on Saturday morning, I decided to head out the door and see if luck might follow me to Crocker Park.  I had quickly checked the location of the rising sun and decided that Crocker offered the potential for some nice side light to illuminate the boats still moored in the harbor.  I lucked out with a parking spot along Front Street and walked up to the park. I arrived to find still waters and some nice orange light beginning to show to [...]

Moored by Moonlight under the Harvest Moon

Long after the Harvest Moon rose, I stayed along Front Street and watched the moonlight grow brighter and move directly over Marblehead Light.  The boats moored in the harbor were lined up perfectly from this spot and seemed to be bathed in golden moonlight emanating from the lighthouse itself as I chose to compose this image without the moon - focusing instead on its light reflected on the water. As a bonus, the green beacon shone from atop the lighthouse and a gentle breeze lifted the flag which also seemed to grab a bit of moonlight to shine in the [...]

Expecting the Harvest Moon at Lovis Cove

I didn't have high hopes for tonight's Harvest Moon and am very glad that my expectations were proven very, very wrong.  I had scouted out the projected rise of the full moon and decided to shoot from Lovis Cove but had found little motivation as 5:30pm rolled around and I lay on our newly delivered (and far too comfortable couch).  With an effort of will, I gathered my bag, tripod and was out the door. I showed up 15 minutes early and set up near the Barnacle where I was surprised (and flattered) to meet three fans/followers in a span [...]

Lightning Strikes Marblehead Light

So the title above 'lightning strikes Marblehead Light' may be a bit of creative license but when I saw this bolt and the image on the back of my camera's monitor, I just about lost my mind.  A bit about the shot: What an incredible lightning storm we just had pass through town!  I saw the sky darken as we finished dinner and ran out the door when I saw the radar image of the storm.  I quickly decided that Front Street offered me the best view and wondered if I might get a lucky shot of a lightning strike [...]

Catching the Sunset at Chandler Hovey Park

As the sun set on September 10th, I quickly flew my drone back from its spot over the green buoy at the mouth of the harbor to Chandler Hovey Park.  I returned just in time to angle the camera toward the familiar landmark of Marblehead Light and lucked out with a slight gust of wind that set the flag flying in the air. It wasn't until I returned home that I discovered the best part of the image - silhouettes of people enjoying and catching the sunset themselves.  As you look around the scene, you'll find a number of silhouettes [...]
