From the Rooftops – Western View from Abbot Hall Tower

For this From the Rooftops Thursday, we return to the top of Abbot Hall Tower where I was fortunate to find myself on an early December morning.  I had climbed the scaffolding surrounding Abbot Hall to help document the work being done to restore the tower to its full beauty and function.  However, once up at the top of the scaffolding, I couldn't help but capture views of Marblehead from this incredible vantage point. In this image, I was facing roughly southwest from where I could angle the camera to include much of the Town of Marblehead and, in the [...]

Sea Smoke in the Harbor – Corinthian and Marblehead Light

Back to the incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor that took place on January 8, 2015.  This image was captured on my first round at Foster Street (I would come back after capturing the sun rise at Castle Rock before racing to work).  I had just photographed the sea smoke in the harbor with a purple sky over Abbot Hall and turned to find the sea smoke was even thicker looking out toward the Corinthian Yacht Club with Marblehead Light towering behind it. The wind was moving the sea smoke off the water and it took a few [...]

Tom Moore Rock Engulfed in Sea Smoke

Hope no one is tired of the beauty of sea smoke captured on a truly arctic morning earlier this month.  I had made it back to Castle Rock just before the sun rose and captured this image of Tom Moore Rock engulfed in sea smoke.  The smoke-formed clouds served to reflect the light of the rising sun with pastel pinks to bring color to the scene. As I worked on this image, I started to wonder about the history of Tom Moore Rock.  The best I have been able to figure out is that it started off as Nanepashemet rock and [...]

Sun Star and Sea Smoke at Castle Rock

Yesterday morning's sea smoke was responsible for one of the most frenetic and harried photo shoots I have ever had.  I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had crossed the causeway a little after 6:30 and noted sea smoke coming off the Atlantic ocean as well as within Marblehead Harbor. Over the next hour, I shot at Castle Rock (twice), Corinthian Lane (once) and Foster Street (twice).  Each outing lasted 10 minutes and was followed by a mad dash to the next location.  With temperatures of -4F and wind chills of easily -20F, I could not stand more than 10 [...]

Smoke on the Water – Marblehead Harbor filled with Sea Smoke

In 2012, I was fortunate to witness and capture sea smoke on what was easily the coldest day of that year.  Since first seeing the incredible beauty of smoke rising off the ocean at dawn, I have sought to capture it again.  I went out a number of times in 2013 but the conditions were never right for sea smoke to develop.  In January 2014, I photographed backlit sea smoke as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island.  With all prior attempts, I had hoped to see sea smoke rising within Marblehead Harbor.  I'm not exactly sure what conditions favor the [...]

From the Rooftops: Abbot Hall’s new Clock Face

I've shared two images from atop the scaffolding which surrounded Abbot Hall during its much needed recent restoration.  One of the reasons I was able to climb to the top for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was that I was capturing images of the work as it unfolded.  One of the requests was for images of detail work and the new clock face. On this day, I had waited at the base of the scaffolding from sunrise until the crew had gathered and begun taking their positions throughout the scaffolding.  I climbed up as fast as I was able and reached this [...]

Lobster Boat encircled by Sea Smoke

There's only one good thing about the arctic conditions that periodically descend upon Marblehead - Sea Smoke.  I had first witnessed the phenomenon in January 2012 when the temperature dropped to the single digits with a wind chill bringing it to well below zero.  On that day, I was rewarded for braving the cold with a truly awesome view of Marblehead Light. As the sun rose and the sea smoke continued to rise from the Atlantic ocean, I sought other compositions from my spot along Front Street.  I have a few left to share in my 'to be posted' archive [...]

Sunlight through the Windshield at Little Harbor

This image comes from a dawn photo shoot in early October.  I had decided to shoot in the area around Little Harbor on this particular morning as I had noticed a few trees starting to show their Fall colors.  Though the trees were far from peak, the combination of morning light and clouds added up to a strong outing. At this point, the sun had risen high enough to cast its light over Brown's Island.  The small boat had rotated so that the sunlight could be seen shining through the windshield and I captured this image to include the boat [...]

Moon Reflecting On Frozen Redd’s Pond

It's become a tradition for me to share my annual New Year's Day slideshow and this year's 10-minute show received an incredible welcome.  Another part of the day's tradition is going out to shoot. I've captured some incredible sunrises on New Year's Day in the past few years but couldn't motivate for the early morning awakening this year.  Instead, I drove around as sunset approached searching for a new composition. With the recent cold temperatures, I thought I might find some frozen waters but struck out along the shore.  I then stopped at Black Joe's and Redd's ponds and found [...]
