Marblehead Neck

Four Hundred Feet over Marblehead Neck

I just couldn't wait to share tonight's sunset over Marblehead Neck.  I had a small window to shoot tonight but the building clouds which began to appear around 4pm made me certain that the sunset would be worth chasing.  I stopped home after dropping my kids at their afternoon activities and headed out with an idea for an aerial panorama of Marblehead Neck. I was a bit worried as the winds would gust on the ground and I received a few warnings from the drone as I took it up to four hundred feet over Marblehead Neck from the launch [...]

Sunset on the Neck

Last week I sat for the FAA part 107 certification examination and became a certified pilot of small unmanned aircraft systems (aka drones).  In celebration, I wanted to share some images that I have been working on with the Phantom 4 Pro while exploring the many new compositions available to me with a third degree of movement above Marblehead. This image of sunset on the Neck was taken on Friday, March 3rd.  I had returned home from work and watched the clouds along the way wondering if they might pick up the light of the setting sun.  I grabbed the [...]

Night on the Neck

Phew!  If you've been wondering why my posts tapered off and became non-existent in the past week, it was because I was studying during any free time I had for my Boards exam.  Every 10 years, physicians need to 'certify' (their words) that we are staying up to date on the practice of medicine by sitting for an examination.  In my case, the American Board of Allergy and Immunology put together 200 questions to be answered in a span of 4 hours covering the full breadth of what I do day in and day out.  I took the opportunity to listen [...]

Harvest Moon Rises over Homes on the Neck

A full moon is due to rise tonight and that put me in mind of past moonrises that I had not yet shared.  Today's image comes from the Harvest Moon that rose over homes on Marblehead Neck on September 26, 2015. I had borrowed a friend's super telephoto lens and zoomed to its maximum of 400mm for this view of a seemingly huge Harvest moon.  You can just make out a seagull flying through the evening sky as the masts of boats moored in the harbor punctuate the scene.

Pastel Clouds over Marblehead Neck

Today's image comes from February 21 and a relatively warm Winter day at Fort Sewall.  I had gone out with the aim of shooting the moon but a solid sunset developed which grabbed my attention well before the moon rose. As the sun set, it spread soft light that reflected off these pastel clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I love this spot at Fort Sewall as I am able to capture the whole of the Neck in one frame (using my wide angle lens) and showcase its island-like appearance. I chose to include the rocky shore and white surf to break up [...]

Childrens Island and the Neck Bathed in Golden Light

On February 21st, I headed to Fort Sewall to chase what was shaping up to be a nice sunset and to capture the moon rising behind the great tree.  As luck would have it, the clouds had moved into a perfect position to reflect and accentuate sunset's golden light and I ended up with a number of keepers from various locations at the fort. This image represents the peak of the golden light that illuminated Childrens Island and the Neck.  I had been shooting over Gerry Island when I spotted the clouds and quickly found a position from which I [...]

Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

Sunday's arctic air resulted in a display of sea smoke the likes of which I had never seen before in Marblehead.  The display kept me busy capturing various compositions as the wind and light changed to drastically alter the scene before me. On Monday, I shared a wide view of the sun just rising over the cloud of sea smoke and setting a nearby patch aglow.  Exactly five minutes after that scene, this one appeared. The sun had risen enough to clear the smoke at the horizon and it created the most incredible backlighting for the tendrils of sea smoke forming [...]

Christmas in Marblehead – Last Light on Marblehead Light

When I go out to shoot the town of Marblehead, it is not uncommon for me to find at least five different compositions in good light and then have to select one to share and place others in the archive.  On this day, I had set up at the pier of the Pleon Yacht Club which offered me a number of photographic possibilities.  This week, I wanted to share five different images captured from 3:45pm to 4:05pm on Christmas in Marblehead. As the light began to fade, I moved to the right edge of the pier and composed this image [...]

Marblehead Neck under the Pink Glow of Sunset

In mid-December, I headed out before sunset to shoot from the causeway.  It was yet another warm evening in a Winter that had been seeing above normal temperatures.  I started to shoot as the sun set and the sky lit up in this pastel pink color. My favorite image included this view of Marblehead Neck with working boats along the shore and scattered clouds breaking up the beautiful sky.

Sea Smoke on Marblehead Neck

Here is another image from my dawn outing to capture sea smoke in Marblehead harbor.  I shared a close up view of the lighthouse surrounded by the incredible image of sea smoke rising from the water last week.  As the sun rose (and my time ran short - I had to be at work by 7:30am), I made my way towards the car with regular looks across the water. At 7:23am when this image was taken, the sun had finally risen in the morning sky to illuminate the clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly composed this shot to include the [...]
