Gerry Island Bathed in Sea Smoke

Sunday, February 14th saw record low temperatures and the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead.  I spent much of the morning shooting from Fort Beach and Fort Sewall toward Marblehead Light.  When the sun rose high enough in the sky to make further compositions less interesting, I got back into the warm car and drove off to capture other familiar scenes bathed in sea smoke. Gerry Island was only a short way from my spot on Fort Beach so I drove past the lobster shanties and made my way there next.  I had checked the tides the night before [...]

A Rainbow over Ram’s Island

Last week, I shared an image of the incredible rain cloud that formed over Marblehead Neck on July 24, 2015.  This image of a rainbow over Ram's Island was taken 2 hours earlier as the combination of rain and breaking sunlight served to create the beautiful sight. I ended up capturing this particular rainbow at 5:15pm as we headed out to dinner not realizing that I would have a chance to capture another rainbow from Lafayette Street at 7:30pm as we returned home.  I ended up chasing that rainbow to Front Street and was treated to the rest of the [...]

Tinker’s Island in the Frame

In the Summer of 2012, we were invited by friends to their rental home on the Neck.  As I walked the grounds, I spotted this view of Tinker's Island framed by an archway.  I had left my tripod at home thinking I would only take photos of my kids so I braced myself against a wall and fired off two shots (one for Tinker's Island in the distance and the other for the archway).  I later blended the two together so that both were in focus in the final image.

Under the Clouds

One more warm image to finish off the week.  This one comes from August 5th and a trip out to Gerry Island when I noticed these great clouds forming overhead. I realized that I had never captured an image of Gerry Island on its own so I switched to a vertical orientation and used the clouds in the sky to break up the otherwise monotonous blue.

Gerry Island in the Fog

Continuing this week's black and white theme comes this image from May 5, 2012.  We had fog again to coincide with the carnival being in town and I had been shooting at Fort Sewall when I looked out and noted it was high tide.  I quickly made my way down Fort Beach Lane and to this location where I could shoot Gerry Island in the fog. I decided to take advantage of the thick fog and leave a lot of negative space above the island to add to the mood of isolation.  You can just make out a reflection of [...]

Tom Moore Rock Engulfed in Sea Smoke

Hope no one is tired of the beauty of sea smoke captured on a truly arctic morning earlier this month.  I had made it back to Castle Rock just before the sun rose and captured this image of Tom Moore Rock engulfed in sea smoke.  The smoke-formed clouds served to reflect the light of the rising sun with pastel pinks to bring color to the scene. As I worked on this image, I started to wonder about the history of Tom Moore Rock.  The best I have been able to figure out is that it started off as Nanepashemet rock and [...]

Children’s Island

On Saturday, the YMCA chartered the Hannah Glover for a circumnavigation of Children's Island and orientation for new campers.  We hopped on board as my daughter will be there for a session this Summer and enjoyed perfect conditions. Normally, we would have docked for a walk around the island but the dock was not yet operational for the season so, instead, we were treated to this view of the back of Children's Island.  I had never seen it from this vantage point and tried to capture the full length of the island.  The subtle clouds forming a diagonal in the [...]

Chandler Hovey Park and Children’s Island

An image from mid-February captured as I headed out in search of the full moon and ended up with a really nice winter sunset as a bonus.  I had been shooting wide angle shots encompassing the nearly empty harbor with the few working boats moored in its protective waters when I saw this composition.  I zoomed in so that Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Light were visible under the soft pink hues of sunset while including the whole of Children's Island just beyond. The setting sun added a brilliant warm glow to the scene and the snow served to break [...]

Brown’s Island Covered in Snow

Still in the archives but moving a bit closer to the present day with this image from January 3rd, 2014.  I had gone out at high tide after the Nor'easter / Blizzard swept through.  After capturing the impressive power of the waves crashing against the causeway and at Devereux Beach, I made my way out to Little Harbor and stopped along Beacon Street where I was awed by the level of the water at high tide. You can see the ledge and ladder on the left of the image and, if you have seen it during normal tides, might appreciate [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Peak Foliage on Brown’s Island

And so it ends...an absolutely perfect Fall day in Marblehead that began at Tedesco Country Club, continued at Ware Pond and the pond off Whittier Road, headed onto Beacon Street, now comes to a close with this view of peak foliage on Brown's Island.  By the time I reached an area from which to capture this image of peak foliage on Brown's Island, the clouds had started to build and were obstructing the sun all too often.  I had to wait for just the right moment at which some rays of light made their way through a helped illuminate the [...]
