Abbot Hall

Remembering a Full Harbor and Foggy Summer Days

As the days get shorter, the weather cooler and Marblehead harbor begins to empty, I can't help but bring out a photo from a foggy Summer day in 2012.  I had gone out on this fog filled day hoping to capture images of boats in Marblehead harbor surrounded by the atmospheric fog.  I had envisioned shots of boats with the thick fog serving to hide any signs of houses across the shore. What I found when I arrived on Marblehead Neck was a more perfect scene than I imagined.  The houses across the shore had indeed disappeared in the fog but Abbot [...]

An Iconic View

On Thursday, I shared an image of Abbot Hall, Old North Church and the new St. Michael's steeple captured on a recent dawn morning.  This composition was what really brought me out on that day and it could not have happened without the help of three people. Ulrike Welsch is a phenomenal local photographer and I happened upon her image of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that it wasn't clear which was in front of the other.  I commented in the prior post that I learned the location of this shot from Uli but was dismayed to [...]

A Perfect Morning in Marblehead

I can't imagine a better start to the day than capturing this image on a perfect morning in Marblehead yesterday.  The road to this shot was long and convoluted - I hope you don't mind a bit of a backstory... A few years ago, I happened upon an image by Ulrike Welsch of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that one couldn't quite tell which was in front of the other.  The composition was nothing short of brilliant and I tried in vain to figure out where it was taken from.  Fast forward to a recent Farmer's Market [...]

Abbot in the Clouds

As I made my way around town on Saturday scouting out locations for the lunar eclipse, I found myself staring up at the familiar facade of Abbot Hall.  I had come up Atlantic Avenue headed toward Abbot Hall to check angles for the projected path of the moon and I realized I had never captured an image of Abbot Hall from this vantage point. The appearance of Abbot Hall after a slight turn on Atlantic Avenue (and the similar one when turning onto Washington Street from Pleasant) seems to be one of those odd moments where I know that Abbot [...]

Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall

On Sunday, September 27th, a total lunar eclipse was set to take place.  Not only was this to be a total lunar eclipse but it was taking place during a full supermoon which lent itself to the hashtag #superbloodmoon due to the expected red color of the moon during totality.  I had scouted a few locations in the days leading up to the event and then prayed for clear skies.  Thankfully, everything came together perfectly on Sunday night...all except the location of the moon relative to every other object in Marblehead.  Note: this final image is a composite of two [...]

No Vacancies in Marblehead Harbor

Well, it's over...Summer has officially ended.  I thought I would post this image captured on the morning of August 29 (taken 30 minutes after Monday's image) to commemorate the end of a picture perfect Summer in Marblehead.  We couldn't have asked for better weather to make up for the historic cold and record setting snow of Winter. I figured that an image of Marblehead Harbor filled to capacity and lit by the golden glow of sunrise would make for an appropriate End of Summer image.  Here's to a great Autumn.

Abbot Hall – Home of the Spirit of 76

As sunset neared, I drove up Washington Street, wondering what new compositions the ultra wide lens might offer me.  One of the limitations of capturing buildings is that any angles off center introduce perspective shifts causing buildings to appear to fall back or loom overhead.  At 11mm on a full frame sensor, the full height of Abbot Hall could be captured even from this vantage point below it.  I took advantage of that and included the blue sign proclaiming Abbot Hall to be the home of the Spirit of 76 painting. Enjoy the Weekend!

Rays of Light over Marblehead Harbor

Today's image was taken on Tuesday, August 18 from the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club.  I had set up early for sunset figuring the clouds in the sky might offer a decent show.  As it happened, the clouds served to create these beautiful rays of light while the sun was still fairly high above the horizon. The clouds then thickened as the sun descended and caused the sunset to fizzle out.  I saw the lackluster show developing and so I packed up my camera and tripod and headed to the car.  It was then that I noticed the Eastern [...]

Supermoon Setting over Marblehead Harbor

What a weekend! I chased the moon quite literally from moonrise to moonset starting on Friday night and ending on Sunday morning.  The sturgeon moon (as August's full moon is called) was also labeled as a supermoon for being 8% larger than a regular full moon.  With that in mind, I again borrowed a super zoom in the hopes of replicating one of my all time favorite images - the supermoon setting over Abbot Hall taken in March 2011. On this occasion, the moon set proved much trickier with Saturday's descent occurring 30 minutes before sunrise and Sunday's taking place [...]

Purple Bolt of Lightning over Marblehead Harbor

On August 4th, a procession of thunder storms developed around Marblehead.  I had headed out to Chandler Hovey park for the first one and found incredible light that kept me busy but was disappointed by the few bolts of lightning.  When the winds shifted threatening to bring the storm closer to Marblehead, I ducked into the car and pulled up the radar.  I saw an even bigger storm with purple dots mixed in with the deep red core and thought I would have another chance to catch a bolt of lightning over Marblehead Harbor. I set up at the base [...]
