Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

Sunday's arctic air resulted in a display of sea smoke the likes of which I had never seen before in Marblehead.  The display kept me busy capturing various compositions as the wind and light changed to drastically alter the scene before me. On Monday, I shared a wide view of the sun just rising over the cloud of sea smoke and setting a nearby patch aglow.  Exactly five minutes after that scene, this one appeared. The sun had risen enough to clear the smoke at the horizon and it created the most incredible backlighting for the tendrils of sea smoke forming [...]

Lighting up the Sea Smoke

This morning I was fortunate to witness and capture the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor.  I started shooting at 6:30am and clicked the shutter for the last time at 8:00am.  During that time, I took more than 100 images and, only after coffee and a hot shower, did I finally go through them to find and process my favorites.  I shared one image already but found that I had 13 favorite images of sea smoke from this morning and really wanted to show one wide view as well. The relatively warm ocean was producing copious amounts [...]

Christmas in Marblehead – Soft Light on an Empty Harbor

When I go out to shoot the town of Marblehead, it is not uncommon for me to find at least five different compositions in good light and then have to select one to share and place others in the archive.  On this day, I had set up at the pier of the Pleon Yacht Club which offered me a number of photographic possibilities.  This week, I wanted to share five different images captured from 3:45pm to 4:05pm on Christmas in Marblehead. After capturing the close up of Abbot Hall, I zoomed out and focused on the clouds that were now [...]

I couldn't pass up a chance to shoot Abbot Hall in this light so I composed this image to [...]

Christmas in Marblehead – Grace and St Michaels

When I go out to shoot the town of Marblehead, it is not uncommon for me to find at least five different compositions in good light and then have to select one to share and place others in the archive.  On this day, I had set up at the pier of the Pleon Yacht Club which offered me a number of photographic possibilities.  This week, I wanted to share five different images captured from 3:45pm to 4:05pm on Christmas in Marblehead. First up was this shot looking across the harbor at Grace Community Church and St. Michael's Steeple poking out [...]

Taking the Launch

With warm images predicted for next week and little snow left on the ground, I thought it might be fun to look ahead to Summer. In early August, I had headed down to Marblehead Harbor on a picture perfect day to capture the view of a harbor filled with boats and clouds overhead.  Hammond Park seemed to be the perfect spot for this view but, as soon as I arrived, I realized the foreground was missing something. Only a few minutes later, a launch from the Marblehead Yacht Club came into the frame and I captured this view of someone [...]

A Cold Start to a New Year

I mentioned in last week's post that I started off the new year with a shoot from atop St. Michaels new steeple.  One of the first images I took was of the lit star seeming to hang over Marblehead Neck.  However, while I was up there, I couldn't resist recreating my Hooper to the Harbor shot that won Peoples Choice award in this year's festival. For the prior shot, I had been on the scaffolding around the steeple but found much more room to roam on this cold morning.  I moved to this spot which was almost exactly the same [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Smoke on the Water

Another image from the Winter of deep cold and mountains of snow.  In the original post, I wrote "On Thursday, January 8, Marblehead was blasted by an arctic cold the likes of which I had not felt in my time here.  The temperature this morning was -4F throughout my one hour photo shoot and that does not take into account the wind chill that likely pushed it below -20F.  As I drove across the causeway to Marblehead Neck, I saw sea smoke to my right at Devereux Beach but then looked to the left and saw wisps of it inside [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Lighting up the Harbor

The Fourth of July is an amazing time of year to spend in Marblehead and is easily my favorite weekend for photographing the town.  The fireworks display often takes center stage but the harbor illumination that takes place beforehand is such a unique and beautiful tradition, that I've made it a point to try to capture it as well. In 2015, I was on Marblehead Neck on July 4th and started off at this spot on Corinthian Lane capturing the flares lighting up the harbor in the last moments of dusk.  Hydrangeas in full bloom made for a perfect foreground with a harbor [...]
