Twin Lightning at Preston Beach

As incredible as this summer has been, we have had very few impressive lightning storms. I decided to look back at images captured in August from years past that hadn't made it to the light of day and happened upon this two second exposure at Preston Beach in mid-August 2015. We had a very active storm pass by and I managed to capture several bolts of lightning by finding a composition, setting the aperture to f/22 and shutter speed to 2 seconds and then mashing the shutter release. I lucked out with twin lightning bolts in this shot under a [...]

At the Crocker Park Float – July 4, 2018 – 4:40pm

This is the last in my series of aerial images over Marblehead's favorite watering holes captured around high tide on Wednesday, July 4th. After capturing aerial photos of the core Marblehead beaches, I headed to Old Town to pick up one of my framed photographs from the Festival of Arts exhibit. Afterwards, I headed to Mariners Lane from where I could safely launch the drone and circle around the harbor to capture an image of the Crocker Park float at peak activity. If you look closely, you can just make out a girl caught in mid-air after jumping off the [...]

At Brown’s Island – July 4, 2018 – 2:40pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, clear skies, calm water and well timed high tide created the perfect opportunity. In this image of the beach at Brown's Island (apparently unnamed), I positioned the drone over the water of Little Harbor and sought to include the numerous boats anchored and/or tied up together in the calm waters. I had never seen this area so full [...]

At Gas House Beach – July 4, 2018 – 2:30pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, clear skies, calm water and well timed high tide created the perfect opportunity. In this image at Gas House Beach, I positioned the drone over the water of Little Harbor and watched the participants in the water to time this capture. I think it perfectly represents a hot summer day in Marblehead and the lure of the beach. [...]

At Devereux Beach – July 4, 2018 – 2:00pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. A few weeks earlier, my sister had noted that a video I shot over Preston Beach reminded her of the aerial work of another photographer she had followed. I checked out his images and saw the familiar split view of ocean and sand and decided to create a small series of aerial images of our many beaches.  The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, [...]

At Preston Beach – July 4, 2018 – 1:45pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, clear skies, calm water and well timed high tide created the perfect opportunity. In this image at Preston Beach, I positioned the drone just off shore and watched the waves and participants in the water to time this capture. I think it perfectly represents a hot summer day in Marblehead and the lure of the beach. Full series [...]

The Beach on Cove Lane

I've visited the beach on Cove Lane many times since first wandering down this public way on Marblehead Neck. Today's image comes from almost exactly three years ago when I made my way onto the Neck near sunset and found the beach deserted and with calm waters. The lone boat and hint of fog made for a very calm mood that night which hopefully carries forward in the final shot.

Marblehead Carnival by the Sea

The Marblehead Carnival is here! Starting tonight, bring the kids to Devereux Beach and enjoy the annual tradition of rides and games at the carnival by the sea. As it does every year, the carnival invariably brings with it rain. It looks like this year's forecast only calls for passing storms tonight and clear skies for the rest of the weekend. This year may be a lot busier too with our right whales visiting and attracting people to Devereux Beach. I have been photographing the carnival since moving to Marblehead ten years ago. Here are some of my favorites: https://wednesdaysinmhd.com/portfolio/marblehead-carnival/ [...]

Time to Play

I took most of January and February 'off' from the daily posts to try to regroup and start the new year with a new perspective to explore the town of Marblehead. With that hiatus finished, I thought I would share some favorite images taken during that time. Today's shot comes from a mid-January outing to Devereux Beach. I had gone out on this Saturday at 4pm to follow some clouds in the hopes that they would make for a nice sunset and ended up exploring new angles at Devereux afforded by the super zoom I had recently purchased.  With that [...]

Sunrise at the Sun Circle

I mentioned in Monday's post that I had spent more than a half hour at the beach from dawn to sunrise exploring compositions and enjoying the unusually warm late October morning.  Well after the golden color had left the morning sky and I had captured the sun rising over Ram Island, I finally made my way back up Atlantic Avenue. Before leaving, I decided to walk a few steps to the sun circle and see how the rising sun lined up with the spires found there.  As it happened, the positioning of the sun was nearly perfect and the morning [...]
