Devereux Beach

Ocean Glow

I had been watching the sky last night at around 7pm and couldn't decide if we might have a nice sunset and ended up opting to stay in. But then I heard a clap of thunder and checked the radar to find a bright red spot passing just south of Marblehead and jumped in the car.  I drove to Devereux Beach and arrived to find the last light of a rainbow fading. Unfortunately, no lightning appeared as I had hoped. Instead, I stayed until sunset and shot along the beach. I worked on three images when I returned home and [...]

Calm Ocean

This was taken on May 1st - the same night I captured the pink and blue light over Marblehead Neck. Once that show was over, I turned towards Devereux Beach and found the calm ocean was reflecting the warm colors of sunset. I timed this shot to include the small amount of white at the edge of a wave coming to shore.

Top 10 of 2020 – #1 – Gold Coast, Marblehead

This was my favorite outing of the 2020. On June 24th, I headed to Devereux Beach and the causeway chasing the tail end of a rainstorm at sunset to find an incredibly vibrant rainbow and then a sunset that exploded in light and color lasting almost 30 minutes before it was done. I have many favorite images from this evening but I kept going back to this one of peak color in the sky creating a gold coast from the sands of Devereux. For the perfect color in the clouds, the reflections in the sand, that small wave coming to [...]

November Surf

Last night I decided to look through all images captured in November that were stuck in my 'to be posted' folder and rediscovered this shot captured on November 18, 2012. I had come away with a couple of keepers from this outing to Devereux Beach on a warm November evening but decided to go with another image over this long exposure shot at the time. I decided to reset and start over in processing this shot captured over 1/4 of a second with a small aperture to capture the movement of the November surf pulling back from shore into the [...]

Surfs Up Marblehead

Hurricane Teddy will miss the Eastern coast of the United States but is forecast to bring us high seas and strong winds that should create amazing surfing conditions today.  According to surf-forecast.com, Devereux Beach is supposed to hit a perfect 10 rating tonight with 15 foot wave heights and low tide conditions. I will definitely be heading to the beach with my longest lens hoping to capture a few surfers taking advantage of the conditions... Surfs Up Marblehead!

Gold Coast, Marblehead

Hard to believe that it was one month ago when I captured the best light of the summer at Devereux Beach. This was the night that I caught a full rainbow over the causeway and thought that would be the peak of light only to discover this incredible view of the Gold Coast on the shores of Devereux Beach twenty minutes later. This is the sixth image I will have shared from the hour spent running back and forth between the causeway and beach on June 24, 2020. I shot these two clouds from various angles and with differing compositions [...]

Summer at the Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that last Wednesday's outing led to one of the best sunsets of the year - including an awesome rainbow over the causeway. I shared some of the rainbow shots last week but worked on the rest of the images from that night over the weekend. This is an image from the water's edge at Devereux Beach from when I arrived at 7:30pm. I was pretty happy with the dramatic light and cloud cover. Little did I know just how good the light would get.

Rainbow Sunset

I was pretty happy after capturing the double rainbow over the causeway but, since the clouds were sticking around, I figured I would wait until the sun set. Exactly 30 minutes after shooting the panorama from the causeway, I was rewarded for my patience with an incredible sunset. You can just make out the last remnants of the rainbow touching the clouds which had reached what I thought was peak color over the Atlantic ocean. I packed up after this shot thinking the light was done and headed back home only to make one more stop when the clouds exploded [...]

Moonlit Sunset

Today we go back 7 years to July 15, 2013 and this moonlit sunset over Devereux Beach. I had decided to push the exposure time to 6 seconds by lowering the ISO to 50 and the aperture of the lens to f/22 which served to turn the ocean water into a perfectly calm canvas for reflecting the soft pink light of sunset. The half moon was a nice bonus to break up that patch of sky over the clouds.

Beach Party

No April Fools Jokes this year but rather a hopeful look forward to a similar beach party scene taking place at Devereux Beach this summer. Everytime I look at this image, I notice something new. Between the sunbathers on the beach, the swimmers in the ocean and those on the wet sand in between, there are endless micro scenes to explore.
