Light Up the Trees

So as luck would have it, this image was waiting in line next to yesterday's image of the lifeguard chair on an empty beach.  I went back to view all images taken on this day and remembered there was a "smoky sou'wester" that explained this phenomenon.  I had never heard the term until a gentleman floating in the waters of Doliber Cove shared it with me. Anyway, this image of a flag planted near a small grave marker at Old Burial Hill came from a walk around Marblehead exploring the foggy conditions.  The angle of the sun and fog served [...]

Fog and Shadows at Old Burial Hill

Back to the days of fog in mid-July for this image of Old Burial Hill.  I had started photographing scenes of dense fog resulting from a Smoky Sou'Wester on Beacon Street at Grace Oliver beach and then walked from there until I ended up at Old Burial Hill and, later, Redd's Pond. As I made my way around gravestones in the old cemetery, I noticed the way the light broke through the trees with the fog accentuating the contrast of light and shadows.  I stopped at this point and switched to a vertical orientation to capture the fog and shadows at [...]

Peak Fall Colors at Green Street Cemetery

There is a great maple tree at the corner of Elm and Creesy Streets which I photographed last year and shared at Halloween.  As I drove around town this weekend looking for early signs of Fall, I spotted this tree at peak Fall colors and decided to look for a new composition.  Rather than including the gravestone I had previously focused on, I chose this one that reads Benj. Lindsey.  There are other names as well - Hannah and Nathaniel.  I was unable to find much information about the individuals buried here and will see if anyone can add to [...]

Foggy Morning at Star of the Sea Cemetery

Last week, I shared another black and white image taken at Star of the Sea cemetery on this foggy morning in late May.  I mentioned then that the trees are what drew my eye and, in this image, I decided to use the dirt road to bring the viewer's eye directly to the trunk of the great tree and then beyond it to the bend and fog beyond.  Again the decision to process this in black and white was an easy one given the textures of the tree and gravestones.

The Great Tree at Star of the Sea Cemetery

Every morning, I drive down Lafayette Street and marvel at the great trees the line the center of Star of the Sea Cemetery.  This year, the trees seem particularly healthy owing to the snow melt from Winter and the gradual warmup of Spring.  As such, I had been determined to photograph them but decided that I needed a foggy day to capture them the way I wanted. On this Thursday morning, we had a thick fog roll in and I thought the conditions might just work.  I headed to work a bit early and stopped at the Star of the [...]

The Tombstone Under the Cherry Blossoms

Yesterday, I shared the first image from these incredible cherry trees at the Harris Street Cemetery.  Today, I'll share the last image taken on Sunday as I headed back to my car. I had come across this particle tombstone before and found the inscription fascinating.  As the sun had climbed up in the sky, I was able to get some great light coming off the face of the tombstone.  I chose a wide open aperture to push the beautiful colors of the cherry blossoms into a bit of a blur in the background. In case you cannot make out the [...]

Eternal Flame at Waterside Cemetery

This is a photo I took last year while exploring Waterside Cemetery on Memorial Day.  I posted two other images from that day last year but revisited the archive and found this image of the eternal flame.  I hadn't shot flames in daylight before and found that it took a lot of trial and error to get the flame 'just right'.  If you look at this image in large size, you'll notice one hint of flame that escaped from the larger fire emanating from the torch in the remembrance pool.

Mother under the Maple Tree

This is the perfect ending to Halloween week on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I was biking around town in search of foliage when I spotted this maple outside the cemetery on the corner of Elm and Creesy Streets.  I couldn't find the right angle to shoot it from outside the cemetery so I ventured inside.  Once there, I found a few gravestones that would make for a nice foreground but the light wasn't quite right.  Then the clouds shifted and the light illuminated the singular word 'Mother' on the one gravestone standing apart from the rest.  I dropped to the ground [...]

A Purple Sky over Old Burial Hill

June 20th turned out to be an incredible productive day.  It started on Beacon Street shooting the 'Marblehead or the Real World' sign and then progressed to a sunset shot of Gerry Island.  On my way home, I somehow found myself at the base of Old Burial Hill and figured I would wander up as the light faded in the sky.  I found this tree surrounded by gravestones and set up to photograph it.  Just then, the sky took on an incredible purple hue that grew stronger and stronger.  It just goes to show that the sky can continue to [...]
