The Beach on Cove Lane

I've visited the beach on Cove Lane many times since first wandering down this public way on Marblehead Neck. Today's image comes from almost exactly three years ago when I made my way onto the Neck near sunset and found the beach deserted and with calm waters. The lone boat and hint of fog made for a very calm mood that night which hopefully carries forward in the final shot.

Paddle before Moonrise

Last week, I had gone out to Fountain Park to capture the full moon rising over Fort Sewall and the homes along Little Harbor. As I waited for the sun to set, I noted a soft glow on the houses facing the harbor and then saw a small motor boat and a kayak enter the frame. I captured this shot just as both were crossing over the light reflecting in the still waters. It's funny how different this image appears from the moonrise of last week with a nearly identical composition but with a change in light and focus for [...]

Dawns Early Light

The morning of April 24th proved to be one of the most beautiful and longest lasting dawns/sunrises I have experienced in Marblehead. The light show began at 5:30am and, within minutes, I witnessed orange, pink and purple light paints the sky and Marblehead Harbor in dawns early light.  The light quickly changed and strengthened as I stood watch at the end of Ferry Lane (near the Landing). If you look closely, you can see that Marblehead Light's green beacon is shining against the orange backdrop. Thanks again to all who voted yesterday and helped me narrow down my selections for the [...]

Dawn of a Spring Day

I can't remember the last time I went out to capture the sunrise and this spring has not been very welcoming to early morning outings. This morning, everything seemed to fall into place and I decided to head out early to capture the dawn of a spring day. As I drove towards downtown, the sky showed its earliest hints of color. I arrived at the Landing and saw the light had built up further with plenty of time to go before sunrise.  I started off shooting from shore but then made my way to one of the floats already out [...]

Oceanside at Front Street

That was an incredible storm with the power to uproot enormous trees and cause major infrastructure issues with lost power and damage along the coast. In the aftermath of the storm, there was beauty to be found in the raw power of the ocean and I set out before the noon high tide to capture scenes around Marblehead. I began the day shooting waves exploding behind and above the lamp posts along the causeway then made my way to Hammond Park, the Landing, Front Street before exploring Greystone and finally Surf Street. By the time I returned home, I had [...]

New Years Supermoon

I have been looking forward to the New Years Supermoon for two weeks now and kept hoping the predictions for clear skies would hold.  I had everything I needed to capture the first moonrise of 2018 - new camera and a longer lens - that could offer me reach I never had before and the dynamic range to balance the brightness of the moon against Marblehead Light. As it happened, the perfect vantage point for the moonrise fell right in the backyard of my Wednesdays in Marblehead book designer. I sent her an email a few days back to see [...]

Beacon in the Smoke

With temperatures stuck below freezing and another sunrise at single digits, I couldn't pass up the chance to try out my new camera and lens.  I had just received the Sony 100-400mm lens in the mail the night before and had been hoping for continued cold to shoot more scenes of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor. When I woke and looked out at the cloud cover, I knew the conditions were right for an amazing dawn but also had to get ready for work.  I watched the light explode this morning while getting ready but was able to finish in [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #6 Lightning Strikes Marblehead Light

Would you believe this is one of two shots of lightning in the top 10? Today's image was taken on September 14, 2017 at 7:27pm when a fast moving storm went through town.  With the frequent bursts of lightning and the proximity of them, I didn't feel safe shooting in the open and so I set up my tripod on the passenger seat of the car with the window open hoping that lightning would strike near Marblehead Light.  My luck held out and I came away with my fifth favorite image of the year. My original thoughts on this image: [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #8 Fireworks over Marblehead Harbor

Marblehead's Annual Fireworks display became an instant favorite and 'must shoot' event when we moved to Marblehead in 2008.  Since then, I've shot the fireworks from various angles and locations.  I had an idea for capturing this year's show from the air but my night clearance from the FAA took longer than anticipated.  Instead, I headed out the Pleon Yacht Club and fount a perfect spot from which to capture our show, the Beverly one in the distance as well as our lighthouse lit up for the night. Another shot from this night became much more of a favorite but [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #9 A New Day Dawns in Marblehead

My 9th favorite photo taken in 2017 is this one of purple light and a perfect green reflection as a new day dawns in Marblehead.  This image was captured on October 7th, 2017 at 6:24am during what would end up as a very long boating season in Marblehead.  The warm summer with only one heat wave morphed into a warm and very pleasant fall.  I was thankful for the warm conditions as sunrises began to take place later and even more so for the nearly filled harbor as I saw the light developing on this morning. With the still conditions, [...]
