A Blizzard on State Street

As I write today's post, predictions are for Marblehead to receive anywhere from 2 to 3 feet of snow from Monday night through Tuesday.  That led me to my photography archives and this image from February 9, 2013 when we last received almost 2 feet of snow. Once the driving ban was lifted, I headed out to capture scenes of Marblehead after the blizzard.  This view looking up State Street hadn't been shared until now and seemed to be a nice compliment to yesterday's view.

Winter Wonderland on State Street

On Saturday, January 24th, we had one of our first real snow storms of the Winter season.  It had been a while since I was last able to capture images of Marblehead in the freshly falling snow and so, as soon as I woke up, I headed out the door with a few destinations in mind. I shared an image of Fort Sewall over the weekend but this (and another image coming Wednesday) were my favorites from the day.  I had just parked on Washington Street and captured images of Old Town House when I turned the corner and found [...]

Falling Snow at Fort Sewall

On Saturday, January 24th, snow finally fell on Marblehead.  It's been a Winter without snow but we finally received a nice helping of the white stuff.  As I looked out the window in the morning, I noticed the snow sticking to the trees and I knew I had to make my pilgrimage to Fort Sewall. On January 18, 2009, I had captured my favorite image of Fort Sewall in the snow and had returned with almost every snowfall to see if I might be able to improve upon it.  Six years later, I finally had the right conditions.  I came [...]

A View of Sunset at Castle Rock

The final image from a 25 minute outing at Castle Rock is this one of the two benches that allow for prime seating and incredible views of the ocean from Marblehead Neck.  Most consider Castle Rock a perfect spot for watching the sunrise and these benches can't be beat for sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee on a Summer morning. However, with clouds in the sky to reflect the colors of the setting sun, one can find an equally beautiful view of sunset at Castle Rock.  This image captures the full view of Castle Rock facing 180 degrees [...]

Marblehead’s Coastline from Castle Rock

Continuing with Day 4 of the exploration of Castle Rock on a Wednesday afternoon in January.  After capturing the image of the beach at Castle Rock, I climbed back up the stairs and walked to my left to view the expansive Atlantic Ocean and the homes along Marblehead's coastline. The clouds did wonders for this scene and added a strong element to break up the negative space of the sky.  You can make out Tinker's island in the distance as well as a cargo ship making its way along the shipping lines.

The Beach at Castle Rock

Continuing with the 25 minute exploration of Castle Rock from January 7, this view comes immediately after capturing the Old Man in Castle Rock.  At this point, I had descended the stairs leading down towards the small beach at Castle Rock and explored a few compositions that would properly capture the area. I decided on a wide view to show the beach (made up of small to medium sized polished rocks) as well as the houses lining the coastline of Marblehead Neck and the calm Atlantic Ocean reflecting the clouds above and the colors of sunset.  The beach at Castle [...]

The Old Man in Castle Rock

I mentioned in yesterday's post that this week will feature five images captured in a 25 minute span while scouting out Castle Rock in anticipation of arctic air and sea smoke in early January. After capturing the grand view that one sees as they first come upon Castle Rock, I walked along the rock wall to the break and stairs leading to the beach below.  I have photographed this rock face on a few occasions and ended up returning here the next day to take one with a sun star and sea smoke.  After sharing that image, I received a comment [...]

The Grand View at Castle Rock

On Thursday, January 8th, an arctic cold mass was projected to hit Marblehead bring subzero temperatures and the potential for sea smoke.  I had captured sea smoke twice before and thus went out on Wednesday, January 7 to scout out some new locations.  One of those stops was at Castle Rock (where I would end up returning...twice...the next morning). I arrived at Castle Rock at 3:30pm and left about 25 minutes later.  In that time, I sought out a number of different compositions and came away with six solid images thanks to a combination of the cloud cover and the [...]

Morning Swan in Marblehead Harbor

I went out this morning as another arctic blast hit Marblehead with temperatures in the single digits (7F to be exact) before the wind chill pushed that to -10 or so.  I had hoped for a chance to shoot sea smoke from Fort Beach but was dismayed to see a harbor devoid of steam and little else to shoot. Just as the dawn ended, I spotted three swans swimming in Fort Beach.  I quickly grabbed the camera and ran to the stairs leading down to the water as the swans approached.  I captured this morning swan in Marblehead harbor with [...]

Lone Dog on Devereux Beach

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with a lone dog on Devereux Beach.  I captured this on November 23rd when I had headed to the top of the causeway to photograph the sunset as it took shape over Devereux Beach. I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the warmish weather and I managed to capture this dog in my frame before his owners were able to catch up to him giving the impression of a lone dog on the beach at sunset.
