Smoke in the Harbor

As the sun rose on Sunday, February 14, I made my way across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck to capture images of the still present sea smoke inside Marblehead Harbor.  Despite the sun, the air temperature remained below zero and the smoke kept rising from the water.  Unfortunately, the wind had shifted slightly and was blowing straight at me. I drove into the lot at Chandler Hovey park only to quickly turn around having not seen any photographic opportunities.  I made my way down to the causeway and spotted these two working boats moored near shore.  I had to [...]

Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

Sunday's arctic air resulted in a display of sea smoke the likes of which I had never seen before in Marblehead.  The display kept me busy capturing various compositions as the wind and light changed to drastically alter the scene before me. On Monday, I shared a wide view of the sun just rising over the cloud of sea smoke and setting a nearby patch aglow.  Exactly five minutes after that scene, this one appeared. The sun had risen enough to clear the smoke at the horizon and it created the most incredible backlighting for the tendrils of sea smoke forming [...]

Lighting up the Sea Smoke

This morning I was fortunate to witness and capture the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor.  I started shooting at 6:30am and clicked the shutter for the last time at 8:00am.  During that time, I took more than 100 images and, only after coffee and a hot shower, did I finally go through them to find and process my favorites.  I shared one image already but found that I had 13 favorite images of sea smoke from this morning and really wanted to show one wide view as well. The relatively warm ocean was producing copious amounts [...]

Taking the Launch

With warm images predicted for next week and little snow left on the ground, I thought it might be fun to look ahead to Summer. In early August, I had headed down to Marblehead Harbor on a picture perfect day to capture the view of a harbor filled with boats and clouds overhead.  Hammond Park seemed to be the perfect spot for this view but, as soon as I arrived, I realized the foreground was missing something. Only a few minutes later, a launch from the Marblehead Yacht Club came into the frame and I captured this view of someone [...]

Sea Smoke on Marblehead Neck

Here is another image from my dawn outing to capture sea smoke in Marblehead harbor.  I shared a close up view of the lighthouse surrounded by the incredible image of sea smoke rising from the water last week.  As the sun rose (and my time ran short - I had to be at work by 7:30am), I made my way towards the car with regular looks across the water. At 7:23am when this image was taken, the sun had finally risen in the morning sky to illuminate the clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly composed this shot to include the [...]

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor

Before taking this image in January 2013, I had seen frostbite sailing take place in Marblehead Harbor but hadn't truly appreciate the name of this Winter activity. On this day, with a cold fog enveloping Marblehead and the boats crossing in front of Abbot Hall in an otherwise empty harbor, I could finally grasp just how cold the sailors must be.

Morning Light in the Windshield

In early Spring and late Fall, the working boats of Marblehead Harbor tend to gravitate toward this section near the causeway offering protection from the elements.  On this day in May 2012, I had gone out at 5am in hopes of capturing a good sunrise but the thick clouds you see overhead snuffed out any good light. As the sun rose in the sky, the dynamic range grew too wide to capture both the sun and any detail in the boats or houses on Marblehead Neck.  I therefore changed the composition to focus on the boats - especially when I [...]

Last Light on Marblehead Light

I've captured many images of Marblehead Light around sunset (both before after its green light turns on) and yet I had never captured the reflection of sunset's last light in the glass of the lighthouse before.  I was able to 'reach' closer to the lighthouse through the use of a borrowed zoom lens and the soft light of sunset reflecting in the glass coupled with the very full harbor made for a picture perfect image of Marblehead on a late September day.

Remembering a Full Harbor and Foggy Summer Days

As the days get shorter, the weather cooler and Marblehead harbor begins to empty, I can't help but bring out a photo from a foggy Summer day in 2012.  I had gone out on this fog filled day hoping to capture images of boats in Marblehead harbor surrounded by the atmospheric fog.  I had envisioned shots of boats with the thick fog serving to hide any signs of houses across the shore. What I found when I arrived on Marblehead Neck was a more perfect scene than I imagined.  The houses across the shore had indeed disappeared in the fog but Abbot [...]

Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

What better image to follow yesterday's rain cloud than this beautiful rainbow which formed over Marblehead Harbor on a late July evening.  I've captured rainbows from many locations throughout Marblehead but have always hoped for a large one over a full harbor.  The location of this rainbow was absolutely perfect incorporating Marblehead Light in the final scene.
