Top 13 of 2013 – Best Images of the Year

As we near the end of the year, I decided to look back and try to choose my favorite 13 images of 2013.  I reviewed all 257 images taken in the past year and was able to narrow down to 35 photos that stood out from the rest - whether due to composition, light or the backstory of how the image came to be.  I then turned to my Facebook page for help in narrowing down to a final 13.  While the choices made by the public were both interesting and helpful in making my final choices, in the end, [...]

A Preview of my Annual Year End Slideshow

For each of the past two years, I have compiled all the images shared and put them together into a year end slideshow.  If three years makes for a tradition, the slideshow 'premiers' on New Year's Day and has been incredibly well received in the past. I finished this year's video over the weekend and then decided to try out iMovie's trailers to see if any might offer a fun preview of the movie before the debut.  I shared the video below on my Facebook page on Sunday night. Within 24 hours, it had received over 20,000 views!  I was [...]

The Cold Moon sets over Marblehead Harbor

For those who may not have heard, I broke my left foot a few weeks ago (very lame story) and was sure that, with the coming of Winter, I would hang up the camera for a 4 week hiatus.  I continued to post photos taken from immediately prior to the accident but felt there was no way I would make it out for anything new and exciting. On Monday, December 16, my wife texted me while I was at work commenting on how incredible the moon had appeared that night.  I had totally forgotten about the full moon (not that [...]

A Final Night at Sacks Antiques

Sacks Antiques has been a family business in continuous operation since 1899.  In 1922, the antique shop opened on State Street and has offered collectors a treasure trove of items to choose from over the decades that followed.  Now in its third generation of ownership, Stan's store is sadly closing its doors.  The final sale was happening from December 4-8 and I had ended up on State Street in the midst of a two hour photoshoot capturing scenes of fog when I found myself in front of the shop. The combination of the lamp post in front, the lights on [...]

Abbot Hall on a Foggy Night

Near the end of my two hours of capturing scenes of fog on this early December night, I found myself driving by Abbot Hall.  I had noticed the spotlights shining on Abbot Hall tower previously but they were more impressive on this night with fog serving to accentuate the light.  I found this angle offered me the chance to capture both spotlights as they hit the tower and was pleased with the added light near the front door serving as a counter to the light on the tower of Abbot Hall.

Lighting up the Fog at Chandler Hovey Park

After capturing the causeway, I made my way to Chandler Hovey Park with a particular image in mind.  I knew the holiday lights had been turned on and hoped the fog would serve to accentuate them.  As it turned out, my hunch was a good one and I shared that image last week - LINK. Before I noticed the lighthouse though, I was struck by the light behind the first tree in the park.  The fog served to accentuate the beams of light as they were split by the branches of the tree and the effect was almost unreal.  I [...]

Lights and Shadows on the Causeway

Fog Week continues on Wednesdays in Marblehead with this - the first image taken on a recent night of dense fog in Marblehead.  As soon as the fog rolled in, I knew I had to head to the causeway.  I had previously photographed a great foggy night on the causeway where I was lucky enough to capture people walking along the causeway.  I realized I had never captured the causeway from the Marblehead Neck side though and sought to rectify that on this night. I started at the end of the causeway but wasn't thrilled with the far spacing from [...]

In a Fog on State Street

This image marks the start of 'fog week' with black and white images taken on an incredible foggy night in early December.  I shared a few color images from this night last week but have to admit the black and white ones ended up being my favorites.  I had six in particular that stood out and am sharing five of those this week.  The benefit of black and white, especially when it comes to images of light and fog is that it removes the distraction of color and forces the viewer to focus on textures, lines and gradients.  I hope [...]

The Landing Under a Star

Hope no one is tired of fog yet - I was like a kid in a candy store when fog as thick and dense as I can remember seeing in town enveloped Marblehead in early December.  I've shared two images thus far and wanted to add one more today taken at the end of State Street.  I had been shooting up and down State when I decided to head to The Landing and a better angle on the star above. Each year, the crane belonging to Marblehead Trading Company is adorned with a brilliantly lit star that can be seen [...]

A Foggy Night in Marblehead – State Street

On Friday, December 5th, Marblehead was enveloped by an incredibly thick layer of fog shortly after sunset.  I headed out at 7pm and spent the next two hours capturing scenes of a foggy night in Marblehead.  While most of the resulting images were converted to black and white, I kept a few in color.  This one of State Street is the first I'll be sharing. You might recognize this composition as it is very similar to 'A Shining Star Over State Street' taken after a snow storm.   This was one of the last images I captured in the fog [...]
