A Sailing Town at Sunset

Marblehead has been called many things but it is most certainly a sailing town and all its residents know of the old refrain - Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight.  On a late September evening, I was treated to an incredible sunset from my spot on Corinthian Lane.  The colors built from an initially foggy yellow to orange then purple and finally this red sky at night.  It wasn't until 20 minutes after the sun set that the colors in the sky began to fade and I packed up for the night. Hope you enjoy this view of our sailing [...]

Sunset over Inner Marblehead Harbor

As I waited for the moon to rise on Saturday night, I was treated to an unexpected sunset over inner Marblehead harbor.  I had only checked weather and cloud forecasts as far as the moonrise was concerned and hadn't expected anything as beautiful as this sunset which spanned the inner harbor and causeway. I'm not sure if 'inner Marblehead harbor' is the right term for this area but was at a loss if a better nautical term existed. There were just enough boats moored in the harbor to add a needed element that broke up the water while also showing [...]

Corinthian Yacht Club on a late Summer Evening

The Corinthian Yacht Club was organized over 130 years ago and stands along Corinthian Lane as the Neck curves into Marblehead Harbor.  On the evening of September 20, I had gone out to capture the late Summer fog that had rolled into the harbor and decided on shooting from Corinthian Lane (and the shores below) in what would turn out to be a perfect spot to capture an incredible sunset. Before the sun set, the subtle fog in the harbor served to soften the evening light and set a nice glow on the facade of the Corinthian Yacht Club.  While [...]

Sunset Colors can Change in a Minute (or Five)

One of the good (or bad) results of a successful outing in Marblehead is coming back with far more than one image to share.  Especially in the Summer, sunset colors can change in a minute (or five) and result in very different images despite similar compositions. Such was the case on July 18.  I had made my way to a favorite spot on Parker Lane for what turned out to be a beautiful sunset and immediately shared a panorama view that took in the entirety of the harbor from my vantage point as well as clouds overhead reflecting the colors [...]

Night on the Neck

Phew!  If you've been wondering why my posts tapered off and became non-existent in the past week, it was because I was studying during any free time I had for my Boards exam.  Every 10 years, physicians need to 'certify' (their words) that we are staying up to date on the practice of medicine by sitting for an examination.  In my case, the American Board of Allergy and Immunology put together 200 questions to be answered in a span of 4 hours covering the full breadth of what I do day in and day out.  I took the opportunity to listen [...]

Fire in the Sky

Tonight, I was fortunate to capture one of the most incredible displays of color and light as a fire in the sky marked one of the last sunsets of this Summer in Marblehead.  I had missed out on last night's sunset and was jealous of the shots populating my Facebook and Instagram feeds.  As sunset approached and the air picked up humidity, I decided to head out hoping for a decent showing. I drove across the causeway and stopped along Foster Street to assess the position of the sun in the sky.  From there, I headed over to Corinthian Lane and [...]

Sunset Glow over Marblehead Harbor

The soft glow of sunset bathes boats moored in Marblehead Harbor.  Image taken on August 27th and is the third image I've shared from this beautiful Summer sunset. *Photos will continue but descriptions may be sparse until Sept 28 as I am studying for the Allergy and Immunology Board exam which we need to take every 10 years

Last Rays of Light over Marblehead Harbor

Today's image comes from the end of August and a trip to the float at the end of the Pleon Yacht Club's pier.  I had gone out in hopes of nice sunset colors as a mild storm developed after what had been an unusually dry and warm Summer.  As the waters of Marblehead harbor were relatively calm, I tried my hand at shooting from water level and getting this unique view of boats moored in the harbor. As the sun dipped lower in the horizon, I composed this image to capture the last rays of light over Marblehead Harbor with [...]

Sunset at Parker Lane

We were having a fairly quiet Saturday night and had little to eat in the house so orders were called in to Junji for sushi and Marblehead House of Pizza for a small pie.  As I looked at the sky starting to pick up the first colors of sunset, I quickly volunteered to pick up the food and knew just the spot to spend the 15-20 minute wait while the food was prepared. Parker Lane is the first public way on Marblehead Neck as you cross the causeway and has become a go-to spot on many evenings.  I pulled up [...]

Last Light on Ram’s Island

This seemed like the perfect photo to end the week.  On July 23rd, I headed out at sunset to Preston Beach chasing a storm and wound up capturing an incredible pink sky with lightning bolts in front of rainbows (that sounds made up but it wasn't). Before any of that happened, I was treated to some interesting cloud formations and incredibly calm waters.  As the sun dipped lower in the sky, it lit up the horizon in a purple hue and the last light of the day cast a golden glow over Ram's Island.  I used a long exposure (3.2 [...]
