Fall in Marblehead – The Pond off Whittier Road

When you think of perfect Fall scenes, a few elements come to mind - peak foliage on the trees, water to reflect those perfect Fall hues, blue skies with a hint of clouds, maybe a bench to sit on and take in the view....oh and a fountain...definitely a fountain! I tried to capture an image of this pond last year but missed the peak Fall colors that year and ended up with a drab scene lacking most of the above elements.  On this particular morning (Wednesday, October 23rd), I arrived here at 11am after capturing the colors at Tedesco Country [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Fallen Leaves on the Path to Ware Pond

The next stop on this outing to capture peak Fall colors in Marblehead from Wednesday, October 23rd was Ware Pond.  I hadn't visited Ware Pond since last Fall and found that I had missed the peak of Fall colors in the trees that line the pond.  I decided to walk around to the rail trail and see what the path that leads to the waters edge might offer.  I arrived at this spot at a little after 10am and the sun was offering great dappled light through the trees and happened to be highlighting this collection of fallen leaves. The [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Perfect Morning for Golf at Tedesco Country Club

On Wednesday, October 23rd, the Town of Marblehead seemed primed to display peak Fall foliage colors.  I had been scouting locations for two weeks and the conditions seemed perfect on this Fall morning to venture out and capture them all.  I plan on sharing images this week taken from this single day and showcasing five very different Fall views of Marblehead. Tedesco Country Club was my first stop on this particular morning.  I had been watching a few trees that line the first hole and noticed their color gradually changing and brightening over the week.  I arrived on Salem Street [...]

Changing Colors at Crocker Park

I mentioned over the Summer that I happened upon a new composition including this tree's canopy and Abbot Hall one morning when I was out on a sunrise shoot.  As others commented at the time, the scene would lend itself well to a Fall shoot with changing colors in the leaves. In early October, I headed out to Crocker Park with this scene in mind.  The tree had started to change its colors for the Fall and several had already made their way down to the ground.  I decided to change the composition just a bit so that the swing [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Waterside Cemetery

Last night I had a bit of writer's block (or whatever the equivalent is called).  I sat in front of my computer scrolling through the 383 images of Marblehead that are in my 'to be posted' folder and just could not decide on a theme, let alone an image.  I put the question up on my FB page and the first five responses were for: sun, fog, foliage, ocean, architectural detail.  Given the time of year, I opted to go with foliage and found this image with some fog and (it's a stretch) architectural detail in the form of the [...]

Turning Leaves at Herreshoff Castle

I was out yesterday looking for signs of Fall on a crisp cool day and found myself at Crocker Park at one point.  As I walked up the road leading to the park, I passed Herreshoff Castle on my right.  I have tried to figure out a unique composition for this castle in Marblehead but failed until I spotted the leaves changing color along the entryway.  I positioned the camera fairly close to the ground so that you could just make out the front door with its large knocker as you looked beyond the red leaves.  The sky cooperated well [...]

Gatchell Playground and the Maple Tree

The Maple tree at the Gatchell playground is a lot like that Charlie Brown tree.  It's sad, probably dying but it's also one of the first trees in town to change colors and always seems like it might surprise you and really 'pop' one of these years. Last year was a pretty sad display and I photographed the tree by using a puddle to help keep focus on the lower half.  This year, I actually visited twice as the color was surprisingly good with most of the tree turning at the same time and very little leaf drop right off [...]

Reflections of Fall Colors in Marblehead

Fall seems to be coming early this year with trees turning easily two weeks sooner than they did last year.  I had started to notice the maples around town showing off their bright red colors and decided to drive around town on Saturday to see if I could find any to photograph. As I drove up Washington Street and passed Abbot Hall on my right, I saw a flash of red in my peripheral vision.  I quickly made the right to circle around and found this tree on the grounds of Abbot Hall at peak color.  The problem was finding [...]

Fall Wreath on a Blue Door

This image came from the Photo Walk that took place in October and during which I did a bit of experimentation.  I don't recall exactly where I was when I walked by this blue door but the simple composition of the wreath and the great complement of colors - oranges, blue and brown - made me stop and stare.  This was a quick shot and the wide open aperture helped nail the focus on the wreath's details and keep the texture of the door from distracting.

Fall Colors at the Bud Orne Playground

Here's a more recent image taken as the colors peaked around town.  I had noticed this great tree and its bright orange leaves one day as my son played flag football.  I wasn't able to photograph it at the time as the playground was wildly busy and decided to come by the next morning.  I found the place empty as if waiting in anticipation when I arrived.  While the trees had started to lose color at the top, they still had some nice leaves to serve as a backdrop to this great playground.
