Marblehead Harbor

Empty Harbor Dawn

Another image from my outing on the morning of April 16th and lucking out with some great dawn colors. I had shared a tighter shot focusing on Marblehead Light and Childrens Island but thought I would share this one today. I had zoomed out to include the stacked lobster traps as well as the American flag at the State Street Landing. The empty harbor filled with moorings seems to be awaiting the arrival of warmer days and boats to fill their spots. I imagine the next few days will see a lot of activity in Marblehead harbor as 70 degree [...]

Spring is Here – First Boat in Midharbor

After capturing the view at Waterside Cemetery on Wednesday, I continued to drive around Marblehead and then onto the Neck to find scenes of spring.  As I turned down Foster Street, I spotted a boat perfectly positioned on its mooring in midharbor and found a nice spot along the Pleon pier where I could line it up with Abbot Hall and the BYC. From there it was just a matter of waiting for a break in the clouds and capture the feeling of a perfect spring day in Marblehead. For those who can't zoom in 200% to read the boat's [...]

Adrift

For this being my first (and likely only) outing in March, the night of March 18th proved to be quite productive with 7 keepers captured between Foster Street and Corinthian Lane. When I first arrived at Corinthian Lane, I was immediately drawn to this small boat. I titled this 'adrift' but the boat was tied up securely and not very far from the shore at low tide. I used a telephoto lens to help compress the expanse of harbor between the boat and Abbot Hall in the distance. I also chose a slightly more open aperture of f/5.6 to give [...]

A Beautiful Sunset on an Awful Day

Many of those who see these images have ties to Marblehead but no longer reside within its 4.4 square miles. As such the title of today's post may sound odd or be assumed to be about me...it's not. A tragic car accident took the life of a Marblehead High School senior on March 18th and the community has been rocked by the loss. As any father would, I felt the news as a gut punch. After a long day, I felt the need to get out and made my way across that causeway and onto the Neck having no plan [...]

Golden Light of Summer

I really hate the end of Daylight Savings Time and so, with that in mind, I instantly gravitated to this shot taken after 8pm (!!!) on June 15th when an awesome sunset shifted to shades of gold. That golden light seems to be most strongly associate with early summer evenings and I was thrilled to be out there to witness and capture it. As we trudge toward colder days and ever earlier sunsets, I to hold on to the memory of warm and long days of summer in Marblehead.

Tuckers Wharf Dawn

I was looking for an image to share and happened upon this one captured as the sun appeared over Marblehead Neck just after dawn on October 3rd. I was standing at Tuckers Wharf to try to maximize the number of boats seen in the harbor. I lucked out with the light on this morning as it transitioned from a yellow-orange dawn to a pink sunrise.  I love these late sunrises in the fall solely for the opportunity to get out and capture them at a reasonable hour.

Anticrepuscular Sunset

On October 20th, I headed out to capture the moonset and was disappointed by the small band of low lying clouds that obstructed my view. Less than 30 minutes later when I actually would have loved to have clouds reflecting the light of the rising sun, they were nowhere to be found. Instead I lucked out when I spotted these thin anticrepuscular rays behind Crocker Park. With the light hitting Abbot hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church, the rays added just enough interest to the otherwise empty sky on this fall morning in Marblehead.

Reflections on a Good Summer

I was looking for a photo to share having built up my 'to be posted' archive with several productive outings and happened upon this image captured at dawn on October 3rd. I had lucked out with a far nicer than expected dawn and sunrise and made sure to capture it with various compositions. Here I tried to accentuate the reflections of boats on the still waters of Marblehead Harbor which was serving almost like a mirror to bring color throughout the scene. As I tried to figure out a good title, I thought that 'Reflections on a Good Summer' suited [...]

Casting Shadows on the Water

I drove around on Saturday trying to figure out this year's foliage situation. The maples had turned early as usual and hadn't put on much of a show. I had spotted some vibrant colors in spots in the past week but not as much as I hoped for. Knowing that peak foliage had taken place on October 17 last year, I figured I had a decent shot of finding some color. Well, I drove around for an hour and just about gave up. Meanwhile, the clouds seemed to hold promise so when I got a text from a friend out [...]

Dawn’s Early Light

On Sunday morning, I awoke just after 5am and decided to make the most of that with a photo outing at the State Street Landing. I had checked sunrise location and times and thought I read that the sun would cross the horizon at 6:20am. Given that, I drove out early and arrived at State Street to find a slowly developing yellow-orange glow of dawn's early light. The light had a great effect on the still waters of Marblehead Harbor but, within minutes, had disappeared leaving a mostly grey view. I waited and waited but did not see signs of [...]
