Storm’s A Coming

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Crocker Park on that Wednesday at dawn hoping for a bit of red sky that might precede the coming storm. In the wide view I shared, the hints of red could only be seen close to the horizon. I took advantage of my zoom lens to compose a tighter shot that encompassed the patch of red sky and ignoring the blue surrounding it. At its peak (15 minutes before the wider shot), there was a bit of that fiery glow to alert sailors that a storm's a coming to [...]

Remembering the Sunrise

It's been over three months since I last woke up in the pre-dawn hours to chase a sunrise. For the most part, the last month has offered little in the way of good light to make up for any lost sleep. However, I noticed that I missed a nice sunrise this past weekend which made me want to look back and see just how long it had been since I had last shot the sun rising up from the horizon. This outing on April 15 turned out to be one of my more memorable sunrise shoots. I came away with [...]

Spring in the Park

Two weeks ago on Wednesday, April 14th, I had visited Crocker Park with the hope of shooting a nice sunrise. I lucked out with the shot I shared this past Monday of the sun coming up behind Marblehead Light but when I turned my head, I spotted this incredible sky behind me and ran to capture images of it as well. I shared my first image from that morning as soon as I returned home but had a chance to visit the other shots from that morning and worked on this one last night. In the first shot, I had [...]

Chandler Hovey Sunrise

I'm going to try to be better about getting back to regular morning posts and this seemed like a great way to kick things back into gear... Normally, getting the sun (or moon) perfectly placed behind Marblehead Light would have been planned out ahead of time by using at least one (and likely two) apps to determine location and angles and...  But on this particular April morning, I lucked out. I had gotten up on April 14th to shoot the sunrise as promised storms hinted at a nice sunrise and I made my way somewhat blindly toward Crocker Park. I [...]

Wake Up Call

Two great sunrises in a row! So I wasn't entirely sure if it was worth setting an alarm for 5:30am again. I had checked my weather apps and saw some cloud cover predicted but then I recalled that age-old saying 'Red Sky in Morning, Sailors Take Warning' and figured, with rain coming later today, it was worth it. I woke and headed out with a single destination in mind - Doaks Lane. With the tide low, I knew the natural land bridge to Gerry Island would be at least somewhat visible and serve as a great leading line to the [...]

Spring Sunrise at Crocker Park

A brand new photo from this morning's really fun outing! I wasn't sure how the morning would pan out when I set the alarm for 5:30 but had three locations in mind for shooting the sunrise. As I got in the car only 10 minutes before sunrise, I was disappointed not to see any color in the sky and quickly decided on Crocker Park as the best vantage point as the high clouds seemed to be moving west.I parked at the State Street landing and headed up to find a nearly empty park and a bit of color behind Marblehead [...]

Little Harbor Dawn

The light really doesn't get much better than this view of Little Harbor at dawn... On Saturday, December 12th, I woke before the dawn and headed down to Little Harbor hoping the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailor take warning' might prove true with predictions of strong rains later in the day. I arrived to find a mostly empty harbor and the first hint of light in the sky. I started shooting when the lights turned on in one of the working boats headed out for the day and kept at it as the sky brightened. Twenty minutes after [...]

A New Day Dawns

As the month of October came to a close, I happened to have several great outings and posted new content day after day through the weekend. It felt great until November 3rd and then it all stopped. I can't be the only one who refreshed my iPhone, tablet and desktop every few minutes literally for days waiting for an answer to an election that really does feel like the most important one in a generation. With this country divided, a decision needed to be made on which way we would move forward and, after days of counting, that decision finally [...]

Nirvana

This is my favorite time of year for sunrise shoots. The sun rises at 7:15am usually with mild temperatures and the frequent storms often bring great light.  With yet another storm forecast for Thursday afternoon, I figured conditions were absolutely perfect for a vibrant sunrise. I woke up at a reasonable time, headed to Hammond Park, and found still waters reflecting a whole lot of nothing... The scene was kind of boring with lackluster skies and I kept hoping for some light as the timing of sunset approached. Just as 7:15 rolled around, a working boat decided to head out [...]
