Leaves on Fire at the Old Post Office

Here is yet another view from the very productive foliage hunt that took place on Wednesday, October 17th.  Shortly after leaving the Tree on the Path, I found myself on Pleasant street to check the status of this lone tree.  I had noticed the unusual shape of the tree in my rearview mirror of all things a few weeks previously and liked the location...in front of the Old Post Office.  It turns out that this tree was showing off its great colors as well on this particular morning and I sought to capture them.  Between the color of the leaves [...]

Fall Colors come to the Path

A rare Saturday post brought about in large part to the great conditions I found when shooting on October 17th.  I had planned one shot for that day but had scouted out a number of other possible spots and found great colors at each point.  The early morning light helped a great deal as did the circular polarizer which allowed me to cut down on light reflecting off the leaves and bring more vibrancy to the images. This was taken across from the post office along The Path.  The toughest decision was whether to isolate the tree from the graffiti [...]

Gatchell Field and the Old Maple Tree

I love the huge tree that stands in the midst of Gatchell's field and have been hoping for a good shot of it at peak foliage colors.  With each passing year though, the tree seems to turn earlier and lose it's leaves far too quickly.  I'm not sure if it is stressed or sick but I just haven't been able to get the timing right for a decent image. This year, I kept passing the tree without seeing that moment but, after a rain storm, decided to head out one more time.  The top of the tree was bare at [...]

Where Mohawk and Pleasant Meet

Two weeks...that's how long I've watched and waited for this tree to get to this, the peak of its color display.  I had noted this great tree before whenever I drove by but started to get the sense that this Fall might prove an especially good one a few weeks ago.  The tree was holding onto its leaves and the color just started to change at the top initially.  Through rain and wind, the leaf drop was minimal and I kept up my scouting trips.  Finally, last week, I decided to make this my first stop on a foliage photoshoot [...]

Red Leaves and Old Town House

Last Wednesday proved to be a perfect one for shooting Fall colors around town.  This was my second stop of the morning and I got to this position on Mugford Street at a little after 9.  The sun was climbing up in the sky and offered a great backlight to this tree that really highlighted the colors of the leaves.  I liked the juxtaposition of the Fall colors against the yellow backdrop of Old Town House still covered in the red, white and blue.

The Maple Tree on the Corner

Last week, I put out a question on my Facebook page asking if anyone had a great tree in their neighborhood.  I received a few responses including one remarking on the near-peak maple at the corner of Bowden and Bessom.  As the sky cleared after a light rain and the light dipped lower in the sky, I decided to head over and check out the tree.  The report was spot on and I quickly set up in the parking lot at Gilbert and Cole to capture the maple. The most nagging part of this image was what to do about [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Seaside Park

Fall's colors have finally arrived in town and I have been trying to capture the great displays that are occurring throughout the town.  I started shooting on Wednesday and had some solid photos after an afternoon wandering throughout Old Town and beyond.  On Saturday morning, however, I was pleased to see some fog roll in and I instantly decided to shoot the one tree that had eluded me in the prior effort. This tree at Seaside park was in the wrong light when I had visited it on Wednesday but the fog brought an extra dimension to this scene that [...]

Leaves Start Changing at Lookout Court

It's Friday and time to 'play' with photography.  As I mentioned in past posts this week, I took part in a Worldwide Photowalk in which a group of 50 participants followed our leaders through the streets of Marblehead.  As the light was fairly harsh, I had decided to walk with a single lens and see if I could add to the Experimental Friday archives.  I had also been on the hunt for Fall colors in town and this scene seemed to offer a chance at both. I noticed these leaves against the blue fence as we headed down Lookout Court. [...]

Painted Ladies of Fort Beach Way

More from the Photowalk that took place on Saturday and was led by Rick Ashley and Dennis Curtin.  As we made our way back from Fort Sewall, I noticed the mailboxes that marked the entrance to Fort Beach Way.  I'm not sure why I haven't photographed these before but they immediately reminded me of the 'painted ladies' of San Francisco - a group of Victorian houses that are each painted a different color.  I set about getting the mailboxes in frame (not so easy as I only had the 100mm prime on) and opened up the lens again to play [...]

Backyard Picnic on Washington Street

Another image from Saturday's Worldwide Photowalk that took us from Abbot Hall down to Fort Sewall and back up Washington Street.  As I mentioned in Sunday's post about the experience, I had decided to shoot everything in these few hours with a single 100mm lens.  That was working well for isolating subjects and adding to the Experimental Friday theme.  The walk also forced me to slow down and look at areas I had previously passed without notice. This scene was one that I (and I'm sure many others) passed by previously without a second glance.  I'm not sure if it [...]
