Christmas Walk – This Weekend

The annual Marblehead Christmas Walk takes place this weekend and I will be participating in the Artisans Holiday Marketplace. The Festival of Arts Marketplace will be located at the Hooper Mansion this year due to construction at Abbot Hall. Please come by and visit me at 8 Hooper Street on Saturday 10am to 5pm or Sunday 10am to 4pm. I will have the 2020 Calendar as well as new photo cuffs (both limited to stock on hand - only 35 calendars left!). Also books and prints will be available for that perfect gift for the current or former 'Header'. It [...]

The Redcoats Attack

This weekend is the annual Glover's Regiment encampment and, with it, come reenactments of skirmishes harking back to the days of the Redcoats. I had gone down to Front Street on July 12, 2014 just before noon with my son to witness one such battle. Here, the redcoats attack from the waters of Marblehead harbor as Glover's Regiment fights back from atop Fort Sewall.

Moon over the Regiment

On July 11, 2014, I lucked out when out to capture the full moon with Glover's Regiment having set up for their annual encampment at Fort Sewall. I stood across the way from them and composed this image of the Regiment standing at attention under the light of a full moon. Moments later, they fired several volleys over the harbor which would lead to a favorite image that was shared the next day. This one got relegated to the 'to be published' folder instead.

July Fourth Harbor Illumination

I've said it before but it bears repeating, my favorite part of the annual Independence Day celebration in Marblehead is the July fourth harbor illumination. In 2015, I had set up along Corinthian Lane and captured this 160 megapixel panorama of the entirety of Marblehead harbor lit with flares. The resolution on this image is incredible with 1:1 views showing people at Crocker Park! Hope you have a good spot picked out to celebrate the Fourth of July in Marblehead.

Red and Yellow – The Jackson Cup

This year's Jackson Cup featured great conditions for racing but very difficult ones for photographing. Taking place in the midst of our nearly constant clouds and rain, I was disappointed with the very flat light I had to deal with for much of the race. When the clouds did break and allowed the sunlight to spill through, I made sure to take advantage and, luckily, got some nice grouping of boats at times. In this one, a group of boats with red and yellow sails crosses in front of Abbot Hall and the Boston Yacht Club. The sun peaked at [...]

Tall Enough to Ride

One more from last weekend's carnival, I had set up in front of the Casino ride with a particular shot in mind - a mix of lights and reflections that I hoped to capture. As I was adjusting my settings and composition, I noticed a young girl walking up to the measurement sign checking to see if she was tall enough to ride.  I snapped a few frames as the girl stood tall and her sibling (I think) tried to figure out if she was indeed tall enough for the Casino ride. When I arrived home, this was my favorite [...]

The Midway

This is the image I had hoped to capture when I left the house on Saturday night (the second night of the annual Marblehead carnival). I was disappointed (but not surprised) by the low attendance on Friday night and, as I mentioned in the weekend post, had learned the carnival hadn't even opened on Thursday night due to cold and rain. Finally on Saturday, we had a break in the rain that has plagued Marblehead for some 25 of the past 31 days. With the break in the rain, the crowds were far more impressive on Saturday night and I [...]

Last Night at the Carnival

After a rain delay, the annual Marblehead High School carnival opened last night and welcomed teenagers to hang out among the rides, games and carnival food at Devereux Beach. My son was among the mainly seventh and eighth graders who took their place in attending this timeless tradition. I showed up at 8pm and spent an hour walking around and capturing a few images using scattered puddles from the intermittent rain to make for more interesting compositions. This was my favorite image from last night with the Music Fest ride in full swing and the name reflected in the puddle [...]

Carnival Reflections

It's here! The annual Marblehead High School carnival begins tonight at 6pm at Devereux Beach. So, technically the carnival was set to open yesterday but, when I drove out to check it out and see if I could capture some new images, I was told by a 'gamer' that they decided to postpone due to the cold and rain.  It seems the rain always follows the carnival and I have enjoyed capturing images of the rides in the morning and night using puddles as reflections. This image is from 2014's version and back in the day when the Ferris wheel [...]

Stars and Stripes and Glover’s Regiment

The annual Marblehead Christmas Walk took place on December 1st and, with it, Glover's Regiment arrived to reenact the crossing of the Delaware by way of Marblehead Harbor. Before setting out, they took up position to address the gathered crowd and recount the history of General Glover. I had been set up at the benches behind them ready to capture the musket fire that would follow this speech. When I saw Glover's Regiment lined up under the stars and stripes (and the State Street Landing star as well), I couldn't pass up the shot. Black and white helped accentuate the [...]
