Abbot Hall

Abbot Hall in Dawn’s Glowing Light

More images from New Years day to start off this week.  This was the first thing I saw when I climbed out onto the base of St. Michael's steeple to welcome 2016.  Dawn's glowing light was illuminating clouds to the West and I quickly set up for an image including Abbot hall from this unique vantage point.

Top 10 of 2015 – Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall

One of my favorite aspects of creating a Top 10 list each year is going through the 240+ images shared in a given year and appreciating the unique opportunities I've had the fortune to capture.  Just as yesterday's image of fireworks could easily have been a #1 favorite in any other year, it's hard to believe this image of a total lunar eclipse (or blood moon) juxtaposed against Abbot Hall isn't in the top spot. This was easily the most difficult capture of the year and required pre-planning and rapid alterations to those plans when the reality of shooting this [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Smoke on the Water

Another image from the Winter of deep cold and mountains of snow.  In the original post, I wrote "On Thursday, January 8, Marblehead was blasted by an arctic cold the likes of which I had not felt in my time here.  The temperature this morning was -4F throughout my one hour photo shoot and that does not take into account the wind chill that likely pushed it below -20F.  As I drove across the causeway to Marblehead Neck, I saw sea smoke to my right at Devereux Beach but then looked to the left and saw wisps of it inside [...]

Historic Downtown Marblehead – Don’t Tread on Tucker Street

Continuing with Saturday's exploration of historic downtown Marblehead during the Winter parking ban, this is the view of Tucker Street looking up from Hooper Street. I had passed this street a number of times over the Summer and kept thinking it would make for a nice image and new vantage point of Abbot Hall.  As I walked around on this morning, I found the light to be just about perfect for finally capturing this image. The title comes from the two versions of the Gadsden flag flying on either side of Tucker Street.  Both carry the image of a rattlesnake [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Santa Waves to the Gathering Crowd

As the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk parade came to a close, Santa and Mrs. Claus turned the corner onto Washington Street waving to the gathered crowd.  With the unseasonable warm temperatures, the crowd was quite large this year and I decided to focus on Santa as he waved while trying to capture the size of the crowd lined up along Washington Street as well as Abbot Hall in the distance. The final image seemed to capture what is so special about Marblehead and this time of year - a perfect mix of holiday and tradition carried through in the present [...]

Sunset in the Snow

The past week in Marblehead featured some incredible sunrises and sunsets and, for a variety of reasons, I missed every single one of them.  I got to enjoy a few while home with the family but was never in position to capture one. I decided to look through my 'to be posted' archive for vibrant sunsets and stopped at this image captured on February 10th of this year.  I shared a horizontal view shortly after taking this picture of a beautiful sunset forming over Abbot Hall which I captured from Crocker Park covered in a very deep blanket of snow. [...]

Come Visit Me at Harbor Holidays at the Boston Yacht Club

I feel very fortunate to have been invited back for my second year at the Boston Yacht Club's Harbor Holidays event.  It seemed like a great time to share this image taken on June 3, 2013 and never posted to the site.  I had gone out on this day to capture the tradition of firing a cannon at sunset.  Before the cannon fired, I couldn't help but capture this view of the full facade of the Boston Yacht Club.  You can also make out Abbot Hall tower in the distance. I will be at the Boston Yacht Club on Saturday, [...]

The Glowing Waters of Marblehead Harbor

I drove across the causeway on Sunday and was delighted to see frostbite sailing underway but depressed by the absence of boats in the harbor.  Between that, the too-early sunsets and the raw cold day Saturday, I was in the mood for a warm image to start this week. This image comes from July 16, 2013 and a boat ride through Marblehead Harbor.  For those boaters out there with moorings in Marblehead Harbor, I'm sure I don't have to tell you just how amazing of a harbor we have in this town.  There are literally hundreds of good angles and [...]

Warm Summer Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

This week has felt much more like the end of Summer than late Fall.  I haven't been able to motivate to shoot Marblehead Harbor now mostly emptied of boats on these warm Fall days and so I looked in the archive for a better representation of this perfect weather. The image was taken on August 18th and, as you can see, the harbor was filled with boats.  There's nothing better than enjoying a warm Summer sunset over Marblehead Harbor.

The Path to Abbot Hall

I often neglect the backside of Abbot Hall in favor of capturing the tower and its clock.  On a recent outing with a super wide lens, I tried to find a new composition for this very photogenic building. By shooting from the back and incorporating the path as a leading line, I hoped to draw the eye in and allow the viewer to take in the beautiful architecture of the building. Have a great weekend and Halloween!
