Snowed in – Winter in Marblehead

This image was captured after yesterday's share from February 10 at Crocker Park.  The last light of sunset was fading as I headed to my car and looked back to find the incredible piles of snow pushed against this house on the corner of Darling and Front Streets. I remembered that I had a very similar image and checked my archives to find it was taken on February 9, 2013.  It's amazing to see the difference in snow height compared to the last snowy Winter in Marblehead. A Blanket of Snow over Marblehead

On February 10th, I had gone out to Crocker Park in order to capture images of this historic Winter with record amounts of snow.  I was rewarded with an incredible sunset that lit up the sky and colored the snow in a pink hue. Before capturing that image, I had worked on several other compositions as the light began to develop.  This image is a tighter shot than the prior sunset view and features an undisturbed patch of snow in the foreground with a blanket of snow seemingly thrown over the town of Marblehead. As I worked on this image, I [...]

Stuck in a Frozen Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, I headed out at sunrise to capture images of Marblehead Harbor frozen from the arctic cold that has held strong for much of the past month.  I began by shooting from the mainland but then decided to drive across the causeway for images of the working boats now stuck in a frozen Marblehead harbor. I've never seen this much ice in Marblehead harbor before and, while nowhere near the thickness of ice in images from the 1970's, it made for an awesome sight.  I decided to compose this image with Abbot Hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church visible [...]

Frozen Marblehead Harbor at Sunrise

Today is my 40th birthday.  In the past, I have made it a point to capture the sunrise on my birthday each year and I have ended up with some favorite images to start each new year of life.  This year with forecasts for cloudy skies on Wednesday morning and overcast conditions for today, I opted to shoot the sunrise a day early. I started off intending to shoot from Hammond Park but it was closed off by a literal mountain of snow.  I was able to get close to the waters edge and found an incredible scene of a [...]

A Path Through the Snow

This is the last image I captured on February 10th when I visited Crocker Park and witnessed an incredible sunset.  After the light had reached its peak, I packed up my gear and made my way back to the car through chest-high snow drifts. I finally made it this path through the snow and, near the end, turned back to see the last hints of pink in the evening sky.  I quickly set up the tripod and camera to capture this view showcasing just how much snow has fallen on this record-setting Winter. Who said there is no beauty to [...]

Frozen Tundra at Riverhead Beach

On Sunday night, I had decided to head out to capture the sunset as a snowstorm departed and truly arctic cold descended on Marblehead.  The wind chill promised to drive temperatures to their lowest point in the past twenty years and so I promptly headed to the causeway where there would be no protection from the wind and cold... As soon as I arrived on Ocean Avenue, I turned toward Riverbed Beach where the last rays of sunlight were bathing the frozen tundra before me.  After carefully negotiating huge drifts of snow, I found this scene before me of snow and [...]

Blowing Snow at Devereux Beach

The snow this Winter has been ridiculous - more so because the Winter has been compressed into all of 30 days of snowfall.  After the latest storm left, a bitter cold wind remained and I made the brilliant decision to go out to shoot the sunset. Without a doubt, these were the most difficult conditions I have ever shot in.  First, it took me a while to find a place to park the car with roads barely passable by one or two cars at a time.  When I did, I found myself facing incredible wind gusts that pushed the single [...]

Sun Rays through Cherry Blossoms

The past month has been a brutal one with a record amount of snow and more on the way.  With that in mind, it seemed appropriate to post a 'warm' photo and nothing matches cherry blossoms for the feeling of a warm Spring day. This image was captured on April 25th, 2014.  So we only have two months to go until the snow melts and the beauty of Spring erupts.

Working Boats under a Winter Sunset

Well, it happened again ;-) - a day of ocean effect snow and dreary grey skies began to clear right at 4:00pm.  I had to drop off my son somewhere so I grabbed my tripod and camera bag and decided to see if my luck might hold for a second evening. I had a very hard time deciding where to shoot.  I drove across the causeway and back again, down State Street and over to Front Street before doubling back.  I finally ended up at the Landing and made my way over near the Harbormaster's office. From there I could shoot toward [...]

Trodding Toward the Sunset at Crocker Park

After an impossible amount of snow fall, it seemed that the sky would never clear from its dreary grey.  But, as I finished shoveling our driveway, I noted a bit of sky poking out near the horizon.  I quickly walked into the house and up the stairs for a better view and, sure enough, blue sky could be seen in all directions under the clouds.  I figured there was a chance that the clearing would hold and the sunset would reflect off the clouds above and the freshly fallen snow that has piled up throughout the town - and so [...]
