Marblehead Harbor

Wednesday Night is for…Racing

After 36 years, Wednesday Evening Races have cemented themselves as a staple of summer in Marblehead.  From mid-May to late-September, boats of various classes compete in races held just outside the harbor.  We were fortunate to be on the water as the groups headed toward the start line.  I caught this set of boats in open water.  Below you can see another group crossing in front of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  Unfortunately, the races were cancelled that night due to lack of wind.  I'll have to find my way out there again to capture these boats doing what [...]

Floating

Continuing on the sailing trip, we left the safety of the Marblehead harbor and ventured out in search of wind (there wasn't any) and happened upon this vessel.  The light on the subtle waves was making for some incredible designs and I sought to shoot an abstract of the water leading to the single sailboat along the island.

Out for a Sail

Last Wednesday, we were invited out for an evening sail by some good friends.  While I spent half the time shooting my wife, kids and surrogate parents/grandparents on the boat, I didn't miss the chance to photograph our town from the water.  After all, this is a sailing town!  This was an early shot from the sail when we passed what I presume is a charter from the Corinthian Yacht Club that seems to have stopped to admire the view of Chandler Hovey park and the lighthouse.  I loved the positioning of their boat just off to the side and [...]

Cliff Jumping at Crocker Park

It was hot the first week in July and, as I made my way around town on a Wednesday, I figured I would shoot some kids diving off the floating dock at Crocker park.  I made my way down there but saw little to shoot until I turned around saw a group that was taking advantage of the high tide by diving off the cliff.  I climbed back up the stairs, introduced myself, and proceeded to shoot as they jumped in one after another.  This was my favorite shot of the series - a single jumper caught in mid stride [...]

Dawn of a New Day

I really wanted to shoot a sunrise but just could not fathom the 4am wakeup that would be required.  That is until I woke last Wednesday at exactly 4am without an alarm clock and figured it must be a sign.  I had plotted out the sunrise 'just in case' and realized Hammond Park would offer the best vantage point.  I set up and watched as the dawn broke spreading a purple glow over the harbor filled with boats. This will be the first of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way [...]

The Privateer Lynx comes to town

This week saw the Lynx come to town.  The Lynx is a tall ship inspired by one that fought in the war of 1812.  She came to Marblehead harbor on a foggy Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a throng of spectators watching from Fort Sewall as well as wind and rain.  She fired off six cannon shots as she made her way to the harbor in response to rifle fire from the Marblehead regiment.  This image was taken during one of those shots and puts the tall ship in the context of our iconic lighthouse. Technical: Canon 50D and [...]

Planet Marblehead

A warm shot for this week amidst the too-snowy Winter.  This one was taken in August aboard our old neighbor's sailboat and was a pretty standard shot of the lighthouse until I had the idea to turn it in on itself and create a little planet.  The sailboats and lighthouse lined up perfectly and the sky cooperated nicely for this effect.  It's a unique shot and hopefully brings a bit of warm memories to this cold, wet day.
