Marblehead Harbor

No Vacancies in Marblehead Harbor

Well, it's over...Summer has officially ended.  I thought I would post this image captured on the morning of August 29 (taken 30 minutes after Monday's image) to commemorate the end of a picture perfect Summer in Marblehead.  We couldn't have asked for better weather to make up for the historic cold and record setting snow of Winter. I figured that an image of Marblehead Harbor filled to capacity and lit by the golden glow of sunrise would make for an appropriate End of Summer image.  Here's to a great Autumn.

Light at the End of the Rainbow

This is the fifth image shared from an outing on Tuesday, August 4th.  I've already shared images of lightning and a sunset shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and have another image coming up on Thursday as well.  It's no wonder that the site grew quickly from a weekly post to daily ones... On this day, storms kept passing through Marblehead including one at 4:30pm.  With the intensity of rain and clearing skies behind it, I thought there might be a chance for a rainbow (though the sun wasn't quite low enough in the sky yet).  I quickly got in [...]

Boats in the Harbor

On Tuesday, August 4th, I headed out at sunset with the hope of nice clouds and good color.  As I drove across the causeway, I thought the clouds offered the best photo opportunity from Parker Lane - one of the public ways on Marblehead Neck.  I pulled in and found the tide to be quite low as I descended to the small beach. For the first time, I noted that there was a rock formation at the water's edge that would allow me a closer view of the boats filling Marblehead harbor at this time of year.  I carefully climbed [...]

Jumping for Rainbows

On Monday, July 27, a storm cloud passed over Marblehead a little after 6pm.  Given the timing of the rain and the direction it was headed, I figured there was a pretty good chance for capturing a rainbow over Marblehead Harbor.  I quickly decided on Crocker Park as my destination and packed up the car. Once I reached Crocker Park, I headed across to the railing overlooking the harbor and saw the rainbow illuminated directly over Marblehead Neck.  I also spotted a few kids down at the float and headed down the walkway with this image in mind.  The tide [...]

The Storm Cloud

On Friday, July 24th, my family and I were driving back into Marblehead from dinner in Beverly where we had barely escaped heavy rains.  As we drove down Lafayette Street, I spotted an enormous rainbow taking shape over Salem Harbor and received permission to pull over and capture it (I had luckily put the camera bag and tripod in the trunk just in case).  With sunset fast approaching and fearing little time to capture any other great clouds over Marblehead Harbor, I convinced my wife and kids to join me on a quick photo shoot. When I turned onto Front [...]

Purple Bolt of Lightning over Marblehead Harbor

On August 4th, a procession of thunder storms developed around Marblehead.  I had headed out to Chandler Hovey park for the first one and found incredible light that kept me busy but was disappointed by the few bolts of lightning.  When the winds shifted threatening to bring the storm closer to Marblehead, I ducked into the car and pulled up the radar.  I saw an even bigger storm with purple dots mixed in with the deep red core and thought I would have another chance to catch a bolt of lightning over Marblehead Harbor. I set up at the base [...]

Marblehead Junior Race Week Begins

Today marks the start of Marblehead Junior Race Week.  Young sailors from the Pleon Yacht Club as well as those from the Boston, Corinthian, Eastern and Manchester clubs will compete in races using a variety of boats in the waters off Marblehead. If you have a chance, head over to Marblehead Neck and watch these sailors compete from today through Wednesday.

Windows to the Harbor

Sunday, June 21st was Fathers Day and, after spending the day with my wife and two kids, I decided to treat myself to a photo shoot.  I had a particular spot in mind for that day - though you'll have to wait until Wednesday to see it. As I explored this part of Marblehead Neck, I wandered down to the edge of Nahant Street.  I've photographed this area on a few occasions previously but on this day, the tide was perfect for using the rocky outcropping as a frame.  I composed the image to also include the Corinthian Yacht Club [...]

Golden Light on an Empty Harbor

In late April, I had gone out to shoot an oncoming storm and was surprised by the incredible golden light that bathed Marblehead Neck for a few minutes before being swallowed by clouds.  That golden light was made even more beautiful against the deep blues of the storm clouds.  Without any boats in this part of the harbor, the water served to reflect the color of the sky and was only interrupted by the scattered buoys in the empty harbor. I'm reminded every so often that what has helped keep my Wednesdays in Marblehead project going is as much as the [...]

Walking the Plank to Marblehead Harbor

Yet another shot from a great Tuesday in early-June.  I had captured rainbows at Chandler Hovey Park and then drove off as rain approached only to double back and shoot at Parker Lane for a while.  When the clouds moved, I did as well ending up on Foster Street in front of the Eastern Yacht Club. I started off capturing a shot of the long pier at the Eastern Yacht Club as the sunset light began to fade.  After that, I walked down the pier and to the plank that led down to floats where dinghies are attached.  I didn't have [...]
