Marblehead Harbor

Starting to Set

A nice comparison to Tuesday's image is this one captured from the Boston Yacht Club on July 14th as the sun was starting to set over Marblehead Harbor. As opposed to Tuesday's tight crop at 224mm causing the boats to appear stacked, this one taken at a very wide 28mm sets them further apart. The light in the sky was just starting to form at this point and would become far stronger as the night progressed but there was something about this image and the way the light reflected on the water below that made it a keeper in my [...]

Old Town and the Harbor

One of my all time favorite images was captured in 2014 from atop St Michael's new steeple looking down onto Hooper Street and the close proximity of Marblehead Harbor.  Eight years a a few blocks over, I captured this image from atop the Grace Community Church on a late June morning.  The view is both similar and very different with similar houses and the close harbor beyond historic downtown (or Old Town) Marblehead. While I still love that shot from 2014, this was a fun one to capture.

Stacked Boats and Marblehead Light

On June 13th, I headed to Crocker Park for the moonrise but arrived a bit early. The sky was clear which was perfect for capturing the moon close to the horizon but meant little in the way of interest for a bonus sunset shot. However, as the sun began to set, it cast a nice soft light on the stacked boats in the harbor and I found this simple composition with Marblehead Light centered in the top of the frame. I'm not sure what it is about this shot but I ended up liking much more than I expected.  Hope [...]

Intermezzo

Last one from the outing on July 14th (for this week anyway). We were heading out of the harbor at 5:50pm and the breaks in the clouds had created incredible rays of light shining down over Marblehead Harbor. I snapped away as we motored out and really liked this image as the light seems to be shining directly on the boat named Intermezzo.

Sunset Reflections at the BYC

Just imagine having to sit through dinner at the BYC with me while this sky was taking shape over Marblehead Harbor... Thankfully, our hosts have known me since the day we moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and both they and my wife gave their approval every time I looked out over the water. For this shot, I decided to move the camera just above water level to maximize the sunset reflections in the calm harbor water.

Golden Light on Boden Beach

When I headed across the causeway to the Neck on Tuesday, July 12th, I had hoped for a decent sunset and lucked out with some great light that went through a number of shades as I moved around on the Pleon Yacht Club pier. This shot was the start of that night and I decided to compose the shot wide enough to include the golden light reflecting on the waters at this private beach. I wondered about the name of it and found a reference to Boden Beach on Google Maps. Since it's a private beach, I'm guessing the one [...]

Aglow in the Harbor

The light was changing quickly as we motored through the harbor last Thursday and I was treated to a brief view of these boats set aglow in the harbor with a dramatic sky overhead creating a wonderful contrast to the bright white mast of the nearest sailboat. Wish I knew the name of this one and wonder if it matches the scene...

Red Sky at Night

On Tuesday, July 12th, I had made my way to Devereux Beach as sunset approached with an eye on capturing the full buck moon rising. Though not full until the following day, the timing of the moonrise was preferable on Tuesday.  However, once I reached the beach, I found the cloud cover too thick for hopes of a moonrise and quickly decided to try for a sunset instead as the clouds held some promise. I stopped at a few locations before turning down Foster Street and making my way to the Pleon pier from which I wandered a bit further [...]

Rays of Sunlight over Marblehead Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post that we had taken a quick ride through the harbor last Thursday and that I was treated to some great light. The light was different in every direction (two more images coming later in the week to show case this) and the rays of sunlight were a particular draw. For this shot, I tried to time it so the two sailboats with their triangular lines (can you tell I have zero nautical knowledge?) would serve to accentuate the lines of the sunrays and tried to get Abbot situated nicely behind the taller boat in the [...]

Purple Rain over the Harbor

Shortly after yesterday's image of that orange sky over Crocker, the thunderstorm arrived and a mix of wind and rain pelted the few people at Crocker Park. I stood under the gazebo and watched the sky, then radar, hoping the storm would move fast enough to allow me to capture a rainbow over the Neck. The storm ended up building then stalling so I missed the chance for a rainbow but made sure to run out as the rain slowed to take in the view of purple rain over the harbor. The rain was actually to my left over the [...]
