Sea Smoke at Sunrise

I was going through images in my 'to be posted' folder to share this week and passed by the series of sea smoke shots captured on a freezing Valentine's Day.  It's hard to believe that this was the scene at sunrise in Marblehead Harbor only 6 weeks ago with temperatures well below zero (even before taking into account the wind chill). I've shared a few images of the sea smoke rising from the ocean but still have many more to show.  As the light changed and the smoke danced across the water, the compositions seemed to be endless.

Sea Smoke Sunrise

With past outings to capture sea smoke, one issue that has come up is that the mist rising from the ocean usually forms a thick band of fog at the horizon blocking any hopes of accompanying sunrise color.  On Sunday, February 14, I arrived at Fort Beach to find the sky turning pink as pillars of sea smoke formed in front of and behind Marblehead Light. I captured several frames before the sun rose above the fog bank but this image of a sea smoke sunrise may be my favorite of them.  You can see the light of the sun [...]

Pillars of Sea Smoke in Marblehead Harbor

This morning's record low temperatures (the coldest Marblehead has been in over a decade) meant that sea smoke was likely to occur.  Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, sea smoke has become one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  While I've taken photos of this incredible phenomenon of steam coming off the relatively hot ocean (with air temperatures of -10F above it), I've never seen a display of sea smoke as occurred this morning. After dressing appropriately for the arctic temperatures (it must have been -20 something with the wind chill), I left the house and made my first stop [...]

Snowy Sunrise at Castle Rock

I've made it a point the last few years to go out on the morning of my birthday to capture the sunrise.  As I was born in mid-February, that means I have a pretty good chance of capturing a snow filled scene.  Such was the case in 2014. On February 19, I headed out with a plan to capture a snowy sunrise at Castle Rock.  It had snowed the night before and I hoped the snow would remain undisturbed for my morning shoot.  I was thrilled to see this blanket of snow at Castle Rock as well as the almost [...]

A Shining Star on New Years Day – First Sunrise of 2016

A photographer friend of mine recently commented that New Years doesn't begin at midnight for us...it starts with the first sunrise.  And so, while most were just waking up to the new year, I headed out in the predawn hours for St. Michael's church and a trip to the top of the steeple.  I had made some plans a few days earlier to meet Steve Clay and Ed Nilsson at the church and capture this first sunrise of 2016 from this unique vantage point. As a quick aside, I had welcomed 2012 with a sunrise shoot atop Old North Church and [...]

Thankful for Five Years of Sharing the Beauty of Marblehead

Each year on Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the support of those who see and interact with my images on my website and various social media locations.  I started Wednesdays in Marblehead in August 2010 as a personal project to learn more about my new town.  I still remember those early days when I would post an image to the website and wonder if anyone would ever see it.  After five years and over 1,000 images shared, I'm humbled that so many have connected with these photos of Marblehead and the beauty to be found in a span of 4.4 [...]

Calm Morning on Fort Beach

Today's image comes from October 18th and an outing at dawn in the hopes of catching some early sea smoke.  The first hard frost of the year seemed to be a good time to catch some sea smoke but the wind and other factors prevented it from forming. Instead, I pointed my lens at the great tree at Fort Sewall and composed this image to capture the feel of a calm morning on Fort Beach.

Sunrise through the Cloudbank

The temperatures on Saturday, October 17 threatened to dip below freezing overnight and I thought there might be a chance of seeing seasmoke in the harbor.  I had to be in Portsmouth for a conference at 8:15am but figured I would have just enough time to capture the sunrise from Front Street. As I drove, the temperature on my car's thermometer displayed a cold 32F on this mid-October day and I remained with high hopes until I reached Front Street.  There was no seasmoke to see though the cold air above warm water did combine to form a nice cloud [...]

The Red Glow of Dawn

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday morning hoping to shoot a unique composition of Abbot Hall, Old North Church and the new St. Michael's steeple lined up in a row.  As I set up for that shot, I kept glancing over my shoulder watching the sky grow brighter and brighter as the red glow of dawn bloomed behind Cormorant Rock. I quickly rotated the tripod and composed this image - luckily the entirety of Cormorant Rock fit within the frame using the 600mm lens.  Though the morning featured a cloudless [...]

Brilliant Sunrise over Cormorant Rock

On August 29, I headed to Chandler Hovey Park before dawn in order to capture the supermoon setting over Abbot Hall.  As it happened, the moon set 30 minutes before sunrise and so I had plenty of time to explore other scenes in the dawn light.  I took a few pictures of Marblehead Bell and Cormorant Rock as the light of the rising sun filled the sky with shades of orange and red. I had actually turned back towards town when the sun finally rose and only noticed it by the strong reflection of light coming off the houses across [...]
