Marblehead Neck

Last Light on a Full Harbor

As I was finalizing my image choices for this year's Marblehead Calendar, I struggled with the options I had to best represent August.  I had an image of the causeway and Devereux Beach in mind but it didn't quite fit with this year's theme.  With that in mind, I decided to head out on Sunday to capture the last light on a full harbor. I launched the drone from Crocker Park having arrived as the sun was beginning to set.  The angle of the sun continued to shine light on nearly all of Marblehead Harbor as well as the Neck [...]

Golden Masts in Marblehead Harbor

This seemed like a good image to finish off the week with a view of golden masts in Marblehead Harbor reflecting the last glow of sunset.  I had gone out on June 22nd in the hopes of capturing a nice sunset and was treated to a very nice pink-orange one.  I had decided to set up with my 'real' camera as well as launch the Phantom 4 Pro and I took turns composing images from above and below as the sun set and washed Marblehead in beautiful light. While the sun was still above the horizon, I concentrated on capturing [...]

Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck

This image of Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck was captured on Wednesday, June 20th shortly after I shot the wider panorama encompassing the whole of the Neck.  While the panorama afforded a birds eye view of the Neck and harbor beyond, I really like this close up of Castle Rock for its unique view of the rocky outcropping. For all the times I have shot from atop the rock or used it in a composition, this view of the rock itself has eluded me.  With the clouds above and boats beyond, Castle Rock's central location along the Neck is accentuated [...]

Castle under the Clouds on Marblehead neck

Yesterday afternoon offered picture perfect conditions for aerial imagery of Marblehead Neck and I was fortunate to have taken the day off from work to capture the views.  I watched as the clouds filled in and then broke apart in the early morning hours and left the house a little after 11:00am to explore the possible images. I stopped at Desmoulin Lane at first and flew off shore but quickly decided that the clouds favored compositions from Castle Rock.  I drove there and flew again to find this incredible view of Marblehead Neck laid out before me. I doubt that [...]

Reflections on a Still Harbor

While aerial images can open up a world of possibilities in the hundreds of feet above Marblehead, I've really enjoyed using my new Phantom 4 Pro to capture images from just a few feet off the ground but in locations otherwise inaccessible to me before.  For today's image, I flew from Riverhead beach to these two moored lobster boats in the inner harbor and lucked out when the sun broke through the clouds behind me just as I got into position. I've always wanted to capture images of the working boats in our harbor in this way but previously was [...]

Spring has Sprung in Marblehead

I think we can safely say that Spring has sprung in Marblehead.  I was sitting at home on this Wednesday as rain fell outside and saw sunlight suddenly stream through the window as the rain slowed.  I looked at my wife and she quickly said 'go ahead' at which point I grabbed my gear and headed out hoping for a rainbow. I drove to Riverhead beach and saw a very faint rainbow form as soon as I parked.  I flew the Phantom 4 Pro across the harbor to find a solid composition but the rainbow never fully formed.  Instead, I happened upon [...]

Working Boats and Golden Light

Last Wednesday, I headed to Crocker Park with the Phantom 4 Pro in hand to capture sunset views from one of my favorite spots in town. I started off by flying over the working boats moored in an otherwise empty Marblehead Harbor and had reached this spot 40 feet above the ground when the sun broke through the clouds and lit Marblehead Neck in beautiful golden light. If you look closely, you can spot the anticrepuscular rays converging behind the Corinthian Yacht Club and there are subtle hints of the golden light reflecting in the still waters of the harbor [...]

Old Town Sunset – Aerial Panorama of historic downtown Marblehead

On Wednesdays, March 29th, the dense clouds covering Marblehead for most of the day finally began to break as the day neared its end.  I hadn't flown my Phantom 4 Pro in a few weeks due to rain, clouds and otherwise terrible lighting.  When I finally made it up in the air, I knew the lighting on this night was going to be pretty special and ended up with a spectacular view of an Old Town sunset. I explored a few vantage points as I flew over Marblehead and fought the building wind as I chased the light.  I found [...]

Last Light on Marblehead Neck

On March 8th, I captured one of my favorite aerial images of Marblehead Neck while the sun was still quite high in the sky.  Afterward, I flew around the Neck and finally off the coast of Chandler Hovey Park as the sun set and cast its last light on Marblehead Neck. The most exciting aspect of capturing aerial images of Marblehead is the change in perspective which, in this image, shows the proximity of the Neck to the mainland and Boston's beautiful skyline in the distance.

Full Worm Moon over Flying Point

I can't describe how cold it was tonight while waiting for the full moon to rise over Flying Point.  With the clear night sky, I decided to drive over to Greystone beach having scouted out the projected rise of the full worm moon.  I had initially considered shooting the moonrise over Children's Island but decided in the end to try to capture it over the tip of Marblehead Neck instead. I set up about 10 minutes early with a borrowed 600mm lens and waited...and waited.  The cold air seemed to blow right through all layers of clothing and my hands [...]
