Long Exposure – the Drain on Preston Beach

This Long Exposure Tuesday view comes from early September when a storm was churning off the coast and I headed out in search of big waves.  Those failed to appear but I hit Preston at high tide and decided to shoot some long exposure images instead.  This one at 25 seconds is relatively short but was enough to turn the incoming tide to a soft white cloud.  My favorite parts of the image are the rocks at the end of this drainage pipe and the ones to the left where the mist seems to encircle them.

Dawn over Little Harbor and Marblehead Light

On Saturday morning, I decided to wake up early in hopes that the predicted 35 degree temps would lead to some nice mist/fog coming off the ponds.  I drove by Redds and Black Joes but neither was 'misting' nor were there good colors to speak of.  Instead, I decided to park on Beacon Street and get some nice colors of the dawn reflecting off the water in Little Harbor.  There were a few boats in the near harbor that I took pictures of but preferred the longer view looking out towards the lighthouse.  The break in the choppy water served [...]

The Row Boat Independence

On Saturday, Rick Ashley and Dennis Curtin (two great local photographers) led a group of about fifty camera-wielding individuals through the streets of Marblehead as part of the Worldwide Photowalk.  The experience was a great one and I really enjoyed the conversations I had with both Denny and Rick as well as a number of other 'walkers'.  While the conditions were great for walking (crisp and sunny), they weren't perfect for photography.  I decided to use a prime lens for the entire 3 hour walk and was hoping to build up my 'experimental Friday' theme a bit. When we reached [...]

Experimental Friday – Yellow Trees on Beacon Street

I've shared some other 'experimental' shots on Fridays and thought I would bring this one out from hiding to see what you thought of it.  In mid November, I was driving around town looking for spots of color and happened upon this curve on Beacon Street.  The problem was that the only interesting part of the scene was the yellow color on this group of trees.  I therefore decided to darken the surrounding parts of the image and use a technique called the Orton Effect to add a deeper color and more painterly quality to the image.  So...does it work?

Falls Colors on Display at Memorial Park

These cool days (and my recent trip up to Vermont) have put me in the mood to chase foliage in town.  While I've only had a bit of success so far, I decided to dive into the archives and share some images from last year.  Yesterday, I showed the Gun House with a brilliant yellow tree in the background.  Today, we visit Memorial Park.  This maple tree was at peak color (and had already started to drop its leaves) when I visited on a late October day.  The light was harsh at 11:30am but the polarizer I used served to [...]

The Gun House of Marblehead

The Gun House of Marblehead was, as the sign proclaims, built in 1810 and was meant for storing artillery.  I happened to drive by it on Elm Street one day in early November of last year. The sun was still relatively high in the sky at almost 3pm and lit up the tree behind it in a beautiful yellow glow.  I decided to capture the old brick house and later learned the doors were slated for replacement.  I haven't been back yet to see if the new doors changed the building's appearance.

Long Exposure – Clouds Fly Over Browns Island

I remember when I took this photo in February that it had been prompted in large part by someone at the Reporter asking if I had any shots of Brown's (or Crowninshield) Island.  I had to confess I didn't have any that featured the whole island and so I made it a point to head down to Harding Lane and find a good vantage point. I had chosen a day with good clouds and a nice wind and decided to shoot this as a long exposure.  The fading light made exposures quite difficult and I managed a single good image [...]

Fall Regatta at Redds Pond

Yesterday, I drove around town looking for hints of Fall foliage.  I hit all of my favorite trees from last year and found that many were still in the early stages of turning.  As I drove up Pond Street, I happened upon a great regatta taking place at Redds Pond.  I decided this was too great a scene to pass up.  I set up for a view to include the backdrop of the house across the pond and Old Burial Hill.  As the boats came by under perfect conditions, I captured this pair in the foreground.  Make sure you come [...]

Shells on the Dry Dock

Back to Marblehead and the 'experimental Friday' mini-theme.  In late March and on a particularly nice day, I found myself wandering the docks that sat along Riverhead beach waiting for their time to be put back in the water.  As I looked above and below each one, I noticed some great colors and textures.  This image with shells surrounding the rusted ring and a mix of peeling red and blue paint was particularly interesting.  Seemed a good time to bring it out of the archives and showcase it on Experimental Friday.

Sunset from the Village Street Pier

Wednesdays in Marblehead resumes after the brief hiatus to shoot foliage in Vermont (if you missed the iPhone sneak peak, click HERE for the final shot - it's the first on the page).  I have been meaning to post this image for a while now but other shots kept cutting ahead of it.  This was taken at the end of August and I still remember how warm and humid it was on this night and how many mosquitoes kept buzzing around me as I shot this. I had noted the colors developing as the sun set and decided to drive [...]
