Sea Smoke and Orange Clouds at Marblehead Lighthouse

Back to Saturday's arctic conditions for this image of Marblehead Lighthouse and sea smoke.  After capturing Sunday and Mondays' images of sea smoke from Devereux Beach, I circled back and drove down to Front Street.  I stopped at Lovis Cove (the location for yesterday's image) and used my longest zoom to capture the incredible colors that lay before me. The sea smoke around Marblehead Lighthouse was not as impressive as the last time I had captured it [LINK] but the sky more than made up for that.  The low lying clouds were bathed in the orange glow from the just [...]

After the Storm – Lovis Cove at High Tide

On Friday, January 3rd, the storm that dropped almost 2 feet of snow and brought with it arctic temperatures had finally departed from Marblehead.  As high tide approached, the remnants of the storm's power could be seen in the astronomically high water levels and I drove around town trying to capture the feel of the storm's cold and the high tide. As I came down Front Street, I found the way to Fort Beach closed off due to flooding but saw this scene before me at Lovis Cove.  I have shot from Lovis Cove on a few occasions and actually [...]

A Wednesday in Marblehead poem – by franki elliot

A few weeks ago, I happened to read a poem shared by a friend from my Internal Medicine residency and written by her sister - franki elliot (she always uses the lowercase so I am too).  It was a brilliant piece and I wound up reading more of her works including one of her published books. One of the more incredible things that franki does is write typewriter stories on the spot for strangers.  The pieces are based on single words and come out with such power that you expect they would have taken weeks to craft rather than minutes. [...]

Sea Smoke – Cold Dawn on Devereux Beach

Saturday morning brought truly arctic temperatures to Marbleheadwith measurements of 2 F (before the wind chill).  I drove around Marblehead Neck to find the best examples of sea smoke coming off the relatively balmy Atlantic Ocean waters and decided the best view could be had from the causeway near Devereux Beach.  I started shooting at dawn when the light cloud cover erupted in pink hues before the sun rose and lit the whole sky in a fiery red (I shared that image yesterday). I sought to include as much of Devereux Beach and the Neck with Tinker's Island out in [...]

Sea Smoke at Sunrise – Tinker’s Island and the Red Glow of Dawn

I just couldn't wait to share this image until Monday so here is a rare Sunday shot showcasing an incredible moment capturing sea smoke off Devereux Beach as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island. After the storm blew through and left us with almost two feet of snow, an arctic air mass was due to envelope Marblehead and with the near zero degree temperatures came the chance of seeing sea smoke.  I had only seen sea smoke on a few occasions since moving to Marblehead and have never missed a chance to go out and capture the fleeting phenomenon.  On [...]

New Years Starts with a Storm

Just three days into 2014 and Marblehead got walloped with almost two feet of snow to go along with truly arctic conditions.  Once the snow died down on Friday, I decided to head out and try to capture the storm during the noon high tide. I started off on Ocean Avenue intending to shoot the causeway up close but found 12" of ocean water in the middle of the street and no way to safely cross it.  I decided to go with plan B which was climbing to the rocks at Goldthwait beach.  While the walk wasn't terrible (though I'm [...]

A Portrait of a Lobster Boat named Bertha

Shortly after capturing the first sunset of 2014 over Little Harbor which I shared yesterday, I turned and noted that the water in the harbor was acting like a giant perfect mirror.  The lobster boat named Bertha was the only boat left in the harbor and I settled on this composition with the giant tree at Brown's Island in the background and the two buoys spaced a bit away from the boat so as not to interfere with the reflections in the water. Enjoy the weekend.

First Sunset of 2014 – Little Harbor and the Lighthouse

The New Year started off very nicely on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I shared my annual year end slideshow to a very warm reception and then found myself at Redd's Pond where I was a bit surprised to see so many kids on the ice either learning to skate or taking part in pick up hockey games.  I shared a quick iPhone shot of that scene and must have triggered a fair share of memories as even more people seemed to identify with that image than the video. A bit later in the day, I brought my son to Redd's Pond [...]

Year in Review – Annual New Year’s Day Slideshow

For anyone who is new to my site and/or Facebook page, I thought I would start with a bit of a recap.  I moved to Marblehead with my family in May 2008.  In August 2010, I started 'Wednesdays in Marblehead' as a project to help me learn more about my new home town.  The original plan to was to share new photos once a week.  I stuck with that scheduled for the first few months but quickly discovered just how photogenic the Town of Marblehead could be.  I started to shoot various themes and set aside certain days to share [...]

A Star atop Abbot Hall – Happy New Year from Wednesdays in Marblehead

One last image to finish up an incredible year of capturing and sharing my images of Marblehead.  I had noticed that the star on the Marblehead Trading Company crane seemed to line up awfully close to the top of Abbot Hall when I crossed the causeway and had made a note to try to return at sunset to capture this image. On Friday, December 27th, I got out of work early enough to drive straight to Devereux Beach, park in the lot and make my way along the causeway to this one spot where the crane seemed to be placing [...]
